Sales for Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 plunged, while movement for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 increased in the latest sales figures from Ebay. Nintendo's Wii held the steepest sales decrease at 26 percent, down from a decrease of 16 percent the week prior. Despite a two-week fall, the console is the No. 1 Most Popular video game hardware on Ebay, carrying an average sale price of $418.22.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 held a double-digit decrease of 10 percent in sales, down from a decrease of two percent one week ago. The console is the No. 2 Most Popular video game hardware on Ebay and sells at an average of $346.84.
Sony's PS3 carried the largest sales gain at 16 percent, up from 13 percent the week prior. The hardware ranks as the third best-selling video game hardware at an average price of $587.07.
Wii is the top-selling console in the U.S., selling 338,000 units in the month of May. By comparison, the Xbox 360 moved 155,000 units, followed by the PS3 at 82,000 units in the same period.http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=4400
Not a HUGE piece of news, but something none the less.

Is it strange to anyone else that the average price is slightly below retail for the PS3? I know it's not down by much, but still.
I also wonder how much the 360 Elite is going for on average.
Also, it's rather funny that the how expensive the "cheapest" console still is. Does Nintendo not realize that other people are profiting a lot from the fact that they understock demand?

I think that means that some people want a cheaper PS3, even if they just save a few dollars.

these are retailers that buy them at a whole price which come down cheaper. that and retailers do not buy the machines at the same official price tag we consumers do. :)

check it.

Ninty is not 'under stocking' their systems on purpose. this is as much as they can make.

I don't use eBay for some reasons- that are recently solved, but I just found out that there are official outlets using eBay to sell their products just like those on Amazon and other major online retailer. I thought eBay was only 'user generated' with most of its stuff being used. by that, the first comment I made will imply.:)

No, because people can practically walk into a store and buy one. You use Ebay so you can pay less.

I am still not sure about this, to be honest. (I dont want to say Ninty does, but I still have concerns...) I mean, the Wii, compared to the 360 or PS3 is VERY easy to built. I think it is as "easy" to build as the PSTwo (which sold more units per month than the Wii does). Ok, Sony mostly built it their own (and Ninty doesnt), but still...
And even if they cant make any more units now, why dont they contract more companys in China to produce more? They are limiting themselves right now. (and again, since launch I was able to go into some stores to get a Wii here in Stuttgart^^)
And the lower than retail prices up top are normal. I mean, many people sell their used PS3/360/Wii on Ebay because they dont want it anymore, so as a used product it is sold at a lower price. But tbh, I find it interesting, that the average PS3 price still is only $13 less than the SRP. As many of theses are auctions, this tells us a bit about it. I mean, if "nobody" wanted a PS3, this price would be MUCH lower, yet the 360 is $50 below retailprice (but it is longer in market and has a low price SKU, which "nobody" buys). Tbh, I, at this state, would never get a used 360 on Ebay (Ring of Death etc.).
And the Wii. I am impressed. Usually higher than SRP prices are not found in a) summer and b) more than 6 months after launch. (And it doesnt have rampant reliability problem as doesnt the PS3, I am proud for both Ninty and Sony)

Geez, it's posts like this that make me want to slap my neighbors mother.

The Wii IS selling more per month than the PS2 did. They are also producing more per month than any console in history has ever been produced and they already have contracts in the works at more production facilities and Sony outsourced all PS2 manufacturing after 2002.
Wii --------- PS2 Best May sales (May is the most recent month for US NPD sales).
338k (2007)-- 288k (2003)
Wii is much more technical than the PSTwo. The Wii CPU and GPU are 90nm process vs 180nm process for PSTwo, embedded 4MB 1t-SRAM on the graphics chip itself, built in Wifi, built in 512 MB Flash RAM, first consumer electronics product to offer slot loading for 2 different disc sizes, all GC controller port and memory card interface, and the Wii-remote is also quite a technical piece of hardware with an accelerometer and IR technology, etc...
"For the first three months of this year we have been producing one million hardware units per month. We are increasing the manufacturing capacity and forecast to ship 14 million in this fiscal year to our distributors and retail customers globally," the spokesperson said.

"production of the console, currently being handled solely by Foxconn Precision Components (FPC). New manufacturing partners under consideration include Asustek Computer, Compal Electronics, Inventec and Wistron, which are all eager to land a contract with the Japanese firm."

"Basically, nearly all of our PlayStation 2 production will be shifted to China next business year," Kenichi Fukunaga, a spokesman at Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), said."

It's like I've been saying, people want PS3, it just cost too much for people to bear. Even if they could save the money, psychologically 600 bucks is too much to swallow.

Oh, dont you underestimate the production problems of the PSTwo. The PS2 also has embedded DRAM (4MB in the GS) and the PSTwo combined both, the EE and the GS in one single big chip (as in the PS3 BC chips).
And the 2 disc sizes is not true. The Apple slot in drives could do this too, and dont say, Apples arent consumer products :D
Most of Wiis hardware is done via established processes. 90nm arent much of a hassle anymore, especially when IBM is doing it (the CELL is more bigger, hence gives much more problems as it also runs MUCH hotter). The XeCPU is the same.
And the rest (Gamepads, gameports, flashrom etc...) is "the easiest" to do nowadays. A 2GB flash based MP3 player can be bought at less than 50€ in Germany today. IR technology can be found in <5€ TV remote controls and even the cheapest GC pads cost less than 5€, so the connectors are not any problem to produce.
Why I brought up the PSTwo was, the miniaturisation of it was a major engineering feat by Sony.
