I work at an EB Games store in my local mall. It's like the third store in from one of the side entrances. I was working last night, it was about 6-6:30. I was behind the counter maybe 15 feet inside the store.
All of a sudden, I hear an almighty crash, look out the gate, and see people running like mad. Then this gold Honda cruises past my store, going I'd say about 35 to 40 mph. I'm not gonna lie, I was scared shitless. My first reaction was, "I want to stay the fuck away from the door, there are probably people lying hurt all over the place." Not the most noble thing to think maybe but I really didn't want to see heaps of dead or injured people all over, and it was pretty damn scary.
I ran over to my gate to shut it, while my customers ran out through the fire escape in the back. I made some quick phone calls, and after a minute, my buddy came around from the other GameStop in the mall. The car was out of the mall, so we went out to look around, and it was a fucking mess.
I'll try to describe the mall as best I can. The maniac drove in through glass doors, ripping the twisted frames out of the wall and ceiling. He then drove down my corridor, missing all of the little booths and kiosks in the center, until he got the the middle area of the mall. This is a large circular place with an elevator in the middle, and a few other small booths (he hit one of these). There were tire tracks swerving left when I came out to look, and a piece of his car lay on the floor.
He took the left and drove down the main mall hallway, which is far wider than the one through which he came in. He drove all the way down, a good quarter mile I'd say, then made another left at the last side-corridor, parallel to mine. Here he ran into one of those stacker machines and lost the front bumper of his car. It really is nothing short of a miracle that nobody was hurt more than a cut from the shattered glass.
He crashed out through the glass doors at the end of that hallway, drove around the parking lot, and came back for a second lap. At the end of the parking lot, as he approached the mall again, the car died (it looked an absolute wreck), and he got out. He was apparantly very calm and cooperative when and off-duty officer apprehended him. The man responsible will be 20 years old in August.
Today I found out that he is also responsible for several other crimes in the area. Just last week he robbed a woman right outside the mall at gunpoint, and security has been passing around fliers and whatnot. He did the same to a person near a village hall not far from the mall about a year ago. Less than a month ago he lit a car on fire at a different mall, thinking it belonged to his ex's new boyfriend. He apparantly confessed to all of these crimes after being taken in.
I have two pictures of the mall doors on my phone...if I ever figure out how to I'll try to post them here. I heard he caused about $60,000 worth of damage, but all things considered it could have been far worse.
I don't know how to end this thread, so:
