OK, so I haven't had any major issues with Ubuntu after the last version released. But from time to time there's little irritating bugs...
Like freezes and stuff-which usually only happens when I leave my computer running for weeks at a time.
but this one problem I'm having is with a panel on my desktop...See link.
http://forums.e-mpire.com/showthread.php?t=72901&page=3 When I try to add a new icon, it completely freezes? It also happens when I'm trying to change the desktop background...
So two questions, how do you fix these little problems without doing a whole system re-install?
What's the cause of the in them first place?
OK...update-EVERYTHING is freakin' freezing....web browsing crashing...wtf:huh: Like seriously is there like some reboot/system check command in the terminal or something?
Teh Roxor!

I would love to help you, but if I remember correctly you're a Gnome user. I know nothing about Gnome.
And at this point, I begin to wonder why I posted in the first place.

hmmm...i have to go to school right now but i will be back soon, are you running beryl at the same time as doing this stuff? have a go without running beryl and see, it can be unstable at times.

Nah, no beryl, I haven't installed beryl, all the eye candy I have is Gdesklets and the pre-installed compiz...
Well shit, everything's bombed to hell now:realmad
I don't understand why this thing becomes unstable at any given moment, is it because Linux sucks on Dell PC's or what:huh:
There should be like 5 Linux distros that get all the attention--Dammit-I'm not doing another re-install:rant:
Stupid Apple, why the hell are the mac so much freakin' money?

ok, i'm thinking it may have been a kernel update gone wrong, when you boot up your system, select another entry of ubuntu, one that is on an older kernel.
if that doesn't fix it go to system -> prefs and disable your desktop effects.
Macs are expensive because they are so proprietary, built upon a derivative of the BSD micro kernel (BSD is unix based, similar to linux).

I dunno man:huh: I turned off the desktop effects but it was still acting up...Then I just turned it off for the night, came to it this afternoon and it's OK??:duh: What the hell is up with this thing?? I didn't see anything in the last update that looked like it fixed something:shrug:
Linux is soooo strange...

haha, linux is strange, it moves in mysterious ways. Ironically, my system has been more stable then ever in the last week or so, with compiz fusion installed.
I don't know how else to help you, these crashes seem totally random and i don't think they are the fault of a single package, (but maybe the kernel, remember to try an older one of the GRUB menu when you start your computer). I suggest just wait and see approach.

I actually want to learn about the ins and outs of OS's, networking etc...come to think of it, I could paid for that right??!!!
I want to be able to fix my own small quirks and bugs

LOL, yes, the best way to learn it is to fix your own small quirks and bugs. That's how i did it. (and still am...) the beginners section of ubuntu forums may be able to help, or you may be able to send off some bug reports to launchpad.
