There should be some kind of piece of hardware that lets us play PSP games on the PS3, like the GameBoy player for the GCN. I'm dying to play Portable Ops but I don't want to get a PSP...

I think the idea is kind of silly of playing UMDs on the PS3 just because like it doesn't make sense to me for Sony to even dream of doing that lol...
But ya! I'd rather have those games on the PS3... MGS PO and Crisis Core and Dissidia! DAMN YOU SONY! I don't want to buy a PSP you !@#*$!*@#!($#)@()(!!@##$*(&@!(#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to buy a PS3 and let that be the end of it! Why don't you understand!!!

Maybe they could release a PS3 version on PSN with 1080P support AA the whole shebang -after the PSP release dies down.

^That's a possibility, but I think they might choose to take advantage of that even later like with the PS4. I wish they would do it with the PS3 though....

You don't want to watch umds on a standard tv set. The resolution is 480 x 272. They would look like utter crap.

Actually I think they are encoded in 720 * 480 the same as DVD.
I personally think that this would be a great idea as I own a PSP.
Just plug the PSP into the PS3 via the USB and the PS3 can play any UMD media in the PSP.

You don't want to see PSP games blown up to an actual T.V. size. Just trust me on this.

Seriously, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is the reason why you will feel you need to buy a PSP. The system just got a price cut and there's even a Ratchet & Clank pack, so do it now!

Why don't you just follow my example and buy this (http://gear.ign.com/articles/666/666034p1.html)?

thats alotta rendering lol Not really. PSP software resolution is 480×272 but it shouldn't be a problem for the PS3 to render the game at an appropriate resolution (including 1080p).
I too, would love to play my PSP games upscaled on the PS3 even though I'll be picking up the hand held once the redesigned version appears. ^_^

I agree. I own a PSP and I have never wanted to watch a UMD through my PS3.

As much as I like Game Boy Player, it makes games look like junk. And while PSP is obviously much nicer graphically than GBA, PSP on the big screen really wrecks the quality.
That said, I agree. If there were some player like Game Boy Player for UMDs on PS3, that'd be very tempting regardless of the niceness of the graphics.

YOU GUYS NEED TO UNDERSTAND.
PSP's graphics were made for small tiny screen, which is why the sweet looking games look so sweet (cuz there are some shitty ones lol). If you take that image and stretch it over an HD monitor it's gonna look more like a PSone game than a PSP game. Don't you understand? This is why the PSone games, Crash Bandicoot for example look sweet on your PSP, and shitty on your PS3 and bigass HD set with it's resolutions that are 2,3,4 or 5 times the resolution the original video game was drawn in.. This is one of the things that makes this gen's art assets such a pain in the ass, because you can't hide as many flaws with the hype and demand for >720p resolutions.
If you want to play PSP games so badly, you should just save up for one. PSP+MGS:PO+some decent headphones is like 250 bucks. You can make that in a month or less (not sure if you gotta pay a lot of bills or not, so just guesstimating.)
HD EXPOSES YOUR GRAPHICS FOR WHAT THEY TRULY ARRRREE!!!!!
Besides, it doesn't make ANY business sense for them to completely make one of their systems totally worthless by making an add-on for the other. There's plenty of reasons for that as well.

I'm not really interested in playing my PSP games on PS3. I just use my PSP for that. What I would like to do is use it to play my UMDs. These are encoded at 720*480 anamorphic so they are exactly the same as DVD quality. Why anyone with a UMD film would not want to use the PSP as a transport and the PS3 as the decoder/upscaler to 1080P is beyond me. It would mean that I would not have to buy DVDs anymore. I could just buy UMDs and Blu-ray.
A win/win situation for Sony and maybe breath some life back into UMDS.

I don't know where you're getting this they're encoded at 720 x 480 stuff. The umd media is simply not capable of supporting this type of resolution. UMD has a 1.8gig capacity. Compare that to a dvd and its very clear that to fit 720 x 480 onto a umd would result in a bitrate so low, you might as well not bother.
On top of that, most psp movies aren't even done in their proper widescreen ratio. And these movies only offer the most rudimentary sound options. Forget about DD5.1.

Have you played Syphon Filter or FF IX or others from the PS1 on your computer?
You do get the low res textures, but that's expected out of a PS1 game. I am comfortable with it because I know PS1 games are PS1 games, they don't have the textures of effects of PS2 games or onwards.
But seriously, Gran Turismo, Syphon Filter, Crash Bandicoot, etc etc, for PS1 games they look so hawt in HD. And FF IX character models? Ohh.... myyyy... godd..... they actually translate ridonkulously well to HD, it's actually amazing.

I agree with rotorhead's post that this option could breathe some much needed life back into UMDs but I still would not go out of my way to watch UMDs through my PS3.
Just get a PSP its well worth it, I have bought three so far, including a refurbished one from Sony.
Portable Ops is a good game too, still play online on a regular basis.

I don't want to watch a UMD especially when the movie suite is totally unappealing, imo. Instead I want to enjoy PSP games on the big screen, just like CurryKing. Upscaling, anisotropic filtering, anti-aliasing and what-not would give us appropriate visuals.
Hell, I'd play the PSP games on PC (once ripped) and then feed it to an HDTV just so I can play my game on the big screen. I can use the PSP itself outside of my home, which is where I am, almost always.
