Most likely due to the recent game bundles Nintendo has been promoting for the past few weeks in which one can buy a Gamecube and receive a free game on top (Metroid Prime, Star Fox Adventures, Resident Evil 0, or Mario Party 4) Nintendo has announced a 110% increase in sales of its third-place console in February over January.
The huge Zelda:the Wind Waker pre-orders (apparently 600,000 at this time) may have also helped contribute.

GameCube sales again rose in week-on-week comparisons, this time by a further 5%, no doubt buoyed by the release of the hotly anticipated Super Monkey Ball 2 and the continued success of Capcom’s Resident Evil 0.
Xbox slipped another 5%, a fact that has surprised many given the much-heralded launch of Xbox Live last week, and the media attention it gained.
Perhaps certain retailers will begin to re-think their current videogame shelf-space strategies in the next few months…

When a rise of 50% for Xbox in Japan and Cube drops 5% in a week nobody cares because Cube is still outselling it. Same with USA- GCN's sales rose in USA thanks to the bundle but still got outsold.

This industry, as with any other industry, is about trends. The reason a 50% sales increase in Japan doesn't gain attention is because it is unanimously agreed that the trend will cease to continue in a matter of weeks, if not less. In the case of GameCube however, there are reasons for a possible trend to continue. The free-game bundle, Zelda, increasing advertising. There is a possibility that the trend will continue. Dixons, for example, may believe the trend will end. Yet the hundreds of other retails believe otherwise.

No one really knows who's number 2 right now........... but Microsoft will slip if they don't get a big game out soon to go up against Zelda. C'mon Microsoft, gimmie Brute Force!

Xbox is the suX0rZ. No but on the real, who cares about the numbers. I have a number and 2 letters PS2 is and will always outsell the Cube and Xbox and the Cube and Xbox are so close anyways that it doesn't really matter. Except GameCube has more good games :)
