I run Ubuntu, but I'm planning on getting my sister a new desktop. I want to just give here a Linux setup but it maybe too complicated for her, and the biggest problem, she needs MS word documents and such.

Is there no way of saving MS stuff in Open office?

Also for me, on my XP system I would always mess around with the videos I had on my PC and put music to them with the Windows Movie Maker. Is there a substitute for this app for Linux? I don't mean a complicated terminal based one either guys:nono:

Anyway, tks in advance...:cheers:

That's just about my last two gripes with everything involving Ubuntu. I know many people run it as a second OS, but honestly, I'll probably never buy another Windows desktop again. It's practically flawless. I just wish the application installs were easier and more things are included in the initial boot up for people who are even less tech-savvy than me...

File-> Save As -> Office Xp/2003(doc)

Once you define the file type of the document, every time you hit regular save it will keep and same formating.

Open office 2.x can save an open in the MS format just fine.

I believe Virtualdub has a Linux variant for Video editing. There are others that would know better than I which apps are better for Linux video editing.

This may be helpful in finding Linux applications. I don't see a video editing section, but found a couple good apps from here. It's written for Gentoo, but hey, it's all Linux.

Omni, open office can easily save and open any ms word file, it's compatibility has always been flawless for me. (school requires everything be 100% MS!)

there are THOUSANDS of video editors for linux, if you type "video editor" or something similar in synaptic you should get a few options.
