The braking noise has been the same since GT1  Shouldn't they renew that?
As for engine noises and those things, I think they shine more when using manual change.
and their sqealing tyres havnt changed & its so annoying

I'll translate some things for you from this Spanish interview (http://www.meristation.com/v3/des_articulo.php?pic=GEN&id=cw476568836d01b):
In GT and GT2, both for PS1, a designer spent a day to model a car. In GT3 and GT4, for PS2, the same worker spent a month modeling the same care due to the increased amount of polygons. In GT5 for PS3, they require 6 months to do the same job.
We're before something immensely detailed. It's a lot of work. We could consider and I'd like to think Gran Turismo is like the benchmark, the acid test, to measure the limit of each console generation. At this point, I'd like to show the limits of Gran Turismo itself, or else we couldn't call it Gran Turismo. At least I could not. It's a great responsibility.
"Why are you releasing 'Prologue'? Many people don't want to spend their money in what they consider a demo (Note: like there has ever been such a demo with that amount of amazing, amazing content and features.)
Yamauchi: We believe that at our current pace, GT5 will be ready by December 2008. 4 years will have passed since GT4. It's too much time, mostly for the series fan. There are plenty of things left to do. We also have the online features. It's a completely different product compared to GT4. It's way superior in all aspects. We need to test it fully so that it becomes a perfect product. I consider it dangerous, to say the least, to release a game like this one without having subdued it to the toughest quality assurance tests. Also, since it's something so important, I fear of online features failing. That would be a fatal blow. I intend to introduce online features bit by bit. Another reason to release Prologue is the simple fact that it's been too long since GT4. I want to get the user feedback ASAP. And Prologue is a good way to obtain so.
So, when is GT5's launch due? End of 2008?
Yamauchi: Yes, Christmas 2008 is the the planned release date for now. Anyway, it's not final yet. It's been tough to develop Prologue. To get the picture, if my current development team did GT1 again, they would finish it in two weeks. Back then we spent 4 years. It's very hard work.
I see. And the fans also expect that tremendous quality in the new Gran Turismo, right?
Yamauchi: Yes, it's a great responsibility. That's why I want it to be perfect. And that's why I can't tell for sure when it'll be released.
Regarding the vehicles, have they been redesigned completely?
Yamauchi: Completely, from scratch. We have reused absolutely nothing (*emphasis on this*) from previous versions. Everything is new.
[Yamauchi elaborates on how he even wants the back seat interior to be perfect even if the players would rarely see it]
How long did it take to model all the cars?
Yamauchi: A designer spends roughly 6 months in average. 50 cars are 300 months. That's 25 years. The tracks are a lot more work. It's longer than a year each. We have 30 people working on the tracks.
[Yamauchi talks about how PS3 is the system that can provide the absolute best picture and how perfect he wants GT5 to be again, how it'll support Full HD 1080p60, how the players will actually see the very same they'd see if they drove a given car in a given track in real life, etc.]
Regarding realism, when will we see car damage?
Yamauchi: Right now we're testing this. We will see car damage in GT5. There are three problems to solve though. Firstly, some car manufacturers don't care to see damage in their cars but others would never allow that. Some cars will be damaged and others won't, depending on the manufacturer. Secondly, the simulation. In Daytona Speedway, for instance, going slightly sideways when getting out of the banked curve and entering the straight section and hitting slightly the rear part of our car against the sides of the track will make our car become utter junk. Game over. It's a small mistake, but physics calculations tell us we'd undergo a 150 G force. That equals death. The car is literally disintegrated. We do not want that. We do not want to destroy the cars. I don't like that. That's ultrarealistic simulation, but if it happens, the game is over, you lose your car. I'm resisting to accept that kind of effect. Right now we're looking into how to make pure simulation and these kind of situations be compatible with each other. And the third problem, the fact that many driving games out there feature this kind of accidents, but I've never seen one which actually provide something positive or are perfect from a technical standpoint. I've got to think a lot about it yet, but I understand the series supporters do want damage and accidents because, for the better or worse, they're an integral part of reality.
[Yamauchi talks on how they're trying to emulate human behavior for the game AI, and how tough it is to do so.]
Is Sony imposing any restriction or forcing you to do something in particular?
Yamauchi: Just the release date. Till now we had some flexibility in that aspect. I'll tlet you know we're the movie's villains to Sony. But we don't listen to them that much (*laughs*). Fortunately we have quite a lot of independence. For that reason, GT5 won't be out for sale until it's finished according to my criterion. Sony understands I'm a perfectionist and they allow me that. The hardcore fans would notice if something's wrong in the game. They're like me. That's why I want to perfect it to the max. In terms of conceptual aspects or limits, Sony does not interfere a lot, I have a lot of freedom in those regards.
Would you like to take a breath of fresh air and create a new successful series in the videogame world?
Yamauchi: I've wanted to create an RPG since long ago but I don't have the time to do so. (*laughs and remains thoughtful*)
[Yamauchi says that PS3 has the power but it's still expensive. It features Blu-ray for the future, and says he's very patient.]
Excuse me, but are you telling me Gran Turismo 5 is only possible on PS3 at the moment?
Yamauchi: Yes, exactly. On the other hand, Xbox 360 is not a system designed to support Full HD since the beginning. There are very few 1080p60 games on Xbox 360. It seems like a system designed for the inferior 720p. We're talking about significant differences in this very generation of home consoles. Soon enough people will give credit to the strong attractive of Full HD, of the true high resolution. I want to do videogames that take full advantage of each generation's technical abilities.
[Yamauchi says it would be totally frustrating to develop for Wii because of its lack of processing power and that while people, the industry and media say PS3, Wii and 360 are "Next Gen", the only true Next Gen is provided by PS3].
When will we see Gran Turismo Portable?
Yamauchi: We are developing it right now. It'll be released after Gran Turismo 5. We're going to make it a complementary game.
Will you take a rest after GT5's release?
Yamauchi: Due to the online nature of this game, we still need one more year to get it out. We'll progress day by day. The plan is not to start working on GT6 immediately after that. We'll keep adding features or improving things in GT5 taking advantage of the Internet connection. That's why I won't have time to rest. In these 15 years of Gran Turismo I haven't had any holidays.
[The interviewer asks Yamauchi if he spends any night at the studio and he says it's not the case lately but there was a year when he only spent 4 nights at home].
[Yamauchi says that the Japanese videogame industry peaked in the 80's and 90's and that the current game designers aren't open to true innovation, something he hopes will change].

After playing GT5:P It's got me feeling good again about driving games, the weight of the cars with the G25 Wheel is uncanny and the cockpit view conveys the best sense of dept on any game I've played including the PC Sim games.

They look insane to me LOL! Seriously, way back in the days of pure speculation about ps3, I always tried to get a picture in my head of how far PD will be able to push the car models, but this is more than I expected. I really feel this game really shows the ps3 and what can be achieved with it.
@ VG: Thanks for the interview and pictures man! As you know, the game is said to run at native 1080p and if those pictures are taken form a good 1080p screen it could be the answer for no aliasing being present I believe...

Proven twice bullshit rhetoric.
1- other games have provided extensive damage models for the same vehicles within his own current game. From a few doing it lightly, to heavily realized in others. I'm surprised he's still using this tired excuse, but of course everyone is eating it up anyway.
2- worse has been done in film with the ACTUAL cars, not virtual.
It's cute and all that he uses the word "perfect" every so often to create some nice falsehood quality for his title. However, he's done this with EVERY interview for EACH game and none have proven to be perfect from a "technical standpoint" within any serious level.
KY, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
So with that said, this is a nice interview, but as usual, a full bag of hot-aired bullshit.
But hey, at least the game LOOKS nice.

Uh…as far as the ground textures being blurry and flat, isn’t that just a simple byproduct of using motion blur? Why is this even an argument? The game obviously doesn’t have any serious flaws, other than antialiasing.
Of all the things to pick at about the game, visuals wouldn’t be one of them.

It's a game FFS, stop being so damn critical of the tiniest details. Apart from when your looking at these pics, who's gonna notice the texture of the grass when you're driving past it at 150mph or whatever.

Well the aliasing problems that the game has are seen IN PERSON, not through pics taken from a hand cam or from photo mode. Other than the Suzuka Circuit not being particularly pleasing to the eye (and still using some PS2 assets from earlier complaints), it’s the only severe graphical flaw of the game.
I see it a lot too though.

I have the final answer to their issues that they are having with putting in damage modeling. The same answer I had for Evolution Studios when they were debating whether or not to allow sixaxis steering in Motorstorm (and it worked out well for them... thanks simon...assuming you listened to those e-mails!)... Options, options, options!!!!
A arcade mode, with no damage modelling, a simulation mode, with limited damage modelling, and a full sim mode with full damage modelling (meaning you bump the car in the wrong way, race is over). The latter 2 would also only be limited to the cars they were allowed to damage.
GTAce
12-22-2007, 06:20 PM
Lol sorry frosty but i think thats the most obvious solution.
Even in Forza 1 you could change the damage modeling pretty similiar.
It would be even more easier when you could just switch it on, off or limited for every race and when you turn it off you get less A-Spec points in your profile (which is also online so pretty similar to an achievement system).

Nissan turns Gran Turismo GT-R into the real thing
Nissan GT-R
By Bob English
Despite all the hype, Nissan’s new legend-brought-to-life GT-R turns out to be just your every-day, every-man’s supercar.
http://stb.msn.com/i/A7/77E8BFB66F974DAEE6CE6B90885730.jpg
SENDAI, Japan - The Nissan GT-R name may have acquired mythical status among the fast car cognoscenti, not to mention a generation of video gamers, but in reality you can jump into this latest example, fire it up, and drive it docilely down to the Quickie Mart for a slushy, or your favourite corner kiosk for makisushi, in rain or sleet or snow or dark of night.
Nissan GT-R
Nissan GT-R - Click to see the complete gallery (photo: Bob English)
But then again, if you happen to be in the neighbourhood, and a pretty good shoe, you could also take it for a spin around the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit in seven minutes and 38 seconds. Which would leave the driver's of any SLR McLarens or Porsche 911 GT2s you encountered with nothing to remember you by but the images of those four round taillights - so familiar to Gran Turismo video racers - burned into their retinas.
"Our objective was to develop a new type of supercar," says chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno, of the GT-R. With its 480-horsepower, twin-turbo V6, its rear-mounted six-speed transaxle-type gearbox and all-wheel-drive system, it launches like a missile to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. And with a drag coefficient of just 0.27, the GT-R can slice through the air at 300 km/h plus. But it also offers every-day practicality.
It’s time to get in line
The GT-R is on sale now in Japan, but Canadians will have to wait until February to ogle it at Toronto's Canadian International Auto Show. The on-sale date is scheduled for June, with a price tag of about $82,000 (the only option is a $3,000 hand-polished silver paint job). That's about what Porsche wants for a 295-hp Cayman S, just shy of $10,000 less than a 505-hp Corvette Z06, and almost $60,000 less than a 420-hp Audi R8. Which does make the GT-R a sort of econo-supercar...
Get in line fast if you want one though; Nissan Canada product planner Brian Murphy says we're only getting 125, and the U.S. 1,500. Nissan only plans to build 12,000 a year.
A GT-R History Lesson
Before we get deeper into the new GT-R, let's look at the history behind this little known in North America model.
Nissan GT-R

Now called simply the Nissan GT-R, this model was originally part of Nissan's Skyline line-up, sold exclusively in Japan. The original acquired its mythical status by dominating on the race track and later versions became familiar to millions through Sony's legendary Gran Turismo video driving games.
The first Skyline was produced by the Prince Motor Company in 1957. It was taken over by Nissan in the 1960s. Skylines were typically stolid work-a-day designs up until 1961 when the 94-hp Sport BLRA 3-Series, designed by Italy's Michelotti was introduced. It was followed in 1964 by the Skyline 2000 GT which was originally developed for racing, but later became a production model.
The first Skyline to carry the GT-R (for Grand Turismo Racer) designation arrived in 1969 as a four-door sedan, followed by coupes in 1971. It was powered by a 160-hp, 2.0-litre six. It was dropped in 1973 and didn't reappear until 1989, promptly resuming the legend building process with a new generation of drivers and video virtual racers.
A new kind of supercar
Mizuno says supercars have traditionally been aimed at drivers with advanced skills. "But our new multi-performance supercar can be driven fast and skilfully by just about anybody in just about any road conditions."
Nissan GT-R

Which is pretty much true, as I discovered at the Sendai Highlands circuit, north of Tokyo.
The GT-R is an unbelievably quick, fast and competent car that I found I could fling around the winter-cold tarmac of the tight and twisty Sendai circuit at the ragged edge limits of control with little drama - thanks to my consummate skill, of course, but also the AWD system and a fully-functional suite of electronic driving aids. But it's also a car that, as an hour and a half drive through the countryside revealed, is perfectly liveable on the road.
Room for two - plus maybe the kiddies
At 4655 mm, the GT-R is considerably longer than a 911's 4461 mm but, while it's called a 2+2, fitting two in the back isn't really a practical proposition. There's a generous amount of luggage space in the chunky tail section, though.
Nissan GT-R

The cockpit isn't particularly roomy either, although certainly not cramped. North American models will get seats with broader squabs than the ones on the right-hand drive models I drove. Analogue instruments, with a large centre-mounted tachometer, are bracketed by a small-diameter, leather-wrapped wheel with large, fixed, gearshift paddles behind.
But Nissan turned to PlayStation for design help with the graphics in the multifunction display that provides engine operation readouts, plus driving performance data on g-forces, steering angle, brake force, acceleration, speed etc. A row of "set-up" switches allow you to choose suspension settings, transmission shift mapping and alter the vehicle dynamics system programming - just like in the Gran Turismo game.
Comfort is the setting of choice for road driving, with Sport very stiff and R-mode best reserved for the track A little road noise intrudes, but not enough to spoil your enjoyment of the superb Bose audio system. A navigation system and all the usual comfort and safety features are included.
Clever-tech/high-tech
The GT-R isn't perhaps as exotic as some of its much pricier rivals, but it is a very clever design, built around a new 'front-midship' platform constructed from carbon fibre, aluminium castings and lightweight steel that locates the engine well back and balances it with a rear-mounted transaxle. Its 3.8-litre, VR38 twin-cam V-6 (assembled by individual Takumis, or craftsmen) relies on twin turbochargers to make its 480 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and maximum torque of 435 lb-ft that's available between 3,200 rpm and 5,200 rpm.
Nissan GT-R

If you're wondering why Nissan didn't screw the boost up a bit and join the 500 horsepower club, the answer is: wait for the Spec V version rumoured for 2010...
The complex transaxle unit contains the all-wheel-drive transfer case, twin-clutch six-speed gearbox and final drive. This gearbox can be left in "auto" mode for around town driving - where it's a bit clunky at times - but the manual paddle mode generates shifts that take just 0.2 second. Downshifts are accompanied by a rev-matching blip of the throttle.
The ATTESA ET-S AWD system can transfer up to 50 per cent of power to the front wheels and works with the dynamics control systems to promote overall stability. Nissan sourced the brakes from Brembo and they do an amazing job of dragging its hefty 1740 kg to a stop. Front suspension is by double wishbones with a rear multi-link system. Shocks are electronically-controlled Bilstein DampTronics and tires P255/40ZRF20 front/P285/35ZF20 rear. Steering is electric, with variable power assist that muscles up nicely at speed.
Ready when you are
After all this is bolted together at Nissan's Tochigi plant every GT-R undergoes a carefully scripted 20 minute break-in routine to bed in the suspension, clutch and brakes - by a guy wearing bright red Nismo racing boots.
The finale to his performance is two laps of the 1.6 mile circuit with the throttle pinned and the brakes full on. When the rotors are glowing - it's done.

Q1- January February March April
Q2- May June July August
Q3- September October November December
Quarter = 4.
1st Quarter= 1st 4 months.
It confused me too, just recently got the hang of it (I am pretty sure I got it right, if not, wtf).
I don't know why it took me so long, I just heard "coming Q2" and stuff and just thought "bah, too far away" so never bothered I guess.
Sephiroth_VII
01-11-2008, 01:12 PM
It's a quarter of the year, so 12/4=3. So 3 months per quarter. Which months depends on wheter we're talking fiscal quarter or going by the seasons, but most companies go by the fiscal system, though it seems PD didn't in this case.
Fiscal:
* 1st Quarter: October 1 – December 31
* 2nd Quarter: January 1 – March 31
* 3rd Quarter: April 1 – June 30
* 4th Quarter: July 1 – September 30

Actually, isn't Q1 of the fiscal year from the 1st April - 30th June?
PSXBatou
01-11-2008, 05:51 PM
Fiscal years are typically numbered using a calendar year and quarter thereof. A fiscal quarter is 3 months (1/4 of a year). For example, the United States government fiscal year for 2008 ("FY08", sometimes written "FY07–08") is as follows:
1st Quarter: October 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007
2nd Quarter: January 1, 2008 – March 31, 2008
3rd Quarter: April 1, 2008 – June 30, 2008
4th Quarter: July 1, 2008 – September 30, 2008
That's odd, because over here March 31st is considered the end of the financial year.
PSXBatou

It depends, if it is FISCAL or "non-fiscal" year... Q1 Fiscal is April to June, Q1 non-fiscal is January to March...
And since it was already announced for the US in march, then I guess, Europe won't have to wait either.

I love GT, but I'm not prepared to pay more than half the price of the full game for a 100th of the full game's content. If it was £9.99, or maybe at a push, £15.99, then I'd be inclined to go for it.

dont get me wrong im likeing burnout. i just find it funny that prologe has as much content as the majoritys of GTs "competitors" that will rape you for $60 while prloge is looking to be under 40usd. but... just because its got the GT name on it folk expect the world, and when it falls short...
im just saying if this exact game was produced buy EA as a multiplatform every year as Harddriving 2007 08 09 ect... no one would question its amount of content. even if they charged you 98usd for the 733t version that came in a molded PVC plastic 1/2 scale helmut.
Same as GT4 Prologue then, just as I previously said. I'll be buying it since there's a substantial amount of content and GT makes me spooge.

I guess the European and US version will be online from the get go. It would be nice that they added English or even localised menus in upcoming updates.

Of course they will be online from the beginning.
They already made "Intercontinental" tests on Daytona, i just hope they add the abillity to make own rooms.
Atm its more a server test then anything else.

I just mean that the new version should include the online mode and the other updates built-in. GT5P is still work in progress after all.

Just think of GT5P as a VERY polished beta version of GT5... just like Home Beta
dont get me wrong im likeing burnout. i just find it funny that prologe has as much content as the majoritys of GTs "competitors" that will rape you for $60 while prloge is looking to be under 40usd. but... just because its got the GT name on it folk expect the world, and when it falls short...
im just saying if this exact game was produced buy EA as a multiplatform every year as Harddriving 2007 08 09 ect... no one would question its amount of content. even if they charged you 98usd for the 733t version that came in a molded PVC plastic 1/2 scale helmut.
I was thinking in relative to what you usually get with a GT game. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure GT5P is great, and I hope you guys have fun with it. Personally, I can wait for the full game.

Something tells me that they are just going to add on to the Prologue via digital distribution in order to make it the "complete" game. Not saying there won't be a BD version, but I would be willing to bet that the PSN content would be available sooner than the BD version, plus maybe more up to date.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Priced and Dated
+ Posted by Scott Goryl // Public Relations Specialist
It’s official - SCEA announced today the April 17 North American ship date for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, available exclusively for PS3. Developed by famed Polyphony Digital, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be available for $39.99 on Blu-ray Disc (BD) and as a download via the PLAYSTATION Store.
The BD version will offer added value with an exclusive behind-the-scenes High Definition (HD) video feature called “Beyond the Apex”. This video will offer some awesome access to the folks at Polyphony and give some background on how they are able to create such a realistic and beautiful driving simulator. We’ll have more information on GT5 Prologue leading up to its launch in April, but until then, check out this video:

Yeah well... since Europe always gets the shaft on PSN, we are likely to get shafted again and have to wait at least 2 weeks more and pay at least 40€ (although 40USD are 27€).
I wrote this at the SCEA too, maybe they'll answer me, although SCEE and SCEA are "competitors" somehow (although it makes less than sense to me)

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue hits stores in North America on April 17 for $40, it will also be sold as a digital download for the same price on the Playstation Store. If you buy the disc version it comes packed with an extra behind-the-scenes high-def video called "Beyond the Apex".
The precursor to GTA5 will include 60 vehicles, 16 car online races at 60 frames per second and 1080p HD support. The game also supports online racing events, an in-cockpit view with real-time gauges and human animation and support of the vibration Dualshock controller.
"Ten years following the introduction of Gran Turismo(TM) on PS one(R), Gran Turismo 5 Prologue delivers the most realistic and technologically advanced racing experience on any platform," said Jeff Reese, director, software marketing, SCEA. "With 1080p graphics, revolutionary online features like Gran Turismo(TM) TV and the new in-cockpit racing view, the world'sbest-selling racing franchise will once again set the standard for racing games."
The game will launch with Gran Turismo TV, a dedicated online channel on the Playstation Network that will include worldwide motorsport programming.
Is it just me or is everyone else getting confused with all of these demos and prologues? I'm not sure if this is the best way to roll out a triple-A title. Hit the jump for the official fact sheet and a batch of new screens.

Hmm
The press release states
• Race more than 60 high-performance and exhaustively detailed cars, including vehicles from Ferrari, Audi, Nissan and Mitsubishi.
MORE than 60 cars... Well, it could be 61, but still one more than Kotaku said there would be^^

Hrm, this might be interesting, if the disk and digital download are priced the same, then i want to see how this translates to europe.
generally there's a good price conversion from us
(warhawk was $40 and 20 pounds)
so, will GT5P be 20pounds for both disk and digital, or more for one.. ore something totally random from there
Segitz

Yeah, same here...
Warhawk was 30€ on PSN, which I found to be a great price. Hopefully, they don't fork us over with GT5P (which they surely will^^ I know Sony as well as you do!)

Hmmn, so it's priced finally; a demo for $40 bucks. I'm sure that it's nice to have 60 cars, but is there anything yet on actual improved GAMEPLAY features of significant value?
So far this is still smelling like GT4 w/ a cockpit view, tacked on online mode (is it even out of the box?) and a video channel. Hardly revolutionary in any sense of the word, really.
Honestly, is this as good as it gets?
