PLAYSTATION EYE CAMERA - SUMMER LAUNCH
Sony has announced that their next gen Eye camera will be launched in Europe this summer. Picking up where the EyeToy left off, the new device is custom built for the PS3 and works as an accessory for voice, video chat and online gaming. It’s a pretty slick looking device as well. PlayStation say it’s designed specifically to work with the next generation of social gaming titles and new services being developed for PS3. Key features of the PlayStation Eye include:
• A sophisticated microphone with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on the spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition and transfer
• The ability to capture videos and audio clips directly to your PS3’s hard disk drive
• Engineered to perform well even in low-light conditions
• A range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse
• Faster frame rate for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness
• Two position zoom lens for close-up and full body options
• A range of eye-catching visual effects to apply to photos and videos
• Bundled with EyeCreate™ editing software, which allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips
Here’s some more specific info on the PlayStation Eye
EyeCreate software
EyeCreate editing software, bundled free with PLAYSTATION Eye allows you to save photos, video and audio clips to your PS3 hard disk drive and apply eye-catching visual effects to your images. Different capture modes like time-lapse and slow motion open up a world of possibilities to be explored further in EyeCreate’s editing suite, where you can turn your media into professional looking movies.
New microphone functions
An all-new four microphone array, incorporating multidirectional voice location tracking, enhanced echo cancelling and background noise suppression allows for clear audio chat in even the most noisy of environments, without the need to hold or wear a headset.
Next-generation camera features
A frame rate of up to 120 frames per second allows for super-smooth video and sophisticated low-light operation means that the room doesn’t have to be brightly lit for the camera to deliver crisp, perfectly exposed video. The adjustable zoom lens features a 56º field of view to capture head and shoulders action for close-in audio-visual chat, and a 75º field of view to capture the whole body for a fully physical gaming experience.
Technical Specifications:
• 4 channel audio input:16 bits/channel, 48kHz, SNR 90db
• 56º to 75º Field of View zoom lens
• 2.1 F-stop, <1% distortion, fixed focus (25cm to 8 at 75º FOV)
• 640 x 480 at 60 frames/second
• 320 x 240 at 120 frames/second
• USB2 high-speed data transfer
• Uncompressed video or optional JPEG compression

Great find! I'm seriously considering buying one, even I am no fan of the original eyetoy. Those specs are very impressive, so I don't think it'll be cheap.

With a camera like this, they will!
Seriously, this even rivals Logitechs top models, and they're really good, not to mention expensive. Since this will be bundled with EoJ, I expect a retail price of 60-70 USD.

No, it requires a small electrical motor to let the camera follow when you're moving, so they'd have to put it there from the start.

well if its angle is controlled through software then it already got it and with a 75º field of view it should be better than QuickCam Pro.
What I find really cool is that it seem like EyeToy games will be able to use any webcam living up to these standards where software on CELL does the actual image recognition processing (been hoping for this). :D

PLAYSTATION EYE - Q+A (http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=394)
Here’s some answers from Sony to a selection of PlayStation Eye questions.
Does the new Eye differ from EyeToy much?
“It’s superior to EyeToy in nearly every way: four times the resolution, two times the frame-rate, two times the sensitivity and no compression artefacts. It has two fundamental new features: a two-setting optical zoom lens, and a built-in microphone array.”
Is the EyeToy even compatible with the PS3?
“Yes, but the picture quality is inferior to the PS Eye.”
Is the PlayStation Eye backward compatible with the PS2?
“No.”
What software comes with the camera? And what software and games will be available at launch or in the near future?
“It’s supplied with EyeCreate, which allows people to save photos, video and audio clips, as well as editing them and create truly individual movies using the different capture modes such as time-lapse and slow motion. Future software and games planned for use with the Eye will include Eye of Judgement, Ember, Skyblue and Aqua Vita, but the list will grow considerably over time.”
It sounds nice but what does ‘ability to reduce background noise and focus on the spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition and transfer’ mean to a consumer?
“PS Eye’s high-quality mic array allows PS3 to analyse the audio input and separate human voices from other sounds, such as fans, traffic sounds, laundry, vacuums, etc. This makes your voice clearer on the other side during chat, and makes it easier for games with speech recognition to understand what you are saying.”
Can the PS Eye work in low light?
“It’s much more sensitive than EyeToy, to the extent that although it still works best in a well-lit room, it can produce reasonable quality video by simply using the illumination given off by the television set.”
If you compare the PlayStation Eye with a normal digital camera, how does the zoom lens compare?
“The lens on PlayStation Eye has two optical settings: normal, which is a 56 degree field of view and wide, which is a 72 degree field of view. This is similar to some point-and-shoot cameras. The normal setting is similar to EyeToy’s configuration and the addition of the wide setting is intended for full-body tracking. The user can switch the setting according to match his desired experience.”
And how does the frame rate compare to other web cams?
“It has a very fast frame rate. Most webcams max out at 30 frames/sec, but the Eye typically runs at 60 frames/sec, which makes it twice as responsive and can also run at 120 frames/sec mode for extreme high-speed tracking applications. This makes it a very unique camera.”
What format(s) do the video and audio save in?
“All video and audio files produced via the Eye are specific files created for use only on EyeCreate, the software available free with the Eye. These files cannot be used on the XMB and therefore not exported.”Three new titles revealed? :)

Duh, USB 2.0, people!

Nice, but where did EYEdentify go?

I guess I'll stop looking for a BT headset, then.

I guess that Minority Report interface isn't too far off, after all!

Some more info on EyeCreate:
The software lets users save and edit photos, video and audio clips to the PlayStation 3 HD.
Also: "It plugs into a YouTube-esque back end and will include a number of upload and community features as well," studio head Ed Daly explained to Develop.
In Sony's so-called Game 3.0 era, the software seems to be a perfect fit for PS3, added Daly: "There's a whole raft of functionality we can give players with this software when it comes to user-generated content. You can use the camera and microphone to make home movies, or even make stop motion films."

Unless you're cooperating with someone, voice chat isn't much but long silences (made more pronounced by the fact that someone could be talking), heavy breathing here and there, and the occasional laughing or cursing. Sony Taps Hasbro For EOJ Cards 278 Views
hasbrologo.jpgEye of Judgment's crack factor just got kicked up a few notches as Hasbro announces an agreement with Sony to produce and distribute cards worldwide for the upcoming camera card game for the PS3. Why crack? As some of you may know, Hasbro is the parent company of one Wizards of the Coast, producers of a game called Magic the Motherf***ing Gathering (they shorten it sometimes), the game that launched a thousand CCGs and cost me thousands of dollars in the late 90's before the intervention.
I wasn't that bad honestly, but to this day I still get an itchy wallet whenever I see a new CCG come out. In this room I see at least $200 worth of World of Warcraft cards, and I've only actually played the game once.
So when you combine an innovative video game concept with the makers of the most addictive card game ever created, you pretty much get me in an alleyway behind a game shop promising 'favors' in exchange for rare cards.
I am so, so very doomed. Michael Fahey
Hasbro Lends Trading Card Leadership and Expertise to Sony Computer Entertainment's THE EYE OF JUDGMENT™ for PLAYSTATION®3
Collaboration Between Two Companies to Deliver Ground-Breaking Next-Generation Trading Card Gameplay Experience
PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS) announced today that it is working with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on the trading card component of the highly innovative THE EYE OF JUDGMENT™ game for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. The global relationship, which covers Japan, Europe, the U.S. and Asian markets, taps Hasbro's core expertise in trading card games through its Wizards of the Coast subsidiary. Wizards of the Coast holds a patent on trading card games and the methods by which they are played and also produces MAGIC: THE GATHERING®, the world's premier trading card game. Under the agreement, Hasbro will create, manufacture and distribute the trading cards associated with THE EYE OF JUDGMENT video game.
THE EYE OF JUDGMENT presents a new style of gameplay where the player brings creatures of trading cards to life for battle in 3D. Through use of a 3 x 3 board and trading cards, each encrypted with CyberCode, players conquer the field by selecting a card and placing the coded card in front of the PLAYSTATION®Eye for their respective creatures to come to life and battle. Each creature has various skills which will determine the outcome of the battle. Players take turns placing cards as they jostle for control of the board; the winner is the first player to conquer five of the nine fields.
"We are very excited to enter into a collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment on trading cards for THE EYE OF JUDGMENT which will deliver a ground-breaking entertainment experience that uniquely blends the global popularity of traditional trading card games with next-generation video games," said Phil Jackson, Group Executive of Hasbro Games. "Together we're creating a virtual world that brings fantastic trading card-based creatures to life for unprecedented interactive battles that will appeal to millions of fans around the world. It is innovation at its best."
"THE EYE OF JUDGMENT represents a totally new genre in gaming," said Phil Harrison, Corporate Executive, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and President, SCE Worldwide Studios. "Combining Hasbro's clear market leadership in trading card games with the immense power of PLAYSTATION®3 and PLAYSTATION®Eye, is a powerful formula that will result in a revolutionary video game experience that will amaze and engage gamers around the world."
THE EYE OF JUDGMENT is slated for release in fall 2007. The game has already received early accolades from media around the world as well as a prestigious Japan Game Award in the "Futures" division held at last year's Tokyo Game Show.

Unless you're cooperating with someone, voice chat isn't much but long silences (made more pronounced by the fact that someone could be talking), heavy breathing here and there, and the occasional laughing or cursing. If you're REALLY lucky you'll get that one douchebag who will. not. shut. up. about how awesome they are.
You can draw that description of voice chat right out of RFOM....BUT think back to the Socom days if you played it. MOST people talked about strategy and what we could do to win. You HAD to if you wanted to win. Each person lets everyone else know their personal plan if they plan to go solo. That's the kind of game Socom is. Point: it depends on what kind of game it is and whether or not cooperation between teamates is essential. If it's not, you get breathing (or small talk if you're lucky). If it is, you get talk of new approches to victory (or if you're unlucky, some ass-jacket racist who seems to have more fun saying that word than playing).

not...necessarily. For one thing, a realtime HD-Webcamera would own the shit out of anyone's current connection if you're looking at live-chat. So..I don't that was a factor at all.

Guys, it will not be HD. I know a LOT about cameras, and it would cost an arm and a leg to make a HD eyetoy. It is HD vs. every other webcam or console cam out there though, and is the only camera I've seen for under several thousand that can hit 120fps. I've expected this all along.
BTW, what is that other handheld in that eyevio diagram?

They're not. They're just ordinary LEDs.
Guys, it will not be HD. I know a LOT about cameras, and it would cost an arm and a leg to make a HD eyetoy. It is HD vs. every other webcam or console cam out there though, and is the only camera I've seen for under several thousand that can hit 120fps. I've expected this all along.
The biggest problem with making an HD version is that as a little toy peripheral, it needs to be small and have a small lens and small aperture. So if you've got a small lens, aperture, sensor, etc. and you do this at really high res, each pixel doesn't get a whole lot of light to it -- so you end up losing low light performance and effectively demand that the camera can only be used outdoors on a sunny day.
Instead, they favored getting higher framerates and moving uncompressed video at those high framerates (yes, the 640x480x60fps is uncompressed) so you could capture finer details and not get so much noise or blurring per frame.
The camera doesnt look bad but the mic is too big and sticks out too much. I wonder how much this will be...$100
The mic isn't really big. It's just 4 pretty small (cardioid, I think) mics, and there's one covering faceplate for cosmetic reasons. Also, there's no price set yet, AFAIK, but it was said that in the process of designing it, they considered a figure like $100 to be "too high" because it's a relatively minor peripheral.

Just like the last Eye Toy, a game would have to take advantage of this. You will not get this just by randomly plugging the device into your system. So mostly, PSeye does have this in the very same way it shows the camera's capabilities in Eye of Judgement, which was shown at a later E3.
The Eye Toy at E3'05 looked very similar to last-gen's Eye Toy.

You make a very good point, CPI. However, it was said by Phil that Home's parental control implemented into the console would affect the kinda of content youngsters are able to view in the community space. PSP is the same way, not to mention that Home's content is streamed to the veiwers to prevent piracy.
For those of the appropriate age: If you dupe or inappropriately offend viewers with such content, and those viewers complain about it, will result in the offender's account getting banned from the community. More about eyeVio (Stolen from PS3Forums):
If you use x-Pict Story for eyeVio which eyeVio offers,
Even with the person who is poor video compilation it can make the video clip simply from the stock digital camera photograph.
When the photograph which we would like to make the video clip is chosen, then entrust to x-Pict Story for eyeVio entirely.
Just chooses favorite music, the video kind of clip which the professional made automatically completes!
Uploading in eyeVio, also the friend and the family which is left can share the video clip which you complete directly.
http://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/use_step1.gifhttp://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/use_step2.gifhttp://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/use_step3.gif
* The video which is contributed to eyeVio can also stick to Blog and the home page.
* In addition, you take, as for video using the private sharing function of eyeVio, It is possible also to release to just the person of specification.
http://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/tips_point1_title.gif
http://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/tips_point1_pic.gif
With BGM, because there is production of the image effect which respectively is, it becomes the atmosphere which is different completely even in the same photograph.
For example, if sample video above tune changes, being different so much, it is visible!

http://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/tips_point2_title.gif
http://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/tips_point2_pic.gif
It changes more or less, with BGM, but as for the photograph when 25 are taken in, when video completes, balance becomes good. In addition, when the scenery and the casual snap of that time are inserted in addition to the person, story characteristic increases.
* Because it can take in the photograph up to only 60, when you insert too much, there are times when it does not enter into video.
http://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/tips_point3_title.gif
http://eyevio.jp/app/xPict/img_xpict/tips_point3_pic.gif
When drawing up video, as for the image effect because of random, at each time it makes the video which is different is completed.

Wow, we didn't even have to wait for E3 for a big bang of great news today :-DYeah I was thinking the same thing in another thread...
2007 is just the real coming out party for what PS3 is going to be about. I was a little scared at first that Sony have lost what's important and what's established the Playstation brand. But the last several months have wiped that slate for them man...
It seems like there really trying to bring back the same variety that PS2 had, just focusing more on online this time. Just the idea of making your own videos (in good quality) and sticking them in XMB is enough for me to get the camera. But there's so much more use for it. Games will specifically made for it, integration into Home, quality voice/chat without the need for a headset. I like Sony...I like A LOT!
Off Topic: I really need a bigger Hdd. I'm gonna need more space for Home/LBP/Eye3 videos...I have so much Naruto on my Hdd it's ridiculous!

^Just delete the filler eps, that'll free up a lot of space. (I did)

Will we be able to do live video chat straight from the XMB (main PS3 menu)?

I think that can be done already with the old eyetoy.

VG is totally correct.
I made this a couple of times with a buddy who has a old EyeToy cam.
It works well, not perfect but its pretty cool.

Interesting that they already got Nike on the idea, they are usually quite good at spotting trends.
