Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto has said we'll be revelling in the world of Final Fantasy XIII for a decade.

He was speaking to Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream when he used the next-generation offering as a comparison between an evolving storyline and a completely new one, upon which multiple products could be based - much like iterations in the Star Wars series or Harry Potter saga.

"Different from something like VII, which we expanded upon afterwards, with Fabula Nova Crystallis FFXIII we thought about an expansive world setting from the start," Hashimoto said in the interview partially translated by IGN. "Under the idea of wanting everyone to be sucked into the world for 10 years, we're preparing a number of categories."

Until now each new Final Fantasy game had been an individual story in a larger series. And although they shared familiar aspects, pretty much all came to their own conclusion - with the exception of Final Fantasy X, which spawned Final Fantasy X-2.

"If forced to give the essential common points for [Final Fantasy], there are Chocobo-like living creatures, there are crystals, there's travel via air ships, there are items such as potions... and the genre is RPG," Hashimoto added.

"While there are some exceptions, in general there aren't 'sequels', so the games that are part of the 'numbered series' will always come to a self-contained conclusion; VII's sequel is not VIII, and VIII's sequel is not IX."

The Fabula Nova Crystallis, or "the new tale of the crystal" series is made up of two games for PlayStation 3. Final Fantasy XIII will be the first to launch followed by sequel and alternate tale Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

A demo for FFXIII is expected sometime this year. A release date for the game is yet to be confirmed.

I often agree with you but how is this milking?

It's the first time SE tries to create a unified universe and it's only for a branch of their franchise not forgetting that the different games got different game-play basics.
If any they are trying something completely new.

Calling this milking is basically like saying Paper Mario, Mario Cart, Mario Tennis, Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 3 basically got the same game-play and feel.

Back when FF8 was first announced, I posted on GAF that they should stop using numbers and start going with subtitles to denote new games. Well, it took them a while, but they finally got around to it. Now it seems like they want to take that to a whole new extreme. God forbid they invest heavily in knew (and good) IPs. PEACE.

This is going to make it very hard for lazy people like me to keep up.

I buy FF9 and then not buy a FF until FF:XII for example knowing they are not tied in any way.

But now for 10 years every game is going to be in the FF: XIII universe so I can't take a two year break and just randomly go back into FF :(

"Just get used to it" ;)

Personally, I like this, as long as they will still make XIV someday, I don't want to be stuck in one universe for too long. Besides, 10 years is like, 12% of my remaining lifespan, so it's a little intimidating.

Yeah, exactly.
This just seems really strange to me. What makes them figure that people are going to want FFXIII for the next 10 years? Very interesting to see how this turns out. If you think about, weaving that world and history over 10 years of game-making will really be something amazing. Seiken Densetsu sort of has done that, but not in a way that seems to be cohesive as what it sounds like they are planning with FFXIII.

My thoughts exactly, Lucent.

I just hope that they'll do the same thing they did with the Compilation of FF VII. They released the compilation games, but at the same time, they were still working on FF XII.

i would not mind if they based 10 years of FF off of Spira. The best looking FF enviorment ever. i would love to see a PS3 Spira.
