As long as the price doesn't change Sony can keep on increasing the built-in HDD size and not many people will notice.

Maybe when they start making PS3 profitable but not enough to make a price cut, they will ship them with bigger HDDs.

Im fine with my 20 gig model. I can still remote my psp to it, so its all good.

Eventuyally, Ill put in my own hdd anyway. I could care less about console revisions.

What do you mean by that?

Seems kind of silly, unless it's Korea only. I know Sony said they are releasing different flavors for different countries. I guess this is what they mean.

Not silly if they simply replace the 60GB with the 80GB (since older smaller hard drives actually get more expensive because they aren't mass produced as much). So, it wouldn't cost sony much if any more to just phase out the 60GB and replace it totally with the 80 at the same price (or even couple that with a price cut).

Do tell, how does one with the 20gig model do such a thing? Because that would be pretty sweet.

Seems kind of silly, unless it's Korea only.starting IPTV in Korea makes a lot of sense- if this is true. but there is nothing silly about replacing the standard HDD with a bigger one.

understatement......lol

I think thats where companies practice future services for various products....... and I think that is what Sony is doing with this IPTV thing for over there.......

Korea has had the pleasure of having high speed mobile streaming media for a while now.......

you think the US has fast broadband? lol
in any case, Korea puts to shame the entire world. even Japan, while being leaps and bounds from other countries, are still no match for the high-speed internet capital of the world. prices to speeds ratio always get me very depressed. I wish I lived there...

And yet, most of Germany is even SLOWER than the US^^

I live near Stuttgart (and a 150m from the Porsche development center with test track Weissach) and yet, the most I get is 3mbits! (theres NOTHING else available yet)

true, but just to be clear; I wasn't talking about penetration at all. I was talking about access speeds and pricings.

not to surprising to have such a penetration of anything with a population of just over 300k.

I remember reading that South Korea was aiming to wire the whole country with 100 Mbps cable by 2008. That has the potential to put to shame almost everyone.

Year-end price drop AND upgrade confirmed? =-o

well...the facts said ..sony already did Price drops..

PS3 60 in(PS2 EE+GS) US =$599
PS3 20GB (EE+GS) in japan = $420
PS3 60GB in Japan (PS2 EE+GS) = $530
PS3 80 GB in S.Korea (PS2 GS) =$550

so...PS3 price in US and EU is very likely to drop at ANYTIME sony want , 100$ cut is easy here cuz they already kinda did it in asia ...

here what i think..

removing the EE+GS and the 60GBHDD ( costs more than 80GBHDD) plus the 20GBsku in EU and US then shift to only the new 80SKU without EE+GS plus using 65nm chips that will make a $400- PS3 is very possible this year..

I think it had mostly to do with price like the other poster said....but also I believe they did not want to rub the other PS3 users the wrong way...... Its a little extra coating for Korea and to push their IPTV plan.......

imagine if it was 120gig........some PS3 owners would take it personal while trolls/viral marketers would be foaming in the mouth.....

I know but they are directly related and I am 99% sure the speed ranking is the same or very close. I didn't find a chart for speed so I went with the next best thing.

Isnt it better for sony to cut the price instead releasing a higher model?

It looks like PSP strategy all over again.

Its not really a higher model its only a revision to their current Sku by upping the hdd capacity. No other difference and no price difference either (as suggested a larger hdd doesnt necessarily conclude to increase in cost).

This fall is going to tell the tale for PS3 price drop (IMO). I can see Sony either riding into the fall at their current price and playing to their library for sales or dropping price and using the library to further push the PS3. A price cut could stop potential growth of console rivals if incorporated around the time of their large name exclusives. Depending on their financial stance and market penetration at the time both scenarios are possible.

it's not a new SKU Crum, it's just got a bigger HD. i think this is a good move by Sony. build up interest in something that someone else owns and then at some point offer it to everyone. one thing this does indicate to me is that the 20gb version is going pretty soon.

You guys have no idea how lucky you are with the internet speeds you get...

Around here the fastest you can get anywhere in the country is 2mb, and, get this, it goes for about $3000 a year at its cheapest. (actually, the competing company sells the 2mb service for about $10,000
. lol :P)
Other than that, you can get 1mb for about $1500, or 512 for about $800 a year, which is what I have.

A 120 GB HDD might end up becoming cheaper to manufacture because of higher worldwide demand throughout PS3's life. Sony will just include the cheaper drive, and it happens that a bigger one might be cheaper than a smaller one.

Its not really a higher model its only a revision to their current Sku by upping the hdd capacity. No other difference and no price difference either (as suggested a larger hdd doesnt necessarily conclude to increase in cost).
It's often easy to forget that Microsoft did the same with the Xbox hard drive and upped it from 8 GB to 10 GB (even though the latter was formatted to 8 GB). And the situation is the same -- hard drives have a lower limit on cost of production and an 80 GB hard drive costs the same to make as a 60 GB these days because the internals are the same -- still one platter, two heads. A 20 GB drive is also largely a waste of resources for a hard drive manufacturer because they can't sell them anymore and they can get better use out of the same parts by making 60+ GB drives -- It's more economical for them to drop production of drives that small after a point (which has long since passed for most all manufacturers).
