Okay, my Dad has a Macintosh and loves them. I use a Windows XP. He says he will never change, but he has never really used a Windows OS. I think Apple is too highly priced for what you get. How can I convince him to get a Windows OS instead?
Help would be appreciated because I basicly ran out of ways to convince him. Typical Apple person.

1. Apple overprices everything even if you are getting somewhat better performance
2. Windows XP > OSX
3. Windows XP is a compatable with a shitload more stuff then macs are
4. Mac's are only good for surfing the web because you cant really get any viruses since they only own 5% of the market

why do you need him to change? does it even matter? If he's happy he should be able to keep using it.

But I don't want him to consistantly waste money!
He gets pissed off with his computer even though it is a newer one. Its always so slow and has so many problems during web surfing and frequently has to borrow my computer.
Tommorow we are going to Best Buy so I will show him some awesome computers. (even though I would rather get one online from a hardcore computer company)

eeeeeck. has your dad even looked to see if its a software problem IE spyware or a virus or maybe even your registry is messed up....i can believe someone would just go buy a new comp without checking for those things.

No, its slow, it always was when you compare to average windows. No virus or anything. Its just a apple computer. They are slower on the internet and while multitasking even though he has 384mb RAM.

you are obviously not very computer savy. i am so let me explain. i use windows and as macs. windows is bloated crap. osx 10.3 is a smooth system. you said his mac was slow, what are the specs? how new is new? if he has a g5, they are pricey but fast. so is a top o the line p4. mac os is superior to windows xp

All depends on what you want to do. I personally like windows just because its compatible with anything on the market, including games. Macs on the other hand, when they do get programs, they're badass and run great. And OSX>XP, I mean hell, xp copied a great deal from the osx program.

I like Mac a bit more than Windows. I don't play computer games, and I mainly do Photoshop on my comp so it works out better for me.

You can't change an apple person.

I've got both OSX (10.3/Panther) and XP and I think OSX is superior in every way besides the amount of programs and games available for it.
OSX is much more user friendly, much nicer looking, much more stable and secure, less bloated, etc.

The reason why Macs don't deel bloated is because only two programs run on it.
Serious though, I think Windows OS is the way forward for computing.

The problem with my dads mac and all of them sometimes, is the update. You know with all those versions. Like 10.3.2 I hate that when you download something and it requires 10.2.5 and you have 10.1.6 because you did not download the software. Then it becomes hard as hell to download it. While with Windows, you don't have to worry about that.

Despite everything I know about Mac computer's and the OS that steve....jobs.... built, I am still a wintel person. I like my x86, and I like my windows, dos-es, and linuxes.
Fankly, OSX sucks on any Mac running the G4 processor. Besides it already being slow, thanks Motorola..., the processor does not perform nearly as well as was assumed by customers upgrading from OS-9 to 10. There was a small flurry of complains, and I believe Apple was going to do something about it.
In regards. OSX is a three tier operating system speed stick. You will have to pay to upgrade to 10.2 or the 10.3 version, Jaguar and Panther. This is where I believe this should have been a free upgrade. OSX may be a superior and cleaner OS, but there is a reason for that. One, the number of items the operating system has to support it far below the bar on a PC system. A windows system has to be able to run 90% of the worlds computers, and be compatible with most of its technology. Being that it is #1, it is targeted the most by hackers and virus writes. This is the part that angers me, some Mac and Linux users say that this is because the windows architecture is weak, now this is both true and false. It is true that aspects of windows core structure needs tweaking, it is difficult to do so and also keep pace with the demands of the world. As fast as M$ can patch the quilt of an OS win XP is, another security breech is discovered but the countless people using it. If any other OS were on the same level as windows, I am sure that their system would be picked apart as well with viruses and security holes. This is all a question of functionality verus security. Windows does not have a luxury of being small enough to have both. If linux were a 9/10 of computer OS superpower, the source code being available would cause even more havoc with the "Secure" OS.
In terms of brute power, the PC wins, hands down, weather software be optimized or unoptimised. Apple is a mainly property company. They control almost everything the goes into their computers for both hardware and software. The PC world has everyone making decisions about what goes into a PC, then has to solve the huge problem of figuring out how all of these components will work in an infinite combination of all different computers, running a infiantely large number of softwares. Sure, it doesn't always work, but it does for the most part.
Do not quote me on this, but I believe that the Mac Os does not have a registry in the same sense as windows. The registry is both a cure and blessing...:)
Sure XP may be bloated, with well over 45 GB of sorce code stored at M$ just on NT line of OSes alone, but you people have to understand, they have to attemp to make everything work at once. They will always be bound to old technology untill the mass public adpots a new one. 64-bit computing being an example. Apple can roll out a new computer that has a native 64bit chip, cutting off the 32 bit trail. Intel and AMD have only been able to update 32bit computering with 64bit extensions for the reason that they would shoot themselves in the foot to level the 32 bit world behind for a native 64 bit chip. The intel's Itantium "Itanic", has been a 64 bit chip for almost 10 years and still only sells about 100,000-200,000 of these chips a year to high-end bussiness customers. Microsoft could not just create a native 64bit operating system and leave the 32bit people behind. If windows "LongHorn" could only run on 64bit chips, M$ would see lakes of red ink for the market would not support it.
The reason why Macs don't deel bloated is because only two programs run on it.

I'm sorry your dad is having so many speed issues with his G4, speed stick. Perhaps there's something else going on there. I have a 500 MHz iBook with 384 MB of RAM and have very few speed issues. Make sure your dad is surfing the Web using Apple's Safari Web browser. It is by far the fastest browser available on the Mac platform, but there are certainly many to choose from. Also, you can avoid having OS version conflicts by setting Software Update to update on a scheduled basis. That way you can keep your system as up-to-date as possible, and you'll eliminate your problem of not being able to run Apple's newer software.
Good luck trying to convert your father. Very few of us who use Macs have any interest in ever going to Windows (especially if we switched from Windows to begin with). As long as I can afford a Mac I certainly have no interest in using Windows, except for the occaisional recreational usage.

Thx, I will tell him that safari is better.
Do you know any place on the web where you can find all the updates in one place so we don't have to search for half an hour for updates. Or will the automatic update do that for us?
I still don't know why he stoped using it.
By the way, how long is panther going to last. We are running into the city today, maybe I should tell him to get it. Or is it obsolete.

Let Software Update do all of the work for you. That's what Apple designed it for. I'm actually running it right now on my Mom's old iBook. It works very well. Panther is the newest and best version of OS X to date. The next version won't be out until sometime early next year most likely. I'd recommend updating, but it's not necessary if you don't feel the need to spend the money. I'm running Jaguar right now on my Mom's computer, and it runs fine, but I'm definitely a fan of Panther on my computer.

• Good for your dad!
• Mac OS X > Anything (including, and especially, XP)
• My 336 mhz G3 iBook running lastest Mac OS is faster than our 600 mhz PC
• The only good Windows program is iTunes (http://www.itunes.com)
