To: Sony
We, Playstation 3 users, ask Sony to allow the use of the RSX trough Other OS.

Right now because of the PS3 firmware limitation we can't...
- Easily watch movies in various formats
- Correctly use 2D applications
- Friendly run lite 3D applications

Useless when it comes to fight against piracy, this limitation is a trouble for honest users but not for pirates:
it makes operating systems as Linux not interesting enough and this fabulous project of Other Os on PS3 seems to drown. A huge number of disappointed comments in many forums are proving this.

Dear Sony, you made us dream, please now don't leave us alone with lost hopes.

Sincerely,

http://www.petitiononline.com/RSX/petition.html

everyone pleas HELP!

Of course they won't open it. They may very well give a binary, closed-source driver, like ATI and nVidia do, but they won't open it. Merely enable it.

even this will be good, linux need to support RSX in any way, if they want
us to use it as a normal computer.

Sony knows that we want it, Sony responds to it for a while a go and said they dont make it ATM because of security stuff.
If Sony is ready to do it they will do it.

Hehe i dont do that man.
BUT we dont can make a petition for everything.
Things like that just have a reason and when there is something that makes this just impossible to do at this moment, a petition wont change that. ;)

Sony has no reason to dont do it when they could but they just cant.

what will make theme loose mony?
if sony make it a good computer,
they will get more buyers and make more mony,
right?

and do you think the homebrew community have the resources to make
a large game production, even if it happen it will be 3 or 4 games at the most!

Other OS is not only for Linux. pirates can easely construct an application to open everything up. That's why they closed it.

I might sign it later or something, I'm too lazy for these type of things lol. I'm under the impression Sony couldn't care less about what we want on this issue.

Come on haxxors!!!! Bring in the hackers! I'm rooting for you!!!

It's a domino effect. Once one of the them fell down, you can't stop it.

If they enabled the RSX then they'd find a way to run games on it. What the probably don't want is hackers finding a way to boot copied games from Linux.
Yellowdog seemed slow anyway. If enabling the RSX will allow me to render 3D animations very quickly then I'm all for it but I really don't see why you couldnt optimise things to run in software via the cell. The cell is no graphics card but the SPE's are supposed to be close in function to vector processors

What they need to do is release a driver that only enables limited hardware support from RSX, like for instance not allowing it to run a game as graphically intensive as a ps3 title. However, I don't think hackers would be able to anyway since those games use every bit of available RAM the system has, and running an "other OS" in the background would eat into that. What they could do is limit the VRAM to 128MB, thus eliminating the ability to run a ps3 game at all. I don't know how this could be achieved from a technical standpoint, but it at least sounds like it would work at the surface.

Um, RSX will not be given support as it opens up the PS3 to attacks. So it doesn't matter how many people sign the petition, Sony isn't going to open its console to being hacked purposely.

Has petition online ever actually worked? I just can't see most major corporations giving a shit about some small site that collects unmoderated unscientific polls.

Not meaning to rain on your parade, just a thought.

This doesnt make sense.

PCs nowadays have full support for all Linux distris, yet no big commercial game is marketed for Linux (some however do have Linux binaries, like NWN). Opening up the RSX will not magically get developers or rather publishers on this side, as most (the usual gamer) wont even bother to install Linux onto his PS3.

It would be very good, if Sony released a good (NVidia like) drivers for the PS3s RSX (and Wifi would also be nice). Theres lots of possibilities for Sony to market the PS3 as a computer for work or internet surfing (preinstalled and even my mum could use it for ebay), way beyond 7 years of solely gaming (maybe a little bit more ram was nice).

That's just silly. Opening/enabling a graphics card will not magically open it to attacks, and having a closed graphics card isn't going to magically stop attacks from happening.
