On the front of my m7360y HP desktop, there a slot for a "personal media drive". It opens up, and it looks like a hard drive can fit in there. Any idea? The manual just says Personal Media Drive without an explanation.

It's for a HP product that is an external hard drive.

ah. It looks terrible.
I just read up on it. It supposedly costs 250 dollars with only 160gb. I can get 300 for 200 or in some places as low as 150.

My moms new comp has a slot for one of those and I had no what the fuck it was for. I just knew it was eating up a lot of space and had zero documentation about it from HP.
If that's what it is, that's absolutely asinine.

HP could have used that area for something.

I guess it's for people who don't know how easy it is to put in an internal hard drive.
Or those who don't realise that there are external hard drives being sold.
Or something.

Mine is 250 GB. It WAS internal until upgrading to a new mobo, CPU, etc...meant no possible use as it were in the old comp. So having your new cake and eating it too, yeah, that pwns.
This HP thing....doesn't pwn.

agreed, what a dumb idea. That's all it is, they could have put some other drive or filter or something in it's place...

The drive is nothing more than a HP property USB external drive. The back side of the unit has a power and a propriety USB pin out which interlocks with the slot. You can get a USB drive at a large capacity for a cheaper price as has been already noted.
