I'm looking forward to this new trailer!

The folks at 1UP have said that Rockstar Games has REALLY improved the graphics since the first trailer was released. They have been working on their RAGE engine like crazy and the game looks STUNNING.

At least according to an individual at 1UP.

1crap podcast info (http://www.gtagaming.com/index.php):

Garnett Lee: The thing that got me excited while they were showing and talking about it, like not every building has an interior, right?
John Davison: Right, but the ones that do are complete. So it's not like in San Andreas or Vice City where it was basically a box with a hole in it, and you would just go into the area. If you can go into a building, it is the whole building. You can go behind the counter, you can break through the door into the back room [which] has furniture in it, and then you can --

Mark McDonald: Well, and the detail, I was really impressed by it.

John: You can smash the back window.. and anything you can interact with.

Garnett: And there's no loading.

They go on to explain how in the demo, Niko was chased and seamlessly entered a building and ran up through the fire escape.

On unique detail:

John: The amount of art that they put into that game is insane. I was blow away just walking up this street, it had a slight incline and there was a bridge going over the top and you could see the train in the distance. And then there was this diner, and there were people walking around in the diner and a guy came out and his phone rang, and he picked up his phone and he was leaning on something and talking, then he walked around the corner and there was a hotdog stand. None of it looked like generic place art. Even like, going down the street, the asphalt on the street had areas where it had been dug up. You know like in San Francisco where they put those f***ing metal plates down everywhere, and they wreak havoc with your suspension? There was an intersection that obviously had some roadwork done on it, and the asphalt was different and there was one of those metal plates.

Mark: When you're watching him walk around that area, it didn't seem tiled and it didn't seem like it was graphics that had been set up and put textures on it.

John: It wasn't pulled from a palette and dropped in it. This was like a hand crafted environment, where everything looked like the artists had just gone wild.

Mark: The visual difference between previous GTA and this, it's night and day, it really is.

On character depth:

John: The way that the character carries himself, and the expression... I mean I know they've been big in the past on trying to build emotional connection, but now the stuff that they're doing with like body language and stuff like that..

Yet more details (http://www.gtagaming.com/index.php): (http://mattyblog.cookynet.com)

• A Near Collision between two cars caused a pedestrian to proclaim loudly "That was f***ed up"

• As Niko approached several people milling in a large group, he sort weaved in and out of them. At one point, he even pushed a pedestrian gently out of his way.

• As Niko continued descending a small hill further down the road, we noticed the way his weight seemed to shift backwards a little, as though he was saving himself from just pitching forwards and setting off into a run. He looked exactly like someone walking down a hill does.

• Another example of the wight shifting was shown later, when Niko began running - looking much like a normal person does instead of some unrealistic video game representation. He leaned a little to the left and right, depending on which direction Rockstar took him, rather than his top half staying stationary and only his legs moving, as per previous GTA games.

• The sight of Niko just walking up some steps managed to impress too.

• The Rockstar team did inform us that that fire escapes and other stuff can be used within the game. We saw a ton of these around Broker and we're sure they'll come in handy, at least in terms of roof access for sniping missions in the finished game, if sniper missions remain, of course.

• Rather than the rags to riches story of old games, GTA IV looks more like a rags to better rags story. The idea is ostensibly for Niko Bellic to keep afloat in Liberty City, rather than walking the streets with tons of cash dripping out of every pocket. After all, if Niko had accumulated over half a million dollars, it's a little far fetched for him to want to carry out other missions. He'd be set for life from that point on and could provide for both himself and his brother. We therefore imagine GTA IV will have a much more realistic approach to funds and how much you'll ultimately have to spend them throughout the game.

• Little focus on building business empires this time - it makes no sense to continue living a criminal life if you're pulling in lucrative results at your pizza parlor, nightclub or taxi rank.

• Unlike other GTAs, IV will have a lesser known voice cast and music that isn't distinctly popular or obvious to the 2007 settings. Expect many unsigned bands or indies to show up.

VG,

What specifically are you trying to say? That you should know better by now but you just will never learn. You keep expecting improvements that will make the game so different from what it was like the last time you saw it that it would be like comparing night and day, and that is not going to happen.

We should keep this stuff in the GTA4 Official Thread. How about we let the people who do not visit General Gaming know about the latest GTA IV news as well?

hmmmm, I was expecting something a little cheesier......thats doesn't look half bad.
Whats the price difference(or has it even been announced yet)?

[EDIT] nvm - $89.95
so for $30 more dollars you get a duffle bag, a locker box, and some artwork.......

Then what's the point of the Official Thread?Don't ask me. All I know is that since the GTA IV thread was moved from this board to General Gaming it's been getting many less hits, many less posts, less timely updates and less exposure overall. I just don't know why the PS3 board can't be a place where we can discuss GTA IV.

Why was the GTA4 thread moved from this board?

It's going to also be a PS3 game!

Unless of course we only want to use this board to talk about exclusive PS3 games, and that would be fine with me.

However, I'm excited about GTAIV and thought it would be appropriate to update everyone about the video that's posted today.

The game comes out in 3 months, which means it'll be done in about 1 and a half, which means the graphics engine is finished, and from here any graphical tweaking will be just optimization on the performance side; framerates, collision, glitches, etc. Sorry to dash your hopes!

Agreed. I'm actually a bit unimpressed graphically so far, it looks a little off for whatever reason. But I don't expect that from a GTA game so it's not a huge deal. The game seems really sweet though :)

* All footage is captured in real-time on a next generation gaming console.

* It's running on Rockstar's RAGE engine, also used in Table Tennis.

* The game uses euphoria, a fully procedural animation package created by NaturalMotion.

* The music -- titled "Arm In Arm (Shy Child Remix)" -- is by New York City-based band The Boggs

What the hell though, they seem great to me. What did they expect real-life quality? I dont see what their problem is.

But anyway, cant wait for this one. Only 4 more months and i wonder if we'll hear anything about multiplayer possibilities at E3. But GTA games were never really at E3 were they? Not playable for sure but maybe just a trailer that weve seen.

This is shaping to be the title to beat during the holidays. Im impressed with nearly every aspect (visually anyways). Odd that it is a multi plat. title that may walk away with the most impressive visuals of any of the next gen exclusives. The amount of details and attention given to this game looks to be staggering; hopefully R* can come through on the finished product.

Im waiting to see which system it turns out better for to the slightest detail maybe. If its in fact true that the PS3 wont get any exclusive downloadable content if its own or 360's(dont gotta be te 360's) then the 360 version might be ultimately better. But then again we dont know what there doing with the PS3's blu-ray and HDD since they were complaining about the 360...

Good point, very good point. This ill be R*'s first time doing downloadable content, well to my knowledge. Way to completely miss the point by 100 miles! It's GTA, and it looks pretty, and, instead of just making the game more and more and bigger, they're actually tuning and revising the gameplay and the rules of this world they've made. I'm not even a GTA fan by a longshot but even a blind man could see that this game has a lot going for it. It's not the most detailed game but how many other games match it in scope? It's an entire goddamn city that is visually on par with its contemporaries, if not better. A game of this scope on the PS2 or Xbox meant it basically look like shit because devs had to do a balancing act. Now the world is huge and looks believable. The trailer didn't make me wet my pants, and I don't think it was supposed to do more than give us some more background on the character or the tone of the new story.

Man, people now are so afraid to be impressed.

My biggest gripe about the GTA series was police incompetence.

A gang of criminals could be firing down on me with every weapon in their arsenal and a cop would drive by like they were playing with water guns......but as soon as you open fire on them, that little star pops up and now you have criminals and law enforcement officers coming down on you. Used to frustrate me to no end.

Man, people now are so afraid to be impressed.you just answered yourself on why some of us wouldn't be impressed...

Only fans of the series would be SUPER impressed that finally a GTA games actually looks good. But if your casual GTA, maybe played through the first, a little of the second, and was one of the people that felt the series was extremely repetitive, then I don't understand why it's hard to see my point-of-view.

The game looks mediocre IMO, doesn't matter if it's GTA or Socom...

Am I saying it sucks??! Of course not. And I like the direction there taking by going for more details and animations, and making the city feel more alive etc..

However, many of the comments I was reading were like this was some of the hottest ish to watch right now, I watched the trailer, expecting to be blown away like I was with Ratchet, and I just saw a much improved GTa game:huh:

All I'm saying is WTF??! I'm not a fan, and that's not that impressive...

in all fairness, its a little easier to make "cartoony" games/characters look better(in both graphic quality and art direction) than something that is supposed to simulate real world environments. This is one of the reasons WOW is so popular.

GTA is all about gameplay, and they didn't show off too much, but is there really a need too?
What does RockStar need to do to "Revolutionize" this game?

I say nothing..... improve AI/Physics and maybe add a few new gameplay features, like hanging from helicopters, etc.
(that doesn't mean more mini games - like hot coffee mod, lol)

The story, animations, gameplay has only been hinted at. I'm seeing people going gaga over the visuals, and I'm just asking? WTF:huh:

Maybe a bit closer to release date when I can see that you can climb on more walls than Assassin's Creed, or the story isn't some mission based mini-game but it's actually gripping and involving and makes you want to finish the game in one night. Well then, I can post my excitement. But currently, I'm failing to understand the "giddiness" of this thread...

GTA always had crappy visuals- always. their best effort looks like a cartoon project gone bad. but this one is amazing. before you name the best lookers you ever saw, keep in mind the genre GTA is in; this is a huge open world game in which graphics have to be consistent. for that, it looks impressive. and we're not just talking about graphics, check the physics as well. look at when he shoots the car; it reacts to bullet hits. look at how Nico swings holding that truck.

two things to notw; the black helicopter looks great and there is someone kicking aomeone else in the bascketball court at 38 seconds in the trailer. lol

Nothing revealed, nothing "mind blowing", just a simple game trailer. Might get it though (best 3rd party non-exclusive there is, imho, yet to be fought out with AC), not sure yet.

I think the graphics do look worse, but the LaLiLuLeLo is right. The game will have the best jokes, the biggest scope, the stupidest missions, the best voice acting, and be a real movie game.

Those seeking graphics thrills should always look away from GTA4.

Omni, and everyone else whose saying WTF is so cool about GTAIV or you know whatever it is you're saying. Lemme chime in.

I was never a GTA fan. Never.

I can't make it simpler than that. More to the game itself. Something about the protagonist Nicco, he's no muscle totting, cussing, italian, gangsta look alike. Instead, He gives this persona of an immigrant, afaict. His features are humble yet enough to portray a tough guy look. This character resonated with me more than any other in the past, in short.

That ... and the graphics. Bring your attention to the toll gate scene. Look at the bridge far in the background. Look at Nicco desperately wavering his legs while hanging onto a helicopter. Shadows, lighting, animation, bullet holes(ala 8days GDC'06 demo) are all a great step above any other GTA ever.

I've played all the GTA's to a fair extent. Didn't finish any to the end but damn if I hadn't played atleast half of each. I liked what I played then but I love what I see now even more. Everything is 2-3 steps above from the past and that's good enough. The fmv sequences, the sound, voice acting, graphics, lighting, onscreen character amount, animation, etc All seem to have improved in a lot of ways. And I'm also very impressed by the movie-esque trailer and how they tried to convey Nicco as a victim in all of it. Vague references to story yet highly addictive elements thrown in to yearn what's in store.

I can't describe anymore. I've stopped writing as much as I used to before. I dun know why. Just take my words for what you will. Not tryin to convince anyone to agree. Only that, I'm surprised myself at how I being such a critic of the series am going badzookas crazy over the latest iteration. Regardless of how anyone else sees it. I'm sold by this 1min showcase. A job very well done and IMO only the likes of Kojima or Square can pull me in this quick. Considering I know myself to not be easily impressed by every other vgame in the blue. Again, take that for what you wil.

Peace.

I strongly agree with Z and yoshaw lol. When I'm looking at this trailer, I'm just imagining what kind of things I can do, where I can explore, how I can interact with the other people in the world.

Check out when the car is getting shot. Bullet marks in the windshield, nice wheel popping effects, I mean, this, graphically, is Eight Days trailer lite version like yoshaw said. The scale of the game is ridiculous which I know is said over and over again, but it's crazy how much is jampacked into it.

I mean think about the things in the game. Breaking open car windows with your elbow, fully animated into the game. Look at the expressions during gameplay. Look at how well he animates when he walks. Look how many people are walking around.

And it's hilarious that what I just put there is the surface of the game! That's just what you see if you watch 30 sec clips of it! In the game description in previews it says buildings are no longer just boxes, you enter them easily with no loading. You can enter or escape through a backdoor or window even. You can run up a freaking fire escape to the top of a building, or down it for a rooftop chase or getaway.

GTA IV is a game with one of the largest worlds, but ironically it's by far one of the most jampacked with content and variability and interactivity. I mean.. that's just amazing to me. I can't stress enough how much I want to play this game.

This is the ultimate action game to me. This is stuff I used to think about 'that would be so cool to do in a game, to drive everywhere, to be able to go in here, do this and that, climb a tree or a pole, jump onto a back of a vehicle like back home, climb stairs/fire escapes on sides of buildings that have been unclimbable since videogames have ever existed etc etc etc.'

And for what it's worth for me as well, for basically everything I'm very picky and quite the connoiseur (however the hell that is spelled). That's my take on how GTA IV appeals to me. It looks like one of the finest games that will be ever made.

P.S. God damn, my net is so slow here haha, it's such a struggle just to post something lol.

Good post Yoshaw and Curry... i agree it could be a big game...But it's just VERY, VERY easy to get excited about these big blockbuster games--and I am extremely skeptical when it comes to titles with a lot of hype. I immediately saw =-o and exclamation points with no reasoning behind--my first guess, "my goodness you guys are buying into the hype-this doesn't even look that awesome:huh:" But I see where some of you are coming from, and I hope it shapes up to be that living breathing city with an amazing story with a character you can relate to, right now, I'm not about to give Rockstar the benefit of the doubt--they've milked the franchise a bit too much for me to do that.

I agree they've milked it a bit on the side with the Stories games. I would have to admit though, I'd do the exact same thing. I think their three main games were real successors for the franchises and really advanced the whole game idea.

But that's cool. We should wait to see if they deliver I guess also... this game is getting hyped a lot. From my personal experience, only my own, to me and what I was always hyped about for the GTAs, my personal expectations were always matched. I hope the same will happen this time lol.

P.S. I do agree about Oblivion what Apple said. Amazing game, but it's niche, it's really not mainstream. It's as mainstream as Bioshock is going to be. Which is also going to be an amazing game, but it's not like it's going to set the retail channels on fire like we know others have and can.

I don't think that theory can be applied to GTA though. I dunno... again, I just have to come back to my own personal experience, GTA has stunned me three times in a row. I have confidence in them :)

But GTA IV reminds me GTA III, my favorite GTA on the PS2.
I was damn impressed by the first trailer, with the city being really croweded and the car traffic amazing, but I just hope the final game will have those features and not, empty streets and only 5 or 6 people on the streets every blocks.

I don't know what some people are complainging about. The atmosphere and look of the game is what gets me excited. Not neccesarily that it looks amazing (and GTA games have never been measured by there graphical quality but there depth and the free roaming gameplay).

And considering the past GTA games were so compelling and engrossing with graphics that were short of ugly i get excited about this one. Since the graphics are actual good and everythings looks (and most likey) feels more alive which will probably make the experience THAT much more memorable. Sorry, thought this would get more attention here.

In GTA IV Time Square will be called in “star Junction”
- You can buy weapons using a cellular phone
- The police radioing for help feature returns
- Each criminal offense drives the Wanted level up. As soon as you reach several stars, The other player can locate you on the radar and deliver some serious fireworks on ya.
- Rockstar is designing GTAIV as a seamless HD Experience
-The driving mode has been altered given the cars addition weight( and a more realistic feel) (PLASTIC CARS UNCONFIRMED)
- The city Skylines are breath taking
-There are no pauses for Loading when entering an interior location
-Nikos facial expressions fits the actions perfectly.
-The use of cover and an overhaul system makes battles very fierce.
-The liberty city waterways plays a significant role in the game
- The atmosphere and noise of firefights is scarily reminiscent of <strong>GEARS OF WAR</strong>
More details in magazine scans.
- GTA4 has its own internet in the game and its going to be very important, and Niko uploaded his cv using it to someone hes hired to kill so he cud get a interview for a job, then he go's to the interview and kills his mark.
-Theres this new way of shaking the cops to do with a circle thing, when u get out of the circle u lose em and u can be smart like go down a street when ppl can't see you and knick another car and drive straight past the cops and they won't notice you, more realistic stuff, sounds cool, the gun mechanics are apparently a lot like gears of War.

Stolen from NeoGAF:

New scans from german magazine Games Aktuell:
(Note: Some screens in the mag are labelled with "PS3". I don't know if this is true, but if yes, these should be the first screens of the PS3 version)

Some infos:

- There will be no Ammu Nation shops anymore.

- The girl with the lollipop is called Lola. It seems that she is a prostitute, but no further information is given about her.

- If you take a cab you can mark any point on the map in order to arrive there. There are even special options: If you have have hunger, you will be driven to the next fast food restaurant. If you're hurt you'll be driven to the hospital.

- If the police searches you, you won't find a cab that will transport you.

- The camera is now positioned lower and more left when you sit in a car. According to Rockstar this gives a more realistic feeling. But there are still different camera settings.

- If you're in a mission, the map not only shows a symbol, but even a line with the best route.

- You can walk, run or sprint. Latter will make you exhausted after a while.

- In the mission where you have to kill the Lawyer Mr. Goldberg there is a dialogue between him and Niko (after Niko pulled out his gun). Goldberg says: "I don't fear guns. You know, guns don't kill people - Videogames kill people." (Hello Jack )

- The following shootout with the police is one of the best ever in a GTA-game according to the magazine. You have to cover and shoot while things fly through the room from the bullets. One policeman even fell down the escalator when they shoot him in the knee.

" Speaking to the gaming websites gather who were gather at the GTAIV preview event, Rockstar has confirmed that that the PS3 version of GTAIV is a week to two weeks behind the XBOX360’s version.

The demo which was shown is from the Xbox 360 version of the game. The PlayStation 3 version is still “a week or two behind,” according to Rockstar. The build shown is 5 weeks old, and the framerate has improved considerably since the last demo."
