I really liked the book but I'm afraid the movie will kill it. Any impressions from the fans of the books who've seen this movie?

Ok, I guess I'm slow. I really want to go see it, although I'm sure it is just a brief highlight of the book.

Well of course. I just hope they don't make "him" dying a really lame event, since that was probably the part that emotionally affected me the most of any of the six books, and if it's lame in the movie it'll make me feel like a wuss. :P

I'm no fan of Harry, but I did think it was interesting, based on what I've read, that the longest book of the series (to date) happens to be the shortest movie. Granted, that's still 2:20, but I would have guessed the movie would be upwards of 2:40, 2:50.

Milly

I was also really surprised how short they made the movie... They did speed through it very quickly... well when "He" Died was a bit different to the book, but the before events were pretty good. Its annoying because Hes just soo much cooler than everyone else. In Grimerauld place everyones all Bleh looking and hes just sitting there looking super cool... Im annoyed there will be no of him to date...

I am going to put spoilers in this post. If you don't know what happens at the end of this story, don't read any further. There's really no need for spoiler tags at this point....the book has been out for years now.

I thought the entire thing was very rushed, and consequently lost something very important. Reading through the book the first time made me immensely angry and frustrated. You're supposed to really hate Dolores Umbridge. Instead she became an almost comical character, inspiring laughter rather than anger. It really changed the whole feel of the story.

I was upset that even though Fred and George's escape was quite entertaining, we didn't get to see them tell off Umbridge. That was one of the best parts of the book.

They totally played down Sirius' death. It was almost a nonfactor by the end of the film. Which reminds me, the ending was pretty lame.

Despite all this though, I still thought the movie was very good. I was dissapointed with it, but I still enjoyed it.

Hmm, those were a lot of my concerns. I'm not as anxious to see the movie, but I might just go do it anyway still.

I remember in the fourth film, Quidditch was completely left out. I left the screening room with a look of profound indignation... I had gone to watch the movie for that bit. I thought the Tri-Wizard tournament was just a device to introduce Voldemort... Anyway, this film was much shorter than its predecessors, though it managed to remain somewhat faithful to the book--which was an amazing feat, especially for a first time director. I was pleased, for the most part. Though the critics over at Rotten Tomatoes aren't.

Yes there was.

CORRECTION: I was referring to the Quidditch World Cup, and I suppose I got to the cinema a bit late and missed the whole part at the beginning. WikiPedia says it was definitely there.

Ooooooh, the World Cup. Of course. They cut that out? Bullcrap, that could have made an awesome scene. I guess it was part of the unusually long pre-Hogwarts section and they wanted to take it out. That or they were too lazy to choreograph and animate what looks like professional and exceptionally skilled players of a sport that doesn't exist.

In #4, there was quidditch, but they only showed like 20 seconds of it then the scene with the dark mark and everything that takes place after the world cup happened.

I just got back from The Order of the Phoenix. It was pretty good, but my favorite continues to be HP4 Goblet of Fire, as it was my favorite book in the series too.

Yeah. It was the definite turning point... When it started getting serious. My least favorite was the third.

The Third is My favorite book because it introduces my favorite character! I was so bummed when he died because I thought that they really underplayed it, and in the book Bellatrix never used the Avada Kedavara Curse.. To me in that movie Sirius was the coolest character, and deserved a better send off in my opinion, but anyway I do however like how he smashed Lucius in the face, I really wanted to rewind that and watch it again!

The Goblet of Fire was by far the best in the series. We'll see if that holds up after next Saturday.

And by the way, there was no Quidditch in the fifth movie either. Sorry to dissapoint.

Ugh, you're dead to me. The second was my least favorite (after the first and fifth) and the fourth was my favorite. The third introduced some of the best characters and had some really cool plot lines.

The fifth was a good movie, but I didnt enjoy it as much as the fourth for the fact much like the fifth book which I didnt like thanks to Harry whinning throughout the book appears in the movie, just not as much due to time constrictions. But when it happens, its quite annoying as well as the Sirius death which was poorly executed without and real connection in the film.

"Oh I seemed to have died... jolly good."

When he died, some guy in the back of the theater when "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" really loudly, so it kind of killed the moment for me. And yeah, it sped through it WAY too fast and missed a lot of key parts of the book. Yes it was a good movie but as far as being faithful to the book, it wasn't great.

Cofey
07-13-2007, 03:58 AM
Ha, when he died at my theater, everyone got really quiet. Then somebody laughed really loudly and deliberately.....then someone else yelled "douchebag" equally as loudly.

I'm not gonna lie, it was pretty hilarious, even though it killed the moment.

Heh, the sixth movie especially with the death in that one is going to be so bad in theaters. Minutes before we first see Dumbledore and then Snape I just know someone will yell it out and spoil the film instantly.

"SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE"

Kronz
07-13-2007, 11:39 AM
I had a pretty normal experience (no yellings-out by the time Sirius died, which seemed unusually brief... even brusque), but there was this couple behind me who had the brilliant idea of bringing what looked like a three-year-old girl and a baby... And I remember hearing, "Do you need to go potty, Erika?" And then the guy walks out.

I liked the movie.
The fact that I judged it based it solely on the movie itself and not what was left out from the book made it so much better.
I think the end seemed really rushed.
Sirius' death was weird. The veil was strange, and there was no AK curse involved.
They messed up the prophesy too. It was only read aloud when it was broken, and they didn't even say the whole thing.
Jo worded it very carefully, and I think they just kind of disregarded that.
The last scene with Dumbledore was annoying too. Dumbledore should have had a kind of lecture thing there, just like in the book.

All in all, it was good. I liked it and I'd go see it again.

Every moment in this film felt to short. It felt like one long montage, sans the South Park song...

Phoenix
07-15-2007, 06:52 PM
Well, they had like 10 seconds per page on average. They kind of had to, since they insisted on making it so short.

Kronz
07-15-2007, 09:03 PM
Yeah, I didn't understand why they made it so short. King Kong got away with three hours a year ago. And the Luna Lovegood character was... strange. Weirder than I remember her being.

There was so much stuff left out though... Like when Harry kisses Cho... Dobby decorated the place, but movie-goers don't see Dobby at all. They think, "Oh, look, how convenient." It really was sloppy. Not looking forward to the sixth at all, with David Yates at the helm.

After a couple of days to ponder this film, I must say, the script writers and director are fucking lost.

I understand that they had to cut a lot out, even if they wanted to get it into three hours long. What I don't understand is some of the choices they made for what they cut out.

For example, the entire Cho sub-plot. Now, they probably would have only spent a good five minutes on her in total in the film, which really doesn't do the part she played in the book any justice. They didn't even both to finish the plot in any way, just leaving it hanging.

So why keep it in at all? The argument of trying to stay faithful to the book is null and void because they didn't in the end. Harry kisses her, they talk about it once, and then it's as though she doesn't exist.

Furthermore, Neville's entire subplot. I know it's a little important to Neville's character, but Neville has never been terribly important to the films as a whole.

Seamus' was pointless.

The scene in which Trelawney is being fired - useless in the end. The list goes on.

There was so much wasted screen time in this film, which is certainly a shame, since there are certainly more important parts in the book.

How about giving some more time to developing the important plots? Sirius Black's death could have used an extra minute. The fight at the end left a lot to be desired. The Occlumency lessons needed so much more time. Just exploring the characters and making it not feel like it's a grab bag of pages from the book, that's what should have been done.

In the end, the script writers need to understand, you can do a good movie based on a good book, but you gotta treat it as a movie - the book's already finished after all.

Just my personal thought of how the order of the films go from best to least favorite.

3 > 4 > 1 = 5 > 2

There was just too much Umbridge in five for my liking. Though, I say it's on par with 1 and better than 2.

Hisham

Ehh, 2 was probably the best movie conversion tho. It is my least fave book, but it did the transition to a movie the best.

I hated the movie.

I have heard that #1 is still one of the favorite movie conversions.

It's going to be tough to convert #6 into a film with all the flashbacks and #7 with all the morphing into other characters.
