At present 1.7 million laser diodes are manufactured with Sony Shiroishi Semiconductor. Production could increase Sony according to own data to monthly 5 millions, if it requires the market situation.

Takashi Uehara, a speaker for Sony, stresses that the company has enough capacity blue laser diodes for the PlayStation3 to make Blue ray Player available and Blu-ray recorders.

The more they can produce, the cheaper they will become.

Need to lower price.

Need more software.

Make it happen, Sony.

I personally think that's enough to be made per month.

I mean if you can make 1 million PS3s a month....

The highest the PS2 sold in a month (most often) was like 1 million units or around that. As long as it's going towards making a solid number of PS3s, sounds good.

This coupled with more BD success (as indicated by the moved thread) is good. The more, and faster, BD wins, the more, and faster, the PS3 will see success.

One Blue Diode and One Red Diode, so the 1.7 million capacity is enough to make 1.7 million drives.

Of which must be spread among PS3 and all Sony stand along players plus those that they sell out for other brand BD and HD DVD players.

The name given in the OP is Sony Shiroishi Semiconductor - so this is a Sony plant? If so, I would think that would mean they would satisfy PS3 and Sony player needs before other brand BD and HD-DVD players.

True they would but I doubt 5 million Sony players (PS3 and stand alone players) will be sold per month meaning they'll have an excess that can be sold.

It's not unusual for a manufacture to sell certain components that could be used in competing products.

Ok, I understand - at first I thought you meant they had to be spread equally and that if there weren't enough to go around that PS3 might still not get enough. But I agree that the capacity they are talking about will be way more than PS3 needs and would then be available to other products.

I'm really looking forward to relatively cheap Blu-ray storage solutions. I have so many things to back up (and I'm not talking about illegal stuff) that I can't be bothered with DVD+Rs anymore unless it's critical.

Viper

Doubtful or at least not on any significant level. Keep in mind that Sony is expecting to lose $1.7 billion during the fiscal year from the games division and they may keep the price high for a few months even if they can drop the price just to help offset some of that loss. A cut near the holiday is more likely.

Which is perfect if you ask me. They were talking about the npd's on 1up yours this week and I was surprised at how good of a discussion it actually became. There was no bashing of anything and their take was that within the near future wii will surpass the 360, with ps3 being even or close. Down the line though they all think the wii is going to take a backseat to both the 360/ps3.

well, what do you know, it has two laser lenses. I thought the Blu-ray one can read conventional disks. guess that is something they'll do later on. this is the first time I've seen that pic.

so the big futuristic looking bulged sphere is the Blu-ray lens?
also, if the second is an ordinary DVD lens, then why count it?

ZOMG, that 1 or 2 lens issue is dragging so long. So let's put an end to this.

One Objective Lens, One Laser Unit

In this BD drive, different system objective lenses are packed into one. The PS3 also uses a semiconductor laser dubbed "three-wavelength laser," a package, which can radiate near-infrared laser for CD, red laser for DVD and blue violet laser for BD.

The big circle is the spindle the disc spins on. The laser is in the assembly that's on a track. PEACE.

From amuront's link.

Meanwhile, given the same distance of 0.6 mm between the signal layer and disc surface, it is not difficult to integrate HD DVD, BD's rival format, and CD/DVD optical systems. SCE may intend to be comparable in this respect as well.

Well, that's a bit of wild speculation. Potentially compatible with HD DVD? If true, then that would be a great failsafe for the format war.

that is what I am saying; I see only one lens. where are the two blu diodes that should be there? someone said PS3 uses not one but two diodes. where are they? are they visible?
that is my question. others just keep telling me 'it's there' or 'look closer'. well, can you be bothered to describes where it is exactly or make an arrow?
