PS3 outselling Wii and 360 in Australia
50,000 PS3s sold down under since launch; Sony Computer Entertainment Australia head says console "outselling Wii and Xbox 360".

Last week, Nintendo Australia was shouting from the rooftops about the success of the Wii down under, with the console becoming the fastest to reach 100,000 units sold down under. Now Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has gone on the offensive, with managing director Michael Ephraim saying the PlayStation 3 has been the number one selling next-gen console in the country since its launch, outselling the Wii and the Xbox 360 almost every week.

In an interview with GameSpot AU, Ephraim quoted figures from data trackers GfK Australia, which show that the PS3 has sold more than 50,000 units since it was launched on March 23, 2007. In comparison, the Wii has sold 100,000 units since its launch on December 7, 2006. "Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week," Ephraim said.

"Since March 23, PS3 has been the number one-selling next-gen console in Australia, and this is GfK figures. We've now sold 50,000--and we're very excited about the fact that it's being sold in retailers that are gaming retailers as a gaming device and other things, but as you'll notice it's now being sold in Harvey Norman consumer electronic stores as a Blu-ray player."

Australia's next-gen console sales figures seem to be in marked contrast to Japan's, with figures from May showing that the Wii outsold the PS3 by five units to one.

I kinda wish our little corner of the earth actually mattered in the greater scheme of things.

The marketing down here happens to not suck, so I'm not surprised really. Remembering that it's a grand, which is alot of money for us.

*actually reads article*

Yeah, they're being sold as Blu-Ray players at the Harvey Normans. Having a system that is more than one type of thing wasn't as hard to shelf as people first thought, I suppose.

Yeah, maybe the US marketing should take a page out of their book. But really, here to me it just seems like they aren't doing anything. Maybe I don't watch enough T.V.

i dont know how to think about all this. to me it sounds like Sony is grasping. yes they've got to 50k but it was still slower than Wii and 360. yes PS3 been outselling the competition but it's common for the newest console to do that for a short while.

i suppose it was the same with Nintendo though. they said they "reached 100k the fastest" but they failed to mention that it was only by 1-2 weeks. they all say what they can to keep the fans happy. words are great but i think they should all reduce the talking and put in more action to keep us happy.

anyways for a AU$1000, PS3 doing fairly well but there's a long way to go to catch up. 50k behind Wii and 120k behind X360 is not an easy task. it can be done but they'll want to get it done sometime next year before it becomes even harder.

This isn't really worth discussing. It's old news and really who gives a crap.
