Eset is the best one out there right now. It actually beat Norton Anti Virus. I was surprised. I'm not sure if I will get this next time instead of renewing my Symantec?

Proof is here! So is this real?

I'll stick with Norton. It's a name I can trust and rely upon.

Thats what I have been doing as well. I think I would get Eset if I got another computer though. Just because it is cheaper to renew now.

Norton is still number one, dispite one loss. They are almost always up-to-date and include a swiss army knife of features.
For those of you whom need virus software and do not wish to spend money, AVG anti-virus software by grisoft is the best free version, and can be updated indefedinatly as new virus definitions come out.
There homepage is here: Get the free 6.0 version if you need it anyone.

Horror, did he have the free version or retail version of AVG? I have never heard of such a problem with that perticuar software. In fact, my entire school relies on AVG and we have not had a problem at all with it. I still reccomend it as a free anti-virus tool.

^Your entire school uses free anti virus protection? Well atleast your school must have Windows.

Our school has both MAC and Windows based computers. Keep in mind, my highschool only has 400 students total.

Thats a small high school then. I live in a town and we have over 500 students and the towns population is 1200. We pretty much have only Macs when it comes to doing anything on the computer. Our typing class has to use shitty Windows 98 though. I don't even think the server has anti virus becuase it was shut down for a week because they thought there was a virus? Oh well, my school sucks ass.

Trend Micro PC-Cillin.
When I switched over it caught viruses and trojans on my work computers that norton did not. It also comes with an intergrated firewall for further protection, spam filter to filter junk mail, and even a program to filter out the nasty spyware that programs like addaware don't reconize. (plus if you do the free scan just to test your computer *it won't quarenteed most files until you buy it however*) Fill out the stupid quiz, and you can then download it 20% of. That's all that for 39.99.

I always found the best protection from a virus is quite simple, just never take it online. ;)

I have a router and update windows whenever they have one available, and haven't ever gotten thing. Also, using Mac OS or Linux might do the trick

^Ussually routers don't stop viruses? They stop intrusions.
I have never heard of that virus program Nights. I know adaware is pretty bad in ways. I downloaded the trial version of Spy Sweeper and got things adaware diden't.
My friend who has had the internet for a month downloaded the trial (spy sweeper) and he scanned and had to stop 2 minutes in or his computer would freeze, he got 3040!!! He only scanned a small part of the computer as well. It took him like 15 minutes to remove it all!!! I left before he started scanning again.

I hate recommending Spy Sweeper to newbies, considering they can ruin there computer if they don't know what there doing.
Instance, some HP things come up in the system registry as problems. If they are removed you can cause serious flaws with your computer. Plus PC-cillin combined with Addaware gets rid of all the real problems that spy sweeper would find while not showing you the things that are potential problems that can be necessary for your system.
PC-cillin has been rated the number one security program by majority of computer magazines, I would sugest seriously checking it out.

(It's spam filter alone is wonders) which is intergrated and comes with the number one virus detector available.

Really? I feel dumb for buying Norton and disabling PC-Cillin. I sure am glad I never found out how to uninstall it.

nukeblaze, it was a free 30 day trial for the new version of avg. this is what he said.
"The program is average for detecting viruses. But wait until you uninstall it! It eliminated a Core Driver needed to bootup as a result of normal uninstallation! AVG won't talk about it but do a Google search (AVG Virus + Core driver not found) and you will see! If you are lucky, that will be the only problem. It caused all sorts of internal damage to mine and has ruined many people's computers* (*read any forums on this subject). It took me over 2 weeks and 100 hours to fix mine with the help of paid technicians who eventually had to take the harddrive out and put it in the new computer I had to buy to recover files I needed off the hard drive!! The "free" download is only for 30 days. Most people will not uninstall until then, which means they have to PURCHASE it for ($30-$40) if this happens to them since the only way that MAY fix it is installing a higher version! And it still is problematic because the computer will only start up in safe mode, even after loading boot up disks (floppy-A:drive is only thing that will work in safe mode and any AVG program is too big for floppy) and bypassing windows. CD roms and Internet connections don't work in safe mode. So you may pay $30-$40 for nothing! Don't EVER install this program. WORSE THAN ANYTHING MOST VIRUSES WILL DO!!! Also note: When I tried to give a negative review, it said I had to register first. (Programs can be downloaded w/o registering.)And still I had to register and confirm multiple times before it accepted my registration! Companies know consumers are reluctant to give the personal information (email, address, phone, etc) required to register when they are giving a negative review. Particularly to a software company that knows viruses. But it will be worth the effort if I can prevent even one person from what I went through or even worse. Good luck!! "

First off, you are not supposed to download the trial version of AVG 7.0, you are supposed to download the free 6.0 version. FRom what I have read, there is a glitch with the 6.0 software and running windowXP and running outlook express. Some of the windows files are incompatable with the 6.0 version, hence giving this error message.
As far as the program forcing a purchase, I have not found anything on it. I have used 7.0 on a WinXP system and uninstalled it, I did not have a problem. As anything, it would seem that just like any peice of software, it all depends on the combination of software, hardware, and your computer using habibts which determine the final actions of software. It is unknown weither AVG has fix the problem with the 6.0 version. I will continue looking.

If you want to compare user ratings with Norton and Pc-cillin here you go.
Pc-cillin
User recommendation:
83% Recommend,
17% Don't Recommend
(from 128 users)
Norton
User recommendation:
28% Recommend,
72% Don't Recommend
(from 145 users)
Read user comments | Write your own review
Reasons why Pc-cillin was recommended highter
1 Catches more viruses/Trojans
2 Doesn't tax system nearly as much as it's competitors
3 Catches harmful registry files and spyware of that sort (what addaware doesn't catch on it's own)
4 Spam filtering
5 Good firewall
These game from Cnet. I always go by peoples opinions, since they aren't jaded in anyway particular way.
I would also like to point out that both Norton and Pc-cillin are reported to catch 99.9 percent of everything during the last major tests.
Zipped files are different. Pc-cillin finds 72.5 percent of harmful things withing zipfiles and archives compared to Nortons 53.2.
It is also rated best security program in PC Mag and PC Gamind which are the only mags I get regarding pc's. (Again for work)
