So we have all heard of the beauty that is compiz, and the uber-cool and more bleeding edge beryl, well now they have combined forces to continue leading the OS market in terms of sexeh-ness! It's time to unleash, the awesome power of.....

COMPIZ-FUSION!

Man oh man does it look good, i installed it today from an alpha install guide i found on the ubuntu forums, i won't link to it as i don't want people to screw around with too much alpha software that may murder their families and rape their dog but it is in the desktop environment section if you are gaim!

It is sugar-sweet. It's like beryl and compiz's sexyness combined into one freakin' cool mixture. Have a look at some vids here:

oh man, the expo plugin (where you zoom out to view a wall of windows with shiny reflections.....oh man that is freaking cool!

It's so good that they merged together now, more devs, more time, and an easier installation method can be created. And now it allows the next version of ubuntu to come with it as default.

Glad to hear they got over themselves and are actually merging the fork back into Compiz.

beryl was better then compiz IMO, (almost) as stable and far better plugins. but the merger makes it all better :)

grrr... the only thing that is annoying me is the stupid compiz standard zoom plugin, it's so much worse then the beryl counterpart, doesn't allow you to pan or use the mouse/keyboard while zoomed. And i miss beryl's 3d windows. But those issues should be resolved when they finish merging the beryl plugins back in.

Yeah, I agree. This zoom sucks. I told them as much on opencompositing.org.

hehe, i might just join up there, i am sure they will eventually use the beryl zoom, it is soooo darn useful for me. I guess when they merge the plugins together they will choose the most useful of them. I'm going to go "encourage" them to GET beryl zoom NOW!

That was awesome...but when is the Linux community gonnna get serious about taking over the desktop?

Even the most die-hard supporters agree that's there's not enough focus on distors.

the Gnome and Kde is extremely popular. Ubuntu just made it onto Dell PC's. What's the freakin' problem? why can't 5 or 6 distors come together and get all the support:huh:

The new Compiz look freakin' amazing? But how long will it take to become stable? When Mac is releasing stuff like Leopard, Linux has to get some type of stability here man...

Even KDE and Gnome do so much more than Windows...

Well, it's difficult, Linux has always had a geeky feel to it, most who have heard or used it are nerds or technical people in some area or another. when you have ms throwing around money at OEM's to only install MS software then you have a problem, it takes many years to undo that damage, now we are just seeing the result of that with the dell deal with ubuntu and all that.

I do agree with you, there are too many distro's, i am all for choice (one of the reasons i started using gnu/linux), but there does become a time where there a literally hundreds of distros all targeting the same niche market, i one day hope for 10 or so mainstream crushingly popular distros simply because it will allow the development resources to be spread around more on the distros themselves and less on packaging and testing and all of that.

Many reasons why, business, target audience, motive etc, but i do hope some do start teaming up.

Actually, compiz is quite stable, it has had a history of being more stable then beryl, and more conservative, simply put, if you want to ensure stability, simply use an older version without the bleeding edge components and you will be rock-stable.

Compiz has a LOT more to offer then anything that leopard or vista has, it's not even in the same league, all three can be made pretty but only compiz has the cube, the wall, the opacity, the burning windows, the water splashy effects etc. Leopards' implementation of a 3d desktop is far behind.

These things are all great, but they aren't really important to me. Composite desktop rendering can do a lot of good, I just think they should be thinking of more ways to improve usability. The Expo plugin is a bit more useful than the cube when it comes to viewing your desktops and moving windows between them quickly. I want more things like Expo!

yeah, they should focus on more productivity enhancements for now then focus more on the sexy-purdy side later on.

And that means getting interactive zoom back in NOW!

I think the result of the FUSION of this two compositing window managers are awesome.. thats what the open source needed, in order to call the attention to those users that likes eye candy effects.. Im just waiting for the open source drivers from AMD-ATI so I can enjoy those effects at its best.
