How to get your game on: With Girls

So you want to get your girlfriend into gaming, but she just isn't having fun when you're annihilating her in head-to-head Halo. Well guys, it's because you're doing it all wrong (and letting her win is not the answer!).


We girls may be competitive, but not in the way that you think. We want to win, sure, but it doesn't have to be a solo effort. How about a game where both of you can win... together? Solve a puzzle together. Level up together. Work through a story as a team. Co-op games are the secret weapons you can use to win over your girlfriend.


You may worry about possibly leveling up faster than she can, but do not fear -- many co-op games (like Champions of Norrath or Phantasy Star) allow you to collect money and offer you a store in which to buy better items for your character. Since your girlfriend is a female, chances are she likes to shop and receive gifts. If you are leveling up faster and collecting more money, how about buying her character some new armor with health boosters or maybe a new weapon with fire damage? The whole co-op thing sounds nice and all, but it doesn't help if the two of you aren't interested in the same games.

I play PSO with my girlfriend every now-and-then, but it gets to be a pain. Why? She just complains about how I have cooler stuff than she does. I got her a number of hidden items and some hidden mags. But that just isn't enough for her. BLAH!
So instead of doing co-op (since it seems to turn into a competition for her), we just tag-team single player modes. We've been doing that for Oblivion as of late. She'll play through the game, since she's got the basics down, but when it comes to certain things (say, fighting ghosts), then I'm handed the controller. I also give her clues and hints as to what to do when she's in missions. We do that for just about every game she plays and it usually works...until she gets upset, claiming I'm better at every video game she likes.

Indeed. If she wasn't a gamer, she probably wouldn't even care. Then again, I'm a gamer and I don't care if I'm better than her or if anyone else is better than me. They're just games. Some encourage competition, but you can't be competitive in, say, Zelda.
Blah, I just remember one time we got into a dispute while playing Final Fantasy VII together. We were going to choose different names for everyone (and I got to name the "crappy" characters). Well, I wanted to name Aerith "Megatron" and that lead us to just stop playing the game.

I think it's pretty obvious to anyone that working as a team helps build a relationship, and I think if someone couldn't figure out the co-op multiplayer was a good way to bond, then they shouldn't be trying to date anyone in the first place because they're clueless.

I think that might be the worst thing I have ever read. If someone really likes you they will want you to share your hobbies and passions with them no matter what they are. There are no specific games you should be playing, long as both of you are having fun and enjoying each others company, thats all that really matters. When I play games with girls we always end up goofing off and just mess around.

Go on a virtual shopping spree? P-lease. Can we get anymore superficial?

Hey, you're right on though. Dont keep your true feelings hidden for the sake of guys wanting to envision girl gamers wearing little to nothing for their own pleasure. Most guys think girl gamers are hideous because only nerds (which apparently are always hideous) are true gamers. So if a girl plays without her boyfriend, she must be insanely disgusting.

However, i have found that alot of girl gamers are quite normal. They just happen to indulge in the same things that most guys do. Except, instead of always playing madden they might play something different, like WOW, GTA, or a Nintendo game.

Im not gunna call her a whore, as some women dress like that and DONT sleep around. However, she certainly doesnt seem to mind helping people make judgments on her based on her choice of attire for pictures which she KNOWS will be all over the internet.
