Do 5400rpm drives do well in the PS3?
That's kind of slow compared to todays harddrives. Damn, I wish they made 10,000 rpm notebook drives, but I guess the recent advancements in solid state storage are gonna make that possiblity highly unlikely. I believe there are 200 and 250GB solid state drives in development (if not in the market already). I wonder if they will ever get efficient pricing though?
You can get 200GB 7200rpm 2.5" drive, but it will cost you a pretty penny.

I dont think, the RPM matter much. My laptop has a 5400 RPM hdd and my external one (also 2.5'') does 7200 RPM. Internally, both do about the same (less than 10% difference, only the seek times are noticeably slower).
There were tests done with different HDDs in the PS3 via linux. The results were nothing major. There were differences between 4200 and 5400, but the difference between 5400 and 7200 was minute.

^ The conclusion of the tests was that the CACHE mattered a lot, and the RPM almost not.

An external HDD is limited by the USB cable, so that's not a fair comparison.

Thats why I tested them INTERNALLY, thats also what I said^^ I am a linux guy, I love playing around with hardware (esp since my external HDD enclosure has eSATA^^)
