I haven't been reading much about lately but I seem to remember the date April 19th floating around. Have any of you guys tested it? How's it looking compared to Edgy Eft? I think I will probably give it a go when it is release...
I knew it was in a few minutes! (http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntudesktop704)
I'm posting about an updated Linux distro? Does this mean I'm slowly converting? Weird...lol
Garfunkel
04-19-2007, 06:42 AM
EDIT: oh shit! it has been released! *downloads*
EDIT 2: nope, just a press release :/ I think they are doing what they did with edgy, upload it a few hours before release and name it so that nobody thinks it is the release, then just rename it and link to it when they are ready.
Correction my good man, a few hours! It releases on the 19th of April, you are correct (yes, you are slowly converting mwhahahahahahahaha). I expect it to be released at about mid-day london time (canonical/ubuntu is based in the isle of man), which would equal around 10PM my time. This is going off edgy's release time.
I am testing feisty, running the release candidate as we speak, i have been testing since the early alpha's (herds), but i could not test the beta because the installer would hang, they fixed it somewhat in the release candidate and i could continue but there is an app during installation to (migration assistant), that helps you copy docs and stuff from windows drives, it crashed on me, but didn't need it. The instalation has been streamlined and is uber easy, but IMHO the partitioner is going backwards, I LOVE gparted and found it much easier then the new system they have made, gparted has more features too. :/
So far however, the system is very stable and very good, the codecs for mp3's etc are not included (legal issues), but when playing a media file, they bring up a dialogue box telling you about them and allowing you to install them, works first time and was faultless.
it also recognised my 7800GTX and offered to download and install the drivers automatically, which it did faultlessly, it also comes with beryl included and can enable it by ticking a box, (it is only basic and stripped down a little to keep it stable, which IMO is reasonable).
One thing i don't like is that they have gone back on a menu change in the early herd alpha's, they had a control panel like system for making changes instead of the system ->administration/prefs panel, (which i find long and confusing and i have to go through the list 20 times before finding what i want). now it's back the way it was and i hate it. the control panel was cool.
one good thing, they brang back synaptic package manager - they removed it before and have brang it back.
the add/remove system is MUCH better then in edgy, it gives you ratings and is darn easy to use. its also very "smart", like if you search for an app that is proprietary it will show open source alternatives and stuff, very nice. you can improve beryl's functionality by searching for beryl and installing the beryl-manager and the other packages. the repositories are even larger then in edgy and it is fucking awesome, and up to date too!
IF you want, i can show you how to update to feisty without reinstalling.
Fillibuster

Yeah that would be awesome. I figure the upgrade should be pretty painless...as opposed to the whole Windows upgrade shit.

Always nice to see a new release of Ubuntu! This one looks easier than before! ;-]
Garfunkel
04-19-2007, 07:04 AM
it's simple to upgrade, just change the edgy entries in the sources.list to feisty then apt-get dist-upgrade and done.
here you go, you can do it via the GUI too:

I've been running Kubuntu feisty for a few weeks on my notebook. Excellent laptop support, and it runs faster thanks to the implementation of better linking software.

does suspend and resume and hibernate work good for you? they were talking about it a bit the other week on the linux action show podcast (awesome podcast btw, those guys are good enough for radio/tv)
here is the unofficial guide for feisty!

as long and useful as always

Is it Beryl or Compiz that comes with it? Either way, I tried installing Beryl using a guide from the beryl-project site and it's jacked up somehow. When I run beryl-manager from the Terminal I get a shitload of *Critical*s and I think it has something to do with xgl, though I'm not positive. Also Feisty didn't say anything about my 7800GTX except that I was using a restricted driver....
Garfunkel

it comes with beryl, are you using it now?
To enable beryl, you just go to system -> desktop effects and enable it, done.

It's been out for a few hours on their servers, just not announced, i waited till i could confirm it was official by comparing the md5sums on the files with the quoted one. Here it is!:
...i can't get onto their site, just go to ubuntu.com then go to download.
(their servers are being HAMMERED!)
here is the bigpond download link, should get fast speeds here, not shore if it works for the smart people who didn't get telstra :)

i have 6.10. can i just update it with the updater or do i have download the iso?
Fillibuster
04-19-2007, 04:45 PM
I think it should let you update it through the updater, it'll say there's a new version available I believe, though I'm not sure because I did it last night before it was "officially" released
Silent Warrior
04-19-2007, 06:49 PM
ok its updating now. im also downloading the iso aswell for a friend.

it comes with beryl, are you using it now?
To enable beryl, you just go to system -> desktop effects and enable it, done.
I was just talking about the other Beryl features, I tried to do the Beryl install so that I could use all the features of Beryl not just cube and wobble...

does suspend and resume and hibernate work good for you?
Yes, they work as they should.
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 03:03 AM
I was just talking about the other Beryl features, I tried to do the Beryl install so that I could use all the features of Beryl not just cube and wobble...
you don't need to do it, i found that you can enable the advanced features by going to add/remove and searching for beryl, download the config tools.
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 03:11 AM
Hmm, I'll try it out. When I went to add/remove last night everything had a checkmark next to it, but there weren't nearly as many options as with Edgy...I'm thinking that something is amiss here. Beryl Manager and Beryl Settings both had a check mark next to it, I'm going to restart and get on Feisty and check all of this out...
EDIT: I'm not even going to acknowledge to you what I did wrong...I'm a n00bfucktard lol
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 03:20 AM
you may need to undo the changes you made to install beryl, editing xorg etc. you should just be able to follow the tutorial backwards.
right now i can not update any packages, their feisty repo's are being raped, anyone else having this problem?
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 03:54 AM
i don't know, I'm installing a bunch of packages right now, but not updating, and I'm only getting like 48 kb/s. And I'm going to uninstall Beryl and everything and start all over. Someone on ubuntuforums was having problems I think, and took everything out and started over; kind of like what I had to do on Edgy.
EDIT: Actually now that I think about it, the tutorial never told me to update anything in xorg which is probably why it isn't working in the first place. Do you think that if I follow an Edgy guide and replace edgy with feisty where necessary I can update the xorg accordingly and it might be fine?
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 04:22 AM
no, you may have followed the GUI update tutorial, not the text based one.
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 05:28 AM
I followed a better guide that updated my xorg and whatnot, then i restarted X and when I typed beryl-manager in the terminal I got the following...
alex@Fillibuster:~$ beryl-manager
alex@Fillibuster:~$ Window manager warning: Workarounds for broken applications disabled. Some applications may not behave properly.
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded"

Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 05:34 AM
you don't need to run beryl-manager, just go to system ->prefereces and go to desktop effects.
if you want to enable the advanced features all you have to do is go to add/remove applications and go to the top right of the screen, change the drop down box to all applications, do a search for beryl and install the config tool. done.
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 05:38 AM
Alright I did that, windows wobble, but the advance stuff doesn't work. I got rid of all the shit I did with the guide, and uninstalled beryl and everything and now am just using the default effects like you said and i reinstalled beryl settings from the add/remove and the advanced stuff still doesn't work. If it's going to be a bitch it isn't a big deal, I'm just wondering why even though in Desktop Effects I have the cube box checked and I can't get the cube to work.
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 06:20 AM
go to applications -> system tools. the settings are in there
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 06:33 AM
I know and all the effects are enabled by default, but when I quit the settings nothing works except wobble.
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 06:44 AM
hmm. my only guess is that the other effects have no keys binded to them, have a look at the cube spinning etc in the config panel and see if you can add key bindings.
i've had problems with feisty with my tv card (same with the release candidate, but i can't get it working! (i could in the release candidate)) so i'm going to have to reinstall and hope i can get it going.

04-20-2007, 08:10 AM
Good lord I'm having so many issues with the PowerPC version.
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 08:19 AM
Well something else I've noticed is that right off the bat I only have one desktop available to me in the taskbar. And in Beryl Settings I can't uncheck anything, only highlight the checkbox or unhighlight it while keeping it checked. And in my system monitor I don't have anything beryl related running, only Compiz...
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 08:35 AM
i don't know man, ubuntu forums may know more. (i've had my own problems with bloody kaffeine being a bitch)
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 08:36 AM
Yeah I'm checking the forums out too. Alot of people had luck using this "1-2-3" method, but it makes me nervous. But it's not like anything has been working. It couldn't have anything to do with a theme I'm running could it?
EDIT: Eh, that didn't work either. I guess I'll just remove all that shit and try again later. Just kind of frustrating...
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 09:24 AM
your telling me, my tv card was working in edgy fine but BAM doesn't work anymore :( I could get it going in the release candidate but now i can't even do that in the final release. argh, man that sucks.
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 09:28 AM
Yeah seriously its so weird how stuff just stops working. Because last night when I upgraded the cube worked flawlessly. It had the ubuntu caps so I knew it was the feisty default and everything, and then it just died and I can't revive any of it to save my life. lol. I'm guessing it's like this for the first couple days or weeks of a new release?
Garfunkel
04-20-2007, 10:30 AM
usually yeah, it takes them a week or so to work out some of the bugs. I just hate it that my tv tuner doesn't work :( I'm fucking pissed about that.
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 09:24 PM
Well everyone over at ubuntuforums is mentioning that it is actually Compiz, and to fix my cube I went to gconf-editor>Apps>Compiz>General>Screen0>and changed the hsize to 4. I'm going to install the Compiz Settings Manager and hopefully that gets me some advanced options!

04-20-2007, 09:25 PM
linux.....i have a problem. as i was upgrading to the new version lastnight. it all of a sudden stopped and the update manager dissapered and that was it. i was like.....ok.....nothing happend. it like froze or something. so then i reset and now linux wont load. i think it brokeded...
Fillibuster
04-20-2007, 09:36 PM
Ok so gnome-compiz-manager installed from the synaptic package manager makes everything work perfectly!
Sorry Silent, since I'm a noob too I don't have any ideas for you. Hopefully Garf can help, or maybe someone over at ubuntuforums.org has an idea for you...:(
Teh Roxor!
04-20-2007, 09:38 PM
Haha, I have no problems, but that may be because when I installed I reformatted my drive.
Garfunkel
04-21-2007, 02:43 AM
wait, let me reboot, i think i have stuffed up...
wait no, still works fine...strange...
anyway, i'm not shore if it comes with beryl or compiz, they are both merging remember, right now my (supposed) beryl is working fine for me, with beryl manager and the settings window. man this is confusing...
Silent - i think it was just a crash, a bad crash at that... i think your only option is to reinstall it man.
Fillibuster
04-21-2007, 03:17 AM
Yeah I'm confused, I'm checking a thread called "Beryl or Compiz being used?" I just want to know the damn answer lol.
Also, to get some of the extra effects for compiz I went into Synaptic PM and tried to install gnome-compiz-manager-extra, but it's telling me that there is no version or something...
gnome-compiz-manager-extra:
Package gnome-compiz-manager-extra has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list
I know your not using compiz, but do you know of any repositories that would have this? Or is it a different issue...I made a thread over on the ubuntuforums but no one has replied yet :(
Garfunkel
04-21-2007, 03:22 AM
FUCK! i changed the res and and all that and restarted x and my worst fears were answered, now my panels are not showing right. DAMMITTTT!!!!
nvm, fixed it by doing http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=1631
ok, it seems i am good now.
now to try and help you. - i don't know about any repos for compiz but i will bump the thread for you ;)
I found out that both compiz and beryl are in feisty, that is why they both work, but compiz is default (compiz is more conservative then beryl)
Fillibuster
04-21-2007, 03:53 AM
Man you sound like you've got a lot more shit going on than I do. I don't have any ideas for you of course, but I remember seeing this thread about resolutions; maybe it could help? (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=413918&highlight=resolution)? Although you've probably already checked these forums...
EDIT: NVM lol, I thought it was you...

04-21-2007, 04:04 AM
n00b double post...
So I wonder why even when I installed the beryl settings and all that shit, why it wouldn't work for me? Weird as hell. Compiz is fine enough, and if I can get the extras going it will be even better, although I would prefer Beryl I just can't figure out why the H it won't work
Silent Warrior
04-21-2007, 04:05 AM

Hey Garf, I just decided to download the plugins directly, and I'm not sure how to handle these tar.gz's that I have now...
Garfunkel
04-21-2007, 04:25 AM
i don't know i've never done it, i am assuming you unzip them, open the terminal, cd into the folder and then run
./configure
make
sudo make install
but there may also be an import/add feature in compiz that does it for you.
anyway, i'm all up and running. :hugegrun:

I don't know anything about that error, my god this is one heck of a day. so many people are having problems getting beryl/compiz to run. i think what you should do is just hunt out threads from people having the same issues and copy them.
You know what? they said they were not going to install the 3d stuff by default but they got complaints so they went back on it, now that i think of it, mark shuttleworth was right by not including it, it has created so many problems and it's because the 6 month release cycle doesn't allow for enough testing.

yes and no, i heard lots of issues with it too, only really tried it once yesterday and worked fine, except for google earth, it just downloaded it and didn't install it...had to do it by hand.

how do i install a beryl theme? i want this theme.
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Kore?content=54701
you will need to install a package called emerald, which is a theming extension to beryl, i don't have instructions for you yet, but leave it with me, i need it too.
EDIT: Figured it out! (i can't believe i forgot about synaptic...)
go to synaptic or a terminal and install emerald and emerald-themes.
if you have beryl-manager running (the diamond in the tray bar) right click it and exit it, then start it again, right click it and go to select windows decorator -> standard beryl decorator (emerald). now go to system -> prefs -> emerald and select a theme!
To install a new theme download it (in that link you gave me it is the first download link), extract the file, open up emerald, hit import, import the theme (i think you can only do it one by one) and done! now select it from the list!
Fillibuster

go to system -> admin -> login window and go to local tab, there you go! if you want to add a new GDM theme, go to gnome-look.org and go to GDM themes. download one you want.
to import the theme you can either click on "add" and select it, or you can drag the downloaded file into the selection window, done!
and i've pm'd you about winff

you should just be able to type "winff" and it should either open up or shoot an error out. also try "winff -v" for verbose mode and "sudo winff" just in case.
I'll try and install it too and see what happens.
EDIT: ok i installed it and got the same thing. I ran it through the terminal and got:
winff: error while loading shared libraries: libgdk_pixbuf.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I'll see what i can do.

Hi Michael,
Unfortunately the wiki seems to be down at the moment so I can't read the steps you followed.
To install libgdk-pixbuf-dev you need to have the universe repository enabled.
To do this follow the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/extra-repositories.html
Then open Synaptic Package Manager in System -> Administration and click Reload.
Do a search for libgdk-pixbuf-dev and click the check box to mark it for installation.
You will also need to do this for libgtk1.2-dev. Click Apply and after a few moments you should be ready to go.
Good Luck SmileHere's the quote that helped me. I installed those two files from synaptic and Winff responded. But remember how only certain conversions worked, well it seems hardly any of em work now. Or at least not the ones I want. (Mpeg-2, Mp4 etc...) Almost there man....almost there...

Dammit where are you Garf? Anyway..when u get a chance, try to sudo ffmpeg and see what happens.
Winff works but it can't convert anything, so the problem has to be in ffmpeg...Coded-dude told me I'm probably gonna have to fix it manually with the terminal, but well that's just scary.
this is what I get when I sudo ffmpeg btw...

OK, now you figured out the pixbuff thing, when i typed in winff i started researching what came up and installed pixbuff and it worked. now i think you are at the same stage as me, when you try to convert something with winff do you get a little window with terminal text on it? and it doesn't do anything else? then you are at the same stage as me. To convert it copy all that text and paste it in a terminal and press enter. I don't know why it doesn't do it itself but there is how you convert with it.
Lol yeah Garf where the hell are you, I haven't touched my Linux side yet cuz I want it to work!

Me and Coded-dude have been going back and forth for a few days now with it. I'm pretty sure if he was here on my PC he could get it running, but it's kinda hard emulating Linux commands over the net for me (Still noob) But basically he said that It looks like I have ffmpeg installed OK, but the file arrangement is a little jacked up and ffmpeg is not recognizing files I have installed on my PC.
smilez@smilez-desktop:~$ sudo ffmpeg

OK...this has to be the problem right here right? These files are installed, but ffmpeg can't locate them because there in the wrong section/file of my PC. So to make sure ffmpeg knows it's there, I have to do what you said up top correct?
OK...whew....step by step here, what's the first thing I enter into the terminal?

Coded-dude had me do a search and that file is located on my PC, but ffmpeg can't find it because it's in the wrong folder I guess. He was trying to configure it so that ffmpeg locates files there, but as you can see, it got kinda confusing...

coded-dude knows more about it then i do so he's your best bet.
maybe he can log onto your system via remote desktop and do it first hand (if you trust him that is ;))
EDIT: ok time to answer some questions for you two:
Omni - do you have mplayer installed? AFAIK it plays the .mov extension and comes with the codec to do so. (sudo aptitude install mplayer)
Fillibuster - Lets assume you ubuntu box is 100% stock:
go to system -> preferences -> desktop effects, you should be prompted that you need the drivers for your video card, it should install them automatically, let it do so then enable the desktop effects.
you should now have a (basic) 3d environment, for me the windows wobbled but i can't remember if i had the cube and all...press ctrl+alt+backspace and log in, just to make sure your xorg and xserver are working good.
now go to add/remove applications (NOT SYNAPTIC), and go to the top right hand corner of the screen where it says "show", select "all available applications". now, do a search for "beryl", three things should show up, install the beryl-manager and settings manager (should be the first two).
now beryl-manager and the settings manager should be in applications -> system tools. Open up the beryl-manager and you SHOULD have the spinny cube and all the better effects. (to use the cube you hold the ctrl and alt buttons and hold the left mouse button while moving it). You should have the beryl logo at the top and bottom of the cube, if so then you are obviously running beryl.
obviously, you can change the settings with the settings mananger.
Now, in case you are having the same problem as i was having where the title bar with the maximize/close etc doesn't show, and you have white windows when opening up the terminal and stuff, you can fix it by exiting beryl-manager and disabling the effects, and typing into a terminal:
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals
and then either press ctrl+alt+backspace again or restart the computer to refresh the xorg.
that worked perfectly for me and my bars and stuff appeared as normal. if not, tell me! :)
when you have finished or stuff up along the way just respond! i am back online now and hopefully my internet tubes won't go bye-bye anymore *doesn't hold breath*
AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER, that's what i did.

SUXORS!
Ok, well your linux distro may handle library linking differently
(since there was nothing in that file except the pointer to the directory)
Please do an 'ls -al /etc/ld.so.conf.d' and post your results.
As for the commands, yes you entered them correctly.
when you hit the Esc key it takes you out of edit mode;
when you hit : it puts you into a command line mode;
wq! Just are commands that stand for Write, Quite, Force Write
If the file is read only and owned by you it won't let you write to the file unless you use the bang(!)
Enter just executes the :wq! command. :pinky:

man it took me forever to figure out, what it is is that the bar is opposite, so the more it is to the left the slower it is. The thing is the balance is a bit off because the first 5 percent of the bar is slow and above that is fast and you can't tell much difference from say .5 and 1. I don't know why they did that. I have mine set to 0.0050 and it's nice and graceful :)

Compiz is less customizable (well, less easily customized anyway), compiz is basically the original while beryl is a fork and is less conservative. by pulling up the settings manager you can change lots of things like:
3d windows (like your windows are slabs of concrete that can lift off the cube)
animations (like what happens when you minimize a window and stuff)
blur effects and other things as well.

# ps -ef | grep ssh
(should return something like this)
root 3593 1 0 2006 ? 00:00:05 /usr/sbin/sshd -o pidFile=/var/run/sshd.init.pid
(and possible some other stuff to, that not important)
How do you connect to the internet?
Cable, DSL, Fibre, Dial-Up, etc.
You should be able to call you local ISP(internet service provider - AT&T, COX, Verizon, etc.)
and they will help you set up Port Forwarding on your Gateway(switch/router).
Forward any traffic that hits your WAN IP address to your Linux box.
or just enter the IP address of your gateway into your web browser and configure it yourself.
