View Full Version : PSN at 1.5 million users
After a mere 6 months, Sony has created a very real online presence.
Straight from Gamer's Day, we've got the numbers of Sony's online world. First off, over 1.5 million users have created online accounts, with 775,000 coming from North America (we don't know if these are individual PS3s, as some people have multiple accounts for differing regions).
At this 6 month mark, Microsoft had only 500,000 users on Xbox Live. For those of you who think that's not a fair comparison, the 500,000 number also includes the free silver edition.
Six million pieces of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store. They didn't announce the ratio of free to paid content, but it's an impressive number nonetheless.
Finally, the 1.5 million users have logged in a total of 115 million times. So using our impressive math and reasoning skills, that's an average of 77 log-ins per PS3 owner. Not bad at all Sony.
Well the PlayStation Network has a bright future ahead of itself with Home on the horizon, but these numbers tell us it isn't doing so bad right now either.

cool stuff..
and about Microsoft live users , well...MS loses XBL users like crazy right and left after they banned all users with Modded X360s from login to live service..

This is kinda of a no-brainer...
Free vs. Paid subscription:huh:
Not knocking Sony at all though, it's a great way to get users, and home will just spike these numbers even more. I'm surprised other companies didn't realize this. I'll take a little bit of clunky free over smooth paid for anyday!

Free vs. Paid subscription:huh: Haven't you read the bolded quote? Although I'll agree that free online vs paid-for only online is a no-brainer indeed, but there are more features than those.
Assuming that the people who created several accounts are about 1% of the total, it's definately growing very quickly. It's a shame it's taking them so long to put more content in the store, that would make it even more popular. Good thing there's a lot of content coming soon, so it should be totally fine later this year.

Yeah it's certainly an accomplishment, but I really don't even think think the store's content is the reason why it's adoption rate is so fast...
It's free, no harm in signing up, and when people do, then they get pleasantly surprised with titles like flOw and CAC;)
The real reason to sign up for PSN IMO is Home...
I just got done watching the 1up show and coming from a bunch of guys that love there X360's, Home is still seen as something that's going to be huge, whether you like it or not! The same with LBP. (I'm sure your gonna have to have an account to upload levels) These big additions to the network is when we're going to see PS3 online users surpass every other platform simply because everyone who buys a PS3 is probably going to sign up!! Even if you hate the idea of having a 3D "myspace" MMO on your PS3-Only the most stubborn won't try it out to see what the fuss is...
Going to be huge for PS3 in Fall, and the content for PSN is taking a while to come, but when it does, it'll have a large variety just the PS3's software. Games actually using motion control and taking advantage of Cell with things like multi-tasking and animations. (Lair/Uncharted springs to mind)
Sry for the rant VG, but I think you understand my excitement. PS3 and the network is certainly in it's infancy. And I think it's going to be really exciting..

Wow, thats REALLY impressive numbers.
+rep BTW ;)

Free vs. Paid subscription:huh:
let me spill that out for you:
PS3 free users = Live free + paying users x 3
to add insult to injury, this is during the same time span. a time span which X2 had no new competition and all the media's whore love and attention.
PS3 did that through all the doom and gloom charades and high price point.
the answer to that equation is "who's your daddy?" :lick:

see.. what im not sure is, if they mean numbers from the first 6 months of 360 lifespan or live lifeplan
if the former, then well, wouldn't a lot of of live users have already you know, signed up with there Xbox 1's?
If the later, then they did have a lot of competition and were in an already dominated market, and so, lower numbers could almost be expected.
Ah how i love the way statistics can be manipulated
then well, wouldn't a lot of of live users have already you know, signed up with there Xbox 1's?
they are counting the ones logged in via X2 systems regardless if they started their account on Box or not. that is the presumption.
I have like...5 accounts.
and you think Live users only have single accounts?
nothing is left from either services. all the numbers are mashed up together in face of each platform.

The best thing about this is.....
My god! Look at the attraction for third parties to advertise!! The ratio of people with PS3s and them using PSN is really great, this is a great opportunity for an advertising platform run by Sony. I'm sure PSN is really turning heads among the gaming publisher communities and so is Sony.
The platform Sony is providing is such a like... synergistic and mutualistic environment. I can only see good things really for the relationships and success that companies involved with this will have if/when PSN and the PS3 really take off.
My god! Look at the attraction for third parties to advertise!!
and you know what is the best thing they hear about PSN? it is totally free! that means any user with broadband access can get into it, play in it, do a lot of things. there is no restrictions of any kind. these advert guys love that kind of access. :)

I really think that home is going to be a much bigger hit for publishers then we think. The way they can advertise through it is just about as close as you can get to the game.

Home will funtion like a 24/7 E3 within one year...mark my words i have been dead on about predicting home for two years now. once game devs see the opertunity to show there work within home gaming sights like 1up and gamespot will only exist for the other systems and those who do not own a PS3.
buy 2010 PSInext might just have a bigger home meeting hall than textbased fourms.
maybe this is why E3 is so small now?

That's a pretty impressive number so quickly.
Many people said that Sony wouldn't be able to deliver XBL-quality service for PS3, but looks like the public who's using it is disagreeing...

Nah it got so small because it was getting so big it started to eat its own tail.
And as far as PSN goes, it's hard to say no to free. Especially when it's right there, in your face. It takes little effort. And Sony has everything to prove, so the service is going to get better to where it at least matches xbox live gold.I'm confused as to why every PS3 isn't online and registered (aside from having narrowband internet at home).

The main reason everyone is not online is because they dont actualy realize how simple it is to get set up. A co-worker of mine who's a casual gamer also has a PS3 and he said he never bothered to set it up online because it looked hard. And I have to say, I thought the same thing before I went online last gen. A while back my causin called me over his house to connect his 360 to the internet for him, and once I showed him how he couldn't believe how simple it actualy was. Alot of people are just intemidated by this online stuff and dont realize its even easier then connecting a PC to the internet.

By Sony allowing developers to design assets into their games for you to find and unlocked so that you can customize your Home environment will really gain a lot of attention, I think. Unlike a dull trophy, achievement, or gamer score, things like this will persuade manys gamers to keep playing both in and outside of Home.

well, we can assume on average each person has 2 accounts (as many don't know they can make multiple accounts). so about 750k unique users as a rough figure.
