I was wondering whether to post this in the PS2 board or here, but here it goes. I also felt free to change the headline.

PS2 Gets Smaller (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/802/802262p1.html)
Sony manages to shrink things even further.

July 8, 2007 - The slimline PStwo is already too small for comfort for some, but Sony has managed to make it even smaller! Japan's Nikkei Business Daily reports today that the new model SCPH-79000 of the PS2 hardware features a drop in weight from 900 to 600 grams. The system's AC adapter has also dropped from 350 to 250 grams.

The paper reports that the weight loss was achieved by a reduction of parts. This has also resulted in a drop in production costs, something that's sure to benefit Sony's bottom line.

Sony has started shipping the new hardware, which is visually identical to previous versions.I guess this could be the last hardware revision. Or maybe not.

Disappointing...I was expecting this to be an even smaller one, inside and out.

Christ, would you want it even smaller? So long as production costs are reduced that's all that matters to be honest.

Believe it or not, redesigning the case would definately be an extra expense in hardware development. It already was very small, and now it's lighter (hence the custom thread title I used). That's as good as it gets.

I just want to see one that houses the disc and that's pretty much it...haha it would be amazing.

Yeah Elf that would be pretty amazing. How much smaller do they want it?

has anyone seen those record players that are basically a little battery operated car that sits on the record and drives around in the groove? it'd be pretty cool to see a console version of that....completely impossible and impractical, and massive health and safety issues, but cool nonetheless :) or a little clamp that holds the disc vertical, and the laser is incorporated into the clamp, with the rest of the disk exposed and spinning...that'd be cool. but won't ever happen.
