sadly though, from feisty onwards they are dropping support for the PPC/Cell. However, Debian will ALWAYS support this, that is what debian does... ;)

Yes, there are a few versions of ubuntu. Firsty, there is ubuntu, then kubuntu, then xubuntu. The ONLY difference between these versions is the graphical user interface (GUI). They ALL come with a GUI and are all easy to use, they just look different.

Ubuntu uses a system called "GNOME", kubuntu uses "KDE" and xubuntu uses "XFCE" they are all good but it is user preference.

May i suggest that before installing ubuntu on the ps3 that you try an ubuntu livecd on your computer, it will not touch your hard drive and you will not lose any of your windows data. If you wanted too i could help you install ubuntu alongside windows, allowing you to keep both operating systems and you can choose which one you want to run at start-up.
