I saw a real R8 last week in Stuttgart... This is HELLUVA car!! If I could afford it, I would get it ASAP.

Sarthe? I would much prefer if they released a version with the Nordschleife (which I am yet to drive myself... But my old car was busted by a deer at ~90mph). I hope, they include the cockpits in this version, just for the jist of it and either (or both :D) AI or online gaming.

Joypad: Where does your passion for cars come from?

Yamauchi: Like every boy, I started getting interested in cars at the age of 3-4 years old.

Years later, when the occasion presented itself to make a video game, I had already prepared 150 projects, Gran Turismo being directly linked to my passion for cars. It may not be the Gran Turismo that we know and love today, but I knew what I wanted: a real driving simulator with real cars.

Joypad: At present day, you’ve vastly explored this idea, what aspects of it inspire you?

Yamauchi: Lots of things! But certainly there is no end to this story. We’ve created a game that evolved from circuits to rallies by passing by some normal roads and today with GT HD, we have introduced to you the drift aspect of the game. But there are still lots of fine tuning and lots of work to do. Nothing is ever really completely finished! But the passion that animates my team is a real engine for itself.

Joypad: You’ve arrived in a Porsche GT3, we’ve also seen a Ford GT… What are the cars you own and which one is your favorite?

Yamauchi: I have six cars. 2 Ford GT, a Porsche GT3 that you’ve seen but also a Mercedes SL55, a Nissan 350z Nizmo and a Honda S2000. My favorite one is definitely the Ford GT, since it goes back to the day I was born.

Joypad: Which car do you dream of owning some day?

Yamauchi: Without a doubt, a McLaren F1. I’ve never been in one, it’s a dream to be able to drive it someday.

Joypad: Where does the name Gran Turismo come from and how did you choose the cars that are in the game?

Yamauchi: Gran Turismo is originally an Italian name. The type of car that lets you “travel” since they are cars of grand tourism. We’ve reintroduced this philosophy in the game, since with Gran Turismo, the player travels inside beautiful cars! A couple of them are reclaimed by the manufacturers, but most of the vehicles in the game are personal choices.

Joypad: How was Polyphony created?

Yamauchi: At first, it was a division called “Team Yamauchi” that was integrated in Sony. In 1998, this division became independent under the name Polyphony Digital.

Joypad: How many people work by your side?

Yamauchi: Today, we are 120 in total. In 1992, when I started making the first Gran Turismo, we were seven and it took us 5 years to finalize the game.

Joypad: You were not programmers though, what’s your professional background?

Yamauchi: I started by studying economics while making games for fun. I was 18, it was a hobby. Since I was a kid, I used to play a very well known PC game called Grand Prix. I then arrived at Sony in the music department of Epic Sony Record, to then migrate to the domain of games.

Joypad: Grand Prix was a single-seater game. Why haven’t you created a soft of Formula 1 instead?

Yamauchi: But I’ve always wanted to! However, the development of those types of games cost too much because there is a huge amount of interest. What is certain is that if I had that chance, I’d do something really different than the things that exist today.

Joypad: Did you ever expect the Gran Turismo series to be such a big success?

Yamauchi: Not at all! The driving games before Gran Turismo were very different. Even if you don’t brake, you can still successfully pass a turn. When the driving sensations of the players reappeared in Gran Turismo, they were a lot more enthusiastic of the fact that when you brake before a turn, you have to position the car and reaccelerate, so it was something new. In fact, I was sure that there were other people who, like me, wished to have this type of sensation. But not this much!

Joypad: Do you know that most of the Europeans discovered that the cars that run in JGTC (Japan Grand Touring Car Championship) (now called Super GT) is all thanks to this game? The Nissan Skyline comes to mind that was never imported over here…

Yamauchi: Yes, and the funny thing is that some of them that have played GT have contacted the teams of Super GT! This series is very interesting and very competitive even if it takes place only in Japan. Never the less, I am happy to have participated in its image through my game.

Joypad: Specifically , have you ever had any collaboration with the Super GT team and do you call real drivers to test Gran Tusimo?

Yamauchi: It happens quite frequently. They come in the studio and I go see the races. For me, it is important to have the opinions of a real driver.

Joypad: What is your favorite car in all of GT and which one is the most polished one technically and graphically in your opinion?

Yamauchi:My favorite goes to the Skyline GTR and the most polished one is, no contest, the Nissan 350Z Nismo of Super GT.

Joypad: Who are the other game creators you admire?

Yamauchi: Hard to say since I never look at other games unless it’s for technical reasons. But if I had to say, the only one that struck my eye was Little Big Planet because the developers have really succeeded in doing something different, something original. Otherwise, I don’t admire anybody in particular… but due to my ignorance.

Joypad: To speak a bit about the future, what online possibilities are we going to see in GT HD Concept?

Yamauchi: First of all, the name is still to be determined. At this moment, I can confirm that there’s going to be a game that’s going to come out between GT4 and GT5, but we do not have a name yet. Regarding the online, it’s a really broad question…

Joypad: Can we hope for any downloadable cars and tracks via the PlayStation Store?

Yamauchi: Nothing is certain yet, but it’ll be possible to get new updates for the cars. You can surely expect to be able to download when new stuff is available.

Joypad: In GT4, one of the new features was the hood driving view, plus the two old classic ones, what can we expect for the next installment?

Yamauchi: In the next Gran Turismo, the hood driving view will return but also a new interior driving view.

Joypad: You signed a deal with Ferrari, will we see all the Ferrari cars in the game? Can we still hope to see more manufacturers such as Porsche or Lamborghini?

Yamauchi: All the series of Ferrari cars will be available, but in regards to Porsche and Lamborghini, until we’ve signed with them, I cannot answer positively.

Joypad: In regards to the tracks, what’s new?

Yamauchi: I’ve got loads of ideas! So expect a number of surprises! However, I can already announce that there are going to be the classic circuits but also new city tracks…

Joypad: A name?

Yamauchi: (laughs) Not yet!

Joypad: In GT HD, we now have the Drift mode. What made you implement this mode, being very popular in Japan and the US, and will this mode be a separate one in the next Gran Turismo?

Yamauchi: I see myself effectively improving the Drift mode even further, because speed is not the only thing necessary for the handling of a car. Plus, online, you will be able to watch other players play this magnificent mode live.

Joypad: Live or after downloading the file which is the case in GTHD?

Yamauchi: Live!

Joypad: This means that it will be also be possible in the other racing modes?

Yamauchi: Exactly. That's what’s going to be fun. You will be able to play and be watched by the internet community in real time and vice-versa.

Joypad: Do you presently observe players race in GT HD?

Yamauchi: Yes of course! I go check out the times and I must say the Europeans are very good. The surprising thing is watching the driving techniques of the players, specifically the top 3. In contrast, I rarely watch Americans play (laughs)…

Joypad: Will there still be licenses in the next GT?

Yamauchi: Definitely, the licenses represent the heart of the game since forever, and they will be even harder and even more enjoyable!

Joypad: There has never been any damage in the cars of GT. Do you think we will ever be able to completely wreck a car?

Yamauchi: That’s a question I get a lot. I’m aware that players would like to push realistic driving to its limits. What I can tell you is that some cars will have damage in the next Gran Turismo. To be more precise, those cars will be racing ones. But what do you personally wish it had?

Joypad: Well for me it’s the opposite!! In my opinion, I think that Gran Turismo is a driving simulation which means if you go off-road, it makes perfect sense for the car to take damage. In addition, it’s very frustrating to see another driver crash on a wall and just keep going as if nothing happened…

Yamauchi: I know, it’s a very delicate detail. We’ve already done the calculations: if a car ever touches the rail at a specific speed, in certain turns, we realized that even if it were a tiny bump, the vehicle would take a great amount of damage that the player is unaware of. This leaves us with two options: or we show you the real consequences of an off-road incident, or we replicate this phenomenon at the risk of not being totally realistic. In my opinion, I’d choose the first solution, but will the players be capable of accepting this?

Joypad: We read on the official site that one or several Gran Turismo games could come out before Gran Turismo 5, is that correct?

Yamauchi: I can confirm that before Gran Turismo 5 comes out, there will be at least one Gran Turismo game.

Joypad: Can we get a release date?

Yamauchi: (thinks) As fast as we can

Joypad: What made GT a huge success was its gameplay. For the first time, we had the feeling of a real simulation. Do you still work at this level?

Yamauchi: Yes, the power of the PS3 allows us to push the realism even further, from the driving aspect of the game to the graphics in general and the car models.

In GT4, the transmissions were very stable. However, in regards to the general stability of the car, it was really difficult to find the right balance because the weights in the front and in the back were independent. In GT HD, the cars react a lot more to the weight transfers…
I assure you that we have fine tuned even more the general settings of the car. But you’re right: the cars that you drive in GT HD are a lot more sensitive to weight transfers. However, I wonder if all this tuning is not too complicated or boring for the players…

Joypad: Since the game will be completely online, why can’t we imagine car customization swapping between players? For example, is it possible that a beginner player could download directly the right set-up from an expert player?

Yamauchi: Right on, it will be possible!

Joypad: In the same concept, the cars had the tendency of under steering a little and even when we change the settings of the car, it would still be very difficult to turn it into an over steering car. Will the new customization option this time let us go from one limit to another?

Yamauchi: Yes, that will be possible!

Joypad: My last question: Are you a satisfied man?

Yamauchi: No, I am never totally satisfied. I still have lots of work ahead of me!

I betting the new GT title launches just before Christmas.

Great interview, Dom.

It sounds like he has a lot of ideas, but he's worried that we wonj't like it, so he's not sure whether they're going to implement it or not. I really hope that he has the courage to implement a totally realistic damage system, with an option to turn it on or off, naturally.

Gran Turismo 5 goes behind the wheel (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/story.php?sid=6172697&part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6172697)
French motorsports show confirms next PS3 installment of Polyphony Digital racing series to introduce in-car viewpoints.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Jun 18, 2007 5:55 pm PT

Late last year, Gran Turismo designer Kazunori Yamauchi told fans that the next installment in his popular driving simulation series would reflect a change in the franchise's core principles and become "a fully realized online car life simulation."

While it might not be on of the "core principles" Yamauchi referred to last year, the designer did confirm one change in store for the next Gran Turismo in a recent Polyphony Digital profile by French motorsports program Turbo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsvUC7dW8EQ). For the first time in a Gran Turismo game, players will be able to select an inside-the-car viewpoint with the steering wheel and dashboard visible.

"To translate the real car into 3D, we use data and assets provided by the car manufacturers, but we also use a scanner that completely digitizes a car," Yamauchi told the show. "Here's a scoop: We're also modeling the dashboards because you can drive from the interior view in the upcoming Gran Turismo 5."

When asked about the Gran Turismo 5 in-car views and recent rumors of downloadable content for Gran Turismo HD for the PlayStation 3, a Sony representative told GameSpot, "We haven't made any recent announcements on the GT franchise." Yes, it's been confirmed already for a couple of months now, but it's nice to see it confirmed yet again by the man himself :)

Yes, it's been confirmed already for a couple of months now, but it's nice to see it confirmed yet again by the man himself :)

But it's not as much a re-confirmation as it's Gamespot quoting a video because they have no real SCE exclusive info (IGN, Eurogamer, GameInformer and 1UP seem to be getting those).

Heck all they got was "no comment".

I can't understand what would be behind the idea of only the race cars getting damage other than PD cutting some corners there, does it really need some type of deals from the manufacturers to get the car smashed up?

New Gran Turismo 5 details
Added on 29/06/2007.

The latest issue of the "Car and Drive" magazine has revealed some new details about Gran Turismo 5 and its development.

First of all, Kazunori Yaumachi, the director of the series, stated that it takes up to 180 days for one man to create a car for Gran Turismo 5, whilst it only took one man one day back in the days of Gran Turismo 1. That essentially confirms that GT5 won't feature 700 cars when the game releases, but more cars will be available for download afterwards.

Which nicely brings us to downloadable content, and according to this magazine, could include improved crash damage and other game updates, such as tracks.

The reason given for why the game won't have car damage as standard for all vehicles is that it would need an updated physics engine, and that some car companies don't want to have their cars crashed in the game.

Furthermore, Yaumachi doesn't want to have unrealistic car damages in his game, so he prefers to release the car damage system when it's "perfect". For the perfect car damage system, each body panel of every car would have to be modeled separately.

Gran Turismo 5 is scheduled for Spring 2008, but it could be pushed back to late 2008 since Sony is willing to give Yaumachi all the time he needs to make the best GT to date.

I'm so glad there not putting car damage in GT5, its sooo over rated and becomes annoying after a few days with any car game. Ther haters and xbots will never shut up about it though, but who cares what they think. Haters will hate, if you aint got no haters then you're not doing well.

in more detail:
Here are some Excerpts from the latest edition of Car and Drive issue magazine in which they give more details about the next GT5 game.

Excerpts :

- They talk about the whole GT series and the some technical differences between them and the latest iteration - GT5.

- They talk about the Polyphony’s studio and how the developers spend their time there. Some have cots with sleeping bags under their desk to take power naps.

- They mentioned that the soonest GT5 would be released would be Spring 2008 but that it could be pushed back because Sony is giving them as much time as they need - Kaunori Yamauchi wants it done right.

- Yamauchi said for GT1, one car was one day’s work for one man, GT3 was one man’s work for 30 days, and GT5 one car is one man’s work for 180 days!

- Yamauchi mentioned to program 700 cars would take at least 5 years so GT5 will obviously have less. Players will be able to download more cars in the future. Mentioned some game upgrades will be supplied and sold online in the future.

- One of the future upgrades may be crash damage. Some reasons given as to why it doesn’t have it yet are that it needs to be done realistically, the physics engine would need to be updated and that some car companies don’t want their cars portrayed with crash damage - even if it’s just virtual.

- Realistic crash damage alone is basically double the work. The way Yamauchi wants it done would mean each body panel of each car would have to be modeled separately - intact and crumpled - with the resulting changes in light and shadow.

- “Yamauchi never intended GT to appeal to a mass audience. He believed only a real otaku, or hobby fanatic, would take the time to explore it’s many nooks and crannies. Indeed, the first version was altered for the US market to make it more accessible.” The game was tweaked by Taku Imasaki for American buyers by speeding up the game by 25%, changed the gravity so cars flew longer, and added the instant-play option. Imasaki’s changes didn’t win him many friends at Polyphony.

And that is why Yamauchi is the man. If they're gonna do anything, they're gonna do it right. Period. No half-stepping.

GT5 is shaping up to be a disappointment, and I'm a huge GT fanboy, but what the fuck is this news? When the PS3 was announced and Polyphony discussed what they were going to do with nextgen it was awe inspiring. Photo-realism, more cars, damage models, more realistic physics, and modeled interiors would improve on GT4 in every way and make it the best GT to date.

Now this news comes out. MAYBE 300 cars, no crash damage, same old physics engine. Best part? They're going to add things to the game over time by pimping online content! How about you release a full game, and start working on GT6 once you're done with it, only stopping to fix game breaking flaws with 5?

I can see a lack of crash damage being tolerable if (and when) the game looks exponentially better than Forza, but they have to stop relying on the "car manufacturers won't let us damage their cars!" when Forza has an arguably better manufacturer lineup and damage to their models. Not having Porsche looks really bad for Sony, but getting Ferrari was a good step up.

GT is also outdone in the physics department by GTR and Forza. They have more realistic lap times for the various cars and better physics. In GT5 I don't want to hit a wall and have my car be glued to the road like in previous entries in the series; and I want to run lap times that are more realistic.

Many people think the GT series has been surpassed by Forza with its customization of cars, online play, damage models, and better physics. Sony needs to step up with the latest iteration or they're going to be left behind, and I don't think that remaking GT3 with better graphics and online play is going to do it.

so does this mean crash damage for some models, just not all?

i don't mind if it takes a while to be implemented, or if it isn't there for every car - as long as its there for some, and it looks and feels as good as it's described - damage for each panel....

who cares? there are so many games that offer crashing, its pointless to chase the idea in the greatest racing game made. why, after all, just to say, and we do that too.

someone suggested they can do crash damage on certain modes with certain cars. but nothing official. the man says they might make damage as an add-on downloadable. in any case, GT5 won't release till FF13 is out and both will be late. end of 08 is the earliest, so wait and see.

I remember reading somewhere that only the race cars will be able to recieve damage. Normal road cars will not. Personally, i could live with that.

If you want FAKE looking car damage so much, go play Forza and Burn Out 5.
