man, sorry to hear you have joined the ranks of those unfortunate enough to have bought a launch 360.

I recommend starting with resistance. It really is a damn fine game. Motorstorm is good if you like racers. Fighters, well VF5 of course. Downloadables, blast factor and fl0w are both must haves. If you don't have oblivion already, get it.

Resistance, Motorstorm, NGS, VF5.....

I'm empty...

There's a tiny bit of a wait until games like Lair and stuff lol. Come on MGS4 and FF XIII! Heavenly Sword will also be one to look into.

Well honestly, most of the good games are far off, and they are the real meat of what's going to make the PS3. Lair, HS, FF XIII, MGS4, Uncharted, R&C, KZ, GTA IV, many others.....

2007 to mid 08 is huge for the PS3.

Sorry to hear about your 360, I believe if you contact support they will replace your console.

As far as games its looking somewhat dry for a few months so I would rent until we see the fall roll around. Or you could pick up Oblivion, that game could keep you busy for quite some time.

Sucks big time. PS3 is very very reliable. If your PS3 breaks, maybe God just doesn't want you to play video games. :)

Good advice in this thread, save your cash for the big games starting in August, also maybe pick up a few classic PS2 titles you missed, wireless and hdmi breathes a little new life into them.

But you can't go wrong with Resistance, Oblivion(if you like Western RPGs) and Motorstorm.

Chances are you had the same problem as most people did, which was the clamp causing the motherboard to flex and force the CPU and/or GPU out of the socket. Microsoft's fix for this (and you can see it if you look at the board photos of the Elite (http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/inside_the_xbox_360_elite.htm)) is to glue the chips down with beads of epoxy... So now when the board flexes, so do the chips.

They really are the antithesis of Sony...

This is the best advice.

Sony being the company who's smart on hardware, not so much on software.
Microsoft being the exact opposite -- smart on software, not so much on hardware.

If Sony made the same error, their solution would actually involve a new clamp design, not... glue. Not that Sony would make simple hardware errors like that (more esoteric errors are a different matter). On the other hand, simple problems like generating bad dependency graphs in your build process is something Microsoft is generally pretty good about fixing and Sony is not (often times suggesting that you "try" some modification and see if it works).

wouldn't making the chips flex reduce the lifespan of the console? It really seems like a terrible answer to a terrible problem. I really feel bad for 360 owners now, considering there is so much warping of components going on inside their systems.

Good call cpi, Sony really doesn't get nearly enough credit that they deserve for their hardware design. They got some credit or when the PS3 first came out, but that was about it. They've made some big faults obviously with the laptop batteries, and the PS2 may have faltered out of the gate more than most consumer products, but Sony is skilled. Seriously skilled.

I'm strictly talking about within our gaming universe though. In the 'real world' (lol) Sony is still known for high quality, top tier, expensive TVs lol.

I think they're just figuring that the package is flexible (it appears to be fiberglass), but the die and the slug surrounding are packed in hardened rigid metal, so only the package flexes and the slug just moves a little without bending. Maybe it'll work out, but I agree that it's a lousy way to try and fix the problem. It's using a band-aid to set a fractured bone.
