I was looking back at my pictures from the PS3 preview event and noticed in this picture:

That there's a light emitting from the Sixaxis controller, and this is mere weeks before the PS3 came out! (picture was taken Oct. 26th, 2006) I thought it was interesting enough to post and see what you guys think happened since, last I heard, there's wiring there for an LED but it looks like it was removed :stirpot:

That was canned. The old devkit controllers have that as well. I'm glad it is gone. I think it looks tacky.

I think it looked sweet, but I wonder why it was removed, especially so close to release, it seems.

Yeah, the devkit units still have them, I guess they were an unnecessary expense, caused the plastic to melt, or just looked plain stupid. We will never know for sure.

All of the controller boards have a LED power line, that's why some people have been able to mod it. Who knows why they discarded that feature (probably to save a bit of money), but it's no big deal at all.

well..i don't know ...but i remember some ppl here was talking about PLAYSTATION EYE™ using the Leds on the SIXAXIS® controller to detect the movement in 3D ( as a sensor bar ) so , it may they remove that cuz they don't want it to side effect this..

also there is always a chance for it to return with the new SIXAXIS® controller ( with rumble edition ).

Well yes, the contacts are still there for the 5th LED, but wiring an LED there doesn't do anything, theres a missing resister on the circuit that seems to complete the circuit for the 5th LED

Even when the resistor was replaced, the light wouldn't turn on. The Mod above is always on when the controller is on. It's wired to a spare ground and to one of the pins on the motion sensor connector for the power

Hope that helps?

I guess it was disabled via the controllers firmware, since they didn't want to wast even a little bit of battery power on something that had been removed.

^ so maybe they just do it for saving battery power ...

but..i set my 2nd SIXAXIS® as 7th controller ( led 3 and 4 lights on ) but i dont see any differents in battery lifes then my 1st SIXAXIS®..so i dont think it's a battery life issue

I don't see it as being discarded; perhaps it was 'left' from the previous model design?

^ i don't remember the boomerang has Light-on on home button ...also the last official press release photos before PS3 launch shows the RED home button ...i think it's last sec thing to remove it

The boomerang was never demonstrated.

It's funny that I've seen advertisements on TV where the home button lits in red, by the way.

I agree Raitei, I like the blue led mod, it looks similar to the blue light when you insert a game/blu-ray disc.

Does anyone know where I can find a guide to attempt this mod? It looks like a fairly simple mod.
