Garf found the story about Dell coming with Linux in the future, but it was unsure which distro. Well, just checking dailytech and it's been decided

Ubuntu wins! (surprise?) (http://www.dailytech.com/Ubuntu+Linux+Coming+to+Dell+PCs/article7107.htm)

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

Give a round of applause to Dell folks, they have made a very very smart move indeed.

I saw a report yesterday that numerous sources in dell have told the exact same thing. At that point i knew it was almost certain to be ubuntu. It's pretty hard to deny it, Micheal dell runs it on his lappy (probably for testing or just seeing what linux is about, though i suspect he is a long-time linux user.) And that poll they had up a few weeks ago had ubuntu as an option, it was guaranteed to acquire an overwhelming demand due to it's rep.

I was thinking that they would choose SLED (suse linux enterprise desktop), as most in dell's position have done so and it is also a good choice, but i am happier they have gone with ubuntu, it is easier to use and free. Mark Shuttleworth has denied being in talks with dell but you can bet he has spent long nights arguing with them and pleading for them to install ubuntu.

It's a good choice, it's hard to overlook the popularity of ubuntu, it's a solid distro built on a proven backend (if you don't like debian you can go to hell). It's a trend and i'm glad they have supported it.

I totally agree, from what I've experienced with Ubuntu it's really friendly for those migrating from Windows. Granted I have a lot more computer knowledge than the average consumer, with synaptic and stuff you can really get going pretty quickly without having to deal a lot with the terminal.

Then once your comfortable you have just a whole world of customization and tweaking you can do. I know I've read that there are distros that allow a lot more control over your computer than Ubuntu, but I believe it offers a lot in terms of new users, and someone could definitely get everything they want from it.

I plan on keeping my Windows partition on my PC for the long run, but in all honesty if Vista keeps acting up on my laptop I may wipe it clean and use Ubuntu!

hahaha, you are doing well young grasshopper. :pleased:

Ubuntu may not be the best system for fiddling with the small things but what 30-50 year old average joe "what does DV AVI PAL stand for?" user going to do with that either? In this sense ubuntu is one of the best.

Instead of my 70-80+ first time computer-using nana ringing me up every now and then for xp assistance about her computer randomly crashing or apps that need a smack, or computer just going slow (which is almost impossible to fix with xp, especially over the phone to someone you have to say "V for vowel, not tiger!".... A woman her age would not run into any problems with ubuntu, it would last her many years without maintenance and it would still be fast, it would likely outrun the hardware... I would set it up to play dvd's and mp3's etc then all will be good. Instead of ringing up about BSOD's and updates to her computer that are supposed to fix mouse cursor vulnerability but somehow for no reason at all BREAK THE SOUND CARD DRIVER! (yes that is true, i also made a thread about it, many have had the smae issue, i mean how the fuck does a mouse cursor patch break a sound driver????) I will get phone calls and e-mails asking for help on doing something she doesn't know how to do, or for me to recommend an application. Which is both easier on my end, but more importantly, easier on her end.

So I applaud dell for this move, and expect more from them in the future.

here is the story on the official dell blog:

http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/05/01/13147.aspx

It has a video interview with mark! And a nice touch is that is downloadable in .ogg!

Now if only Dell would let us have a harddrive that didn't already have 4 primaries on it!!!

Teh Roxor!

I am in no need for another PC, but I almost want to buy one out of principle.

lol, yeah! i don't think they will do that with ubuntu, just because you can boot from the ubuntu cd and rescue it anyway, or use another disc like the systemrescue cd. But yes, having the 4 primaries was DUM! especially when we tried to partition it, i can't remember how we did it....i think we used a logical but i wasn't shore if it would work well.

Yeah, we made an extended and then from there did the logical and the swap. It was definitely a pain in the ass but it has been working fine.

Garfunkel
05-02-2007, 08:21 AM
haha yeah that's right. I just didn't want to do it at first because i was unaware if ubuntu would be poopy with it or not, some distros really don't like it.

Know what I was just thinking? This Dell thing could really help me out with my soundcard and Linux support, because I know that the article mentioned Dell talking with Shuttleworth and making sure the Dell hardware was supported, and the Soundblaster X-Fi is offered on most of the Dell rigs (for sure the XPS's which is what I have)

Garfunkel
05-02-2007, 09:26 AM
good point, they might release some open source drivers or something :D

Major oem's jumping on the bandwagon are what makes our hardware support greater. it's already 1000 times better then windows (considering we support so many darn architectures)

This is definitely a huge accomplishment for the Open Source community. But... everyone that supports and is involved in the Open Source community is more than enough geek to build their own, cheaper and more powerful computer for their OS.

Although if someone who is just getting into computers is going to buy their own rig through a major PC manufacture than this gives them an OS, for free, which everyone likes. Although most will stick to what they know.

Garfunkel
05-02-2007, 02:39 PM
agreed, this won't help many people like us, we are smart enough to build our own systems for cheaper then dell and install our own things on them, but for every one else, mums and dads with families this is a boom. Competition is a good thing, lets see what microsoft and monkey boy make of this. It proves dell is communistic ;)

sweet! I wonder if this means they will get rid of the "Dell recommends microsoft windows vista" statement at the top of every page. I hope so, i can't stand it when OEM's say that when it is just ms paying them millions to say it.

That looks to be an XPS system in that picture, so hopefully this won't be limited to the budget user, but everyone will get a shot. Plus I think the ones buying the heavier duty machines are the ones who would be more inclined to give Linux a try...

There was a rumor that one of the systems ubuntu was going to be installed on was a dell xps so it's highly probable.

And that's the reason it will probably stay. Ubuntu isn't paying them any cash ;-]

NO!!!!!:duh: I didn't see one YET, but it looks like it will happen soon enough...

I know...I know....:swear:

Seriously though, there are some nice article popping up about Ubuntu over the web. How MS may finally have some comp. How Vista may actually help Linux adoption because of it's price, etc...

Ubuntu is really going to the top of #1 distro for Linux. Dell is already on boat, and another rumor it Toshiba...

Looking good...I can't imagine a PC actually built for Linux out of the store. The built-in apps and software would be tailored for that PC...Just pure awesome...Firefox, Gaim, Amarok, codecs, eyecandy right out of the box!=-o

Btw-what's this Linspire distro?? It's gotta lot of flak about now representing Linux and being too strict...

Khaos
05-09-2007, 05:45 AM
Wikipedia is your friend. ;-] It's basically a commercial distro, first of all. Also:

Linspire has drawn some criticism from the free software community. This has included claims that they tried to rig the Distrowatch Linux popularity rankings,[19] and criticism for including proprietary software, with GNU founder Richard M Stallman commenting: "No other GNU/Linux distribution has backslided so far away from freedom. Switching from MS Windows to Linspire does not bring you to freedom, it just gets you a different master."[20]

on the linux action show they mentioned that and had kevin carmony on the show (ceo of company), he personally removed the infringing code from the database when he found out.

he's a good guy.
