PS3 Gets More Gigs in Korea
Sony launches with 80 gig model, 15 games.
by Anoop Gantayat

US, May 21, 2007 - Sony Korea announced today final details on the upcoming PS3 launch in South Korea. The system will be available in one package on 6/16, at a price of 518,000 won ($554).

Catching our attention more than the date and price, however, was the configuration of the system. The Korean model PS3 will ship with a 80 gig hard disk as standard. This is 20 gigs higher than the current high end system that's available in Europe, North America and Japan.

The kimchee isn't all fresh, though. Sony confirmed that the Korean model PS3 will be based on the new chipset that launched with European version of the system. That means no Emotion Engine, and presumably shakier backwards compatibility when compared to the US and Japan, whose systems still include the PS2 chipset in full.

As it did in Europe recently, Sony is giving the PS3 a big launch lineup for the Korean launch. Early adopters will be able to chose from 15 titles: Ridge Racer 7, Resistance, Genji, Motorstorm, Virtua fighter 5, Armored Core 4, Untold Legends Dark Kingdom, Blazing Angels, Gundam: Target in Sight, The Godfather, Def Jam Icon, Need for Speed Carbon, Fight Night, Call of Duty 3, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. These games are already available in other territories.

Sony will also have PlayStation Store content available from day one. Currently, videos of Lair and Warhawk are confirmed for launch day, along with a playable demo of Resistance. Games like Blast Factor, flOw, Super Rub a Dub are listed by the publisher as TBA.

Details on a possible launch in nearby North Korean were not announced today.

New model due to arrive next month

New information on the website for Sony Computer Entertainment Korea suggests that an 80GB version of PlayStation 3 will be arriving in the territory next month.

According to the site, the 80GB model will bear a pre-tax price tag of KRW 518,000 (USD 557 / EUR 412 / GBP 232) and will hit the shops on June 16.

There is no word on when or indeed whether the 80GB PS3 will go on sale in other regions. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

In March, following an FCC filing by Sony which referred to an 80GB version, SCEE said there were no current plans to introduce such a model.

However, Sony spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka last month hinted that larger hard drive-enabled PS3s would be available in the future, stating, "Even 60GB may not be big enough eventually."
