May 22, 2007 - Today JoWood let the world know they're in the process of "promising negotiations" with a new developer for Gothic 4. The long-running action RPG series' development had previously been handled by Pluto 13, also known as Pirahna Bytes, a company apparently now left out in the cold. There was no mention as to who the prospective new developers could be, so there's no real release window for this one yet. For now, Gothic 4 is planned as a console and PC project, a shift from the series' previous PC exclusivity.

For those unfamiliar, the Gothic series has always been about free-roaming, open-ended gameplay. As the Nameless Hero, players were free to dynamically alter the world, allying with factions and destroying enemies as they pleased. Unfortunately, the series has always been plagued by some serious bugs, particularly the third release. We're hopeful the fourth installment proves to be more stable.

As stated above, I am not familiar with this game, although the open-ended free roaming concept makes me want to at least give it a look.

I love Gothic, 1 & 2 are awesome, 3 was a big dissapointment (Bugthic).
But if they can make a game with the gameplay from 3 without bugs and with graphics that are Oblivion worthy its a must byu for me!

Gothic 3 was at its core a good title just suffered from to many issues/bugs. The Gothic series has always been in league with the Elder Scroll series as the best W. Rpgs available (only beaten by the now infamous Fallout series).

The thought of Gothic 4 coming to the PS3 is a definite buying incentive for anyone interested in the genre.

PS - I dont consider KOTOR or BG (pc) series to be western rpgs (IMO). LOL

Ah, I knew I'd find you here wounding.. bwahahahh!

Ok anyways lol... Sounds good. I heard the same thing about Gothic 3, very buggy. It looked so freaking cool in gameplay vids though, I really wished they polished it up more because I was very frustrated trying to play it.

Hm, I only ever played Gothic 2 (back on my old, then new, rig with a 9800pro bios modded to xt). Man that game was hard (or I was just bad). But anyways, I didnt like the controls...

I dont know, if it is good or bad, that they left Piranha Bytes. I thought they were not the ones responsible for the bugs (JoWood was nearly bankrupt and needed to release G3 to make money quick). They created the Gothic world.

But parting ways can always spur new ideas. Maybe PB gets a new more potent publisher and releases the "true" inofficial sequel to Gothic 2 called "High middle Ages" or "Crusaders of Europe" (I love the "Crusaders" term... I dunno why, maybe because when I was a child, I loved the Indy3 amiga adventure game^^)
