The format war's weapon of mass destruction has come in the form of the games console, particularly Sony's Playstation 3. It was released in March after months of delay which contributed to the resignation of Sony Computer Entertainment chairman and CEO Ken Kutaragi, dubbed "father of the Playstation". But it contains a Blu-ray DVD player, and so far 5.5m models have been sold worldwide. The Trojan horse of Sony's high-definition campaign, consoles came with a free copy of Casino Royale to underline the fact that it is for more than just playing games.
I said wow if true this is awesome.

I could've sworn that this same number is the shipped one... I think.. I may still swear it is.
No, I did not read the article.
Edit - Ok read the article. I think it's the shipped number anyway.
More importantly, what kind of crackhead thinks this???
Critics argue that the PS3 will do nothing for Blu-ray because it is being bought for gaming. But its arrival triggered the surge in demand for high definition films at Blockbuster, and was key to the rental company's decision to champion the format.

7months in and it's at 5.5m ??
And this is PS3 at it's worst state.
Once it sells the way everyone expects to sell, it will make X360s 10m in a year look laughable at best.

Well this part is just made up. See the rhetorical nonsense of mixing speculation with supposed insider jargon? Quite manipulative.
If the rest of the article is true, it would be just a journalistic accident.

I think that is shipped.
I stopped caring because I'm sick of trying to differentiate corporate Shipped/Sold angles.

Once I see publishers stop bitching about the PS3 install base then I will start to believe the sales numbers... If this is true it's great news, because the PS3 could exceed the 10 million mark before 2008 and we could see more 3rd party love for the machine...

What I find a bit sad about the publishers today is, that they bitch about a small installed base, yet they dont don much against it. What installed base did the PS2 have, when it launched and some months into it?

Blockbuster, and was key to the rental company's decision to champion the format.
I found that part of the quote interesting -- Blockbuster has an exclusivity agreement with the Weinstein company so only they can rent out movies from them, and the Weinstein company (I think) has an exclusivity deal on HD-DVD. Somehow that works itself out to be kinda funny :-p
I kinda gotta agree with Nameless here -- once publishers stop bitching about it I'll believe it, but then again publishers always seem to have something to bitch about regarding PS3 it seems

damn straight it's impressive. it is irrelivant for me whether these numbers are shipped or sold. as long as they are out there. selling that much in a mere 7 months with all the negativity surrounding it like the plague is astonishing. let's hope it spreads like the plague as well. ;)
I think they can seal the 10mil. figure by years end, especially that a lot of major games are coming out this holiday. there are a number of people that are holding their purchase till then. we'll see.
theyre used to having their pie & eating it now
lol
and what about x360 sales ? haven't microsoft always make shipped units as sold ones ?! and what about people who have third x360 because two already died is it counting like 3 xbox sold :) ?
anyway i don't care.

looks like they made a mistake to me.
Look its the telegraph
Its not like they are electronics specialists
This just reminds me of every thread that I've seen recently where if some random person says something in an article everyone wants to say that it confirms that bit of news.
On another note why has that 5.5 million figure been that for so long. It must be more by now. Unless they've been making PS3's by the day and not shipping them. Or they released the PS3 in korea and didn't send any there

5.5. millions shipped? But that's just shipped. Sold - Zero. PS3 is doom. All those 5.5 million units are just sitting on the shelfs. And being the dumb retails that they are, they just keep ordering in more PS3 even if when no one is buying it.
But seriously, of course the PS3 is going to sell around 5 millions. If it ain't going to sell, why would retails order 5.5 million units just to sit on the shelf. If the retails keep ordering more PS3 units, then that means PS3 units are selling like crazy and retails need more PS3s. So in the end, it doesn't matter that it's shipped. Most of those units are going to sell.

Sounds about right. In the U.S theyre at 1.5 million or so, they just announce 1 million sold in Europe, and around 900k in Japan.

Actually, those are old numbers. They've recently launched Korea and I believe Australia and Spain. I'm not sure about Africa yet, but i could be wrong. All I know is, only a few territories are being recognized under some pretty dated numbers. So it could easily be close to 5.5 if not exactly since then.

However, you have a point. The numbers must be closer to 4M than to 3.5M.

Korea was mentioned just not too recently. Although the other launches could have fallen around the same time, they don't factor with Europe's numbers.

It's shipped units as of March 31st, 2007.
Sony:
Shipped - 5.5 million (as of March 31st. I don't know if they've shipped any more since so as not to over supply the channels like MS did last Christmas)
Sold - 3.53 million
MS:
Shipped - 11.2 million
Sold - 10.01 million
Nintendo:
Shipped - 8.6 million
Sold - 8.48 million
MS overshipped last holiday so they could brag about hitting that 10 million unit number but look how much longer it took to actually sell 10 million. ~7 months later.
All figures as of 3 days ago.

Honestly I still can't believe how a system so expensive and with such a small library of games many of which aren't classified as your heavy hitters can sell 3.5 million.

Largely because it's the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market and the two previous Playstation consoles sold over 100 million each.

One has to wonder whether Sony counted on these figures or if they're extremely worried as to how to make PS3 profitable, although I have to say that Sony won't want to lose money with PS3 for too long. The questions are: what's Sony going to do about it? When?

They're an electronics company, one of the worlds largest, might I add. So I wager they can do plenty. Infact, they've already removed the PS2 parts from the console and decreased the diode for Blu-Ray's cost production. It's only a matter a time before they shrink the processor and find a cheaper cooling solution.
But yeah, like I said before, these numbers are dated.

On a global scale it still is. Going to Best buy.com still shows the lowest player as $499.99 so equal to the PS3. if you had to choose a stand alone player or PS3 for the same cost, I know which one I and probably millions of others would get.

The $500 PS3 will run out of stock soon, if it hasn't already. Anyway, there's no point in getting a standalone Blu-ray player now as PS3's playback quality is the best available and all of its other functions are well worth the extra $100.

For the last time Sony SHIPPED 5.5 mil units as of March 31st, its in their financial statement. PS3 sold 3.6 mil to actual customers as of March 31st of this year, by now the PS3 should be at atleast 4mil. ww.

The shipped figures are correct but not sales figures. They just now hit 3.5 million. Not 3 months ago.
what are they going to do with all those excess units when they add rumble?

What part doesn't add up? If you follow quarterly shipment histories you'll note this does happen. Nintendo had a quarter where no GC's were manufactured or shipped in 2003 or 2004. MS only shipped a small number of X360's post Christmas since they overshipped. Sony shipped no PSP's to the US or Europe last quarter and only 10,000 to the US the previous quarter because stock was at a surplus.
What gets shipped and what gets sold can vary a great deal.
thanks Viper for the detailed input and explanations. you are out forum Rain-man. I would send you an abacus as a birthday present. :)
