You know how sometimes there's a character in a game that you just want to kick in the teeth? The character may actually be fun to play and use their skills, but the awful character development and portrayal just kills it.

Allow me to take a moment to unveil my top three characters that irritated the hell out of me:

3. Naja from Mystic Heroes (GCN/PS2) - I don't want to be shallow, but first of all, her feet are too big. Ok, beyond that, she plays quite well, although her magic is weak. But, god, what an annoying voice. And stupid. And repetitive. No, I never cared that "now you're angry".

2. Lyude from Baten Kaitos (GCN) - I will let it slide that his "special equipment" is freaking girly earrings, but I CAN'T let it slide that he attacks with guns that look like musical instruments. Just... no! Unacceptable. Maybe acceptable if it weren't so dumb, but NO! I would laugh in his face if he tried to shoot with me a french horn. Also, throw in the fact that he goes "This is for you" as if he is getting a stick inserted in his behind when using healing items on other people (AND HIMSELF... you know it's for you!) . Then throw in the fact that his special attacks have musical oriented names that he pronounces strangely and mutters or lets his voice trail off in the middle of what is supposed to be some amazing powerful attack. To put the cherry on top, he joins your party first in a boss-type battle... and then leaves the party immediately after because he has to go cry for a while. No joke. I would step on his foot if he were real.

However, nothing gets more emo than my #1...

1. Inphyy from Ninety-Nine Nights (360) - OK, SHE'S EMO AND SUPPOSED TO BE A BAD ASS. Those two don't mesh. She's also kind of a crazy bitch, but I could let that slide if she didn't cry like a baby later on.

Starred in a terrible 2D platformer on SNES, followed with a terrible 2D sequel, then an even worse 3D game on Playstation. Legendary suckyness.

I actually bought the Playstation version for a dollar. Long box Playstation game, remember them? The game really looks like hell now, and Dana Gould's wisecracking is really really annoying...

Salazar - Resident Evil 4
Is it just be or is the little guy in the blue hat about as scary as tinned rice pudding? He gets a bit more scary when he gets his tentacle thing on, but really... Bit crap. His henchmen are excellent though. Just an annoying little guy with a Napoleon syndrome.

Completely agreed. Tingle is kick ass.

Well, a couple come to mind...

Necrid (Soul Calibur II)- Are you kidding me, McFarlane?

Spawn (Various Games/Media)- See above comment.

Axl Steel (Guitar Hero 1/2)- Something about him...

Lars Umlaut (Guitar Hero 1/2)- Just look at him.

Wario (Various Games)- None of which are very good, and he has a dumb personality. And, especially for being the star of the WarioWare series.

Agents (Elite Beat Agents)- I just don't like these guys for some reason.

Kratos (God of War 1/2)- I don't like that feeling of playing a game and being completely heartless, so I can't like him fully. It's part of the fun, but as a character it makes me dislike him.

He's basically a mindless idiot who's being controlled by someone who's stronger than him, but still think's he's hot shit.

He never does one badass thing, just complains, whines, orders others around and throws a temper tantrum when things go wrong (Leon not dying in the pit).

The ultimate example of this would be when Leon throws the knife and stabbs his hand. He basically starts crying and runs like a little pussy. He's ment to be obnoxious, which makes killing him so satisfying.

Collette from Tales of Symphonia was the first character that came to my mind. She's the most pathetic and emotional character with a horrible voice in a game that's filled with pathetic, emotional characters with horrible voices. I would frequently tell her to shut up whilst playing.Aww, but she's adorable. I greatly disagree with you on most points there, but I bet you were happy when she lost her voice. :P

Also, Lyude is OK, but I can't stand Xelha. She's such a generic personality and her voice (and everyone's) is terrible.

I also hate pretty much anyone from FFXII, especially Fran and excluding perhaps Basch. I understand them trying to have a more realistic and less mystical feel, but at least make your characters interesting!

And last but not least, I dislike Mario characters such as Daisy, Birdo and Waluigi - characters who were created/returned just to be in sports games.

Hm, I know I will get flak for it, but I say

Raiden from MGS2. His whiney character annoyed me. The tanker episode was great and the shell episode ruined it pretty much (It still is a great game, mind you, but I REALLY REALLY disliked Raiden) for me. (Rose... what are you doing here? This doesnt make sense... bla bla bla... Yes I know GW etc. but still).

At first, I found Rikku to be annoying in FFX. But after FFX2, I really started to like her :P. Same goes for Rinoa in FFVIII (but after a while you really start to like her). Selphie however always was a bit of an annoying character.

But right now, I cant think of any character, that really sucked. This should be the case because most games I play rock :D Monkey Island, Indiana Jones (all Lucas Arts adventures) :D

not really a character, but the guy who does the voice over in Burnout:Takedown. Intrusive, idiotic, annoying. Can't stand the game for that reason.

He also had zero character development - started off as a crack fiend living in the streets, and ended up as a crack fiend living in the streets with a rocket ship.

Most of the animals in starfox 64, thanks to the fucking gibberish they constantly spoke, and the general annoyingness and uselessness of them. They made kermit the frog seem well-adjusted and complex.

The australian race driver in V8 race driver 2 - "stomper". wtf? half of those cliche's don't even make sense...

He is retarded. Even though Final Fantasy characters have always been known to be feminine, at least the others have been at least somewhat cool. Vaan is just a bitch and really annoying. I tend to dislike a majority of the characters made by Tetsuya Nomura. That's really all I can think of. Oh, and any character from PSU. Bad.

As for Raiden (MGS2), I never thought it was that bad. In fact, playing as him only made Solid Snake a better character. The contrast between the two characters worked well. Raiden was a weeny and Solid Snake was a bad ass. Solid Snake's bad ass...ness stood out more when near Raiden.

Bubsy was/is one of my favorite SNES games. Hes just cool.

Also, Segitz is right about LucasArts adventures rocking entirely.
I recently refinished Grim Fandango, and remembered how amazing it truly is.

As for characters that annoy me...

hmm...

...Everybody in the first Metal Gear Solid game.
They all talk too much.
It is for this reason I haven't played any of the others.

Tidus and Yuna: These two are in this spot together, easily two of the most annoying and boring characters. Ever time i saw them on screen i wished that Sin would come down and kill them already so i can have a game with just Aurron, Rikku, and Wakka.

Raiden: Coming fresh from the badassery that was Snake in MGS:TTS and that first four hours of epic win in MGS2 at the tanker, Raiden really was just annoying. He got a lot cooler at the end, imo, but his begining self is enough to net him on this list

Peppy and Slippy in Starfox64: What. The. Fuck?! Without any doubt in my mind, they were easily the two most useless and annoying characters to ever come on screen, to make maters worse, they took it up at the same damn time. It got to the point were i would shoot them down so i didnt have to hear them talk.

Characters that suck. Hmmm...

Slippy, Star Fox 64. "Fox, get this guy off me!" Playing this again on the VC brought many, many, many painful memories flooding back.

Baby Mario, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The crying and the screaming brings back painful memories too. Thank God the rest of the game is so brilliant. Makes this almost bearable.

Alfred Ashford, RE Code: Veronica. Thought about Brad Vickers, but then I remembered the whole Psycho homage they played in this game. Just... wrong.

Ricardo Diaz, GTA: Vice City. Besides being completely off the wire mentally... how exactly did he rise to power? Were his rivals bigger idiots than him or what?

Every single one of characters in Wild Arms 4. Each one is completely flat, you can almost predict what they are going to say in the dialogs. (I enjoyed the game, though.)

Any baby Nintendo characters. They are all already irritating, so... what the fuck?

My first RPG on the Playstation.

I even played the remake one for PS2.

I never had interest on 2-3-4 or whatever.

I liked to beat up the little kids in Fable only because of their voices.

And I never liked Mission Vao or Carth from KOTOR, with their whining and whatnot. I preferred Canderous and HK-47.

if anyone ever played Enchanted Arms, Yuki was pretty annoying. I never used her in one battle, and she just had one of those voices that does nothing but irritate you.

Carth from Kotor was pretty annoying, too.
And the main character from the darkness. i don't know if he's cool in the comic, but he's so fuckin lame in that game.

Wow people actually know what bad characters are here! I don't really hate any characters really. I never really cared much for Jak and Daxter and I don't know much about the MGS characters. It's not the characters I usually hate its the voices. JRPGs anyone?

that chick from soul caliber 3 with the circular blade thing also gave me the shits. Tila i think her name was, or something (yeh, im shit with names). She was supposed to look a bit cute i think, but had the most hideous costume of any character i've seen in a long time, and had the voice of a seventy year old spinster eating gravel. Also was completely pointless, and did pretty much fuck all except make me watch her jump on a fucking raft time after time and tell my character how naive he/she was.

Any character you spend fucking ages trying to kill, eventually managing to do it, and then flicking to a cut scene showing that you DIDN'T kill it, you just made it cut itself and run away, before you have to kill it AGAIN, only this time its stronger (wtf?!), only to have it run away again so the developers can make a sequel.

I'm sorry to say it, but when you think about it, the idea behind the main characters in the Mario franchise is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Why are two Italian fuckin plumbers running around in an apparently imaginary medieval world, fighting muffins and legged bombs. What the hell did they do, fall into the god damn toilet and end up in a world of red, gold, and blue coins with dragons running around and hats that turn you into metal falling out of little green boxes floating in the air. And now that they are here, their primary objective is alas, not to find there way back to the normal world, but to save the princess peach who they've probably never actually become acquainted with and in the end is most likely going to leave Mario because... well... hes an Italian plumber and shes a princess. And what does Luigi get out of the bargon? nothing except to see his brother get the girl and then spend the rest of his life living as the third wheel to the only two other humans in the world and their cult following of muffins, bombs, and little men with mushrooms attached to their faces. Oh but wait, here is Wario, the fat, yellow, ill-tempered Italian plumber, and his friend Walluigi, two characters who have absolutely no backstory whatsoever and serve no purpose other than to run around and bitch about shit that you don't even know, mostly because everything they say is unintelligible aside from the all important theory that Wario is "A-gonna win".

Neg rep me all you want, but I think all the characters are completely idiotic and stupid. Don't take it the wrong way, I think the games are tons of fun. but when you focus on the character descriptions, it all just seems so stupid.

They jump on/kick/get kidnapped by/eat/punch/etc. walking mushrooms and turtle-ducks, and that's the entire premise of their games. Do you really expect good character design? What more could they do?

i disliked some of the newer characters brought into the Sonic franchise during the Dreamcast era, like when they had Tails in a robot in Sonic Adventure 2

also i think it sucks when the sub-bosses are harder than the main bosses

I think its worse when there's a hidden boss that's 10x more powerful than the final boss. It isn't that I don't like the challenge, but I am forced to question why this hidden boss is doing nothing except sitting around; just waiting for me to challenge him in a fight.

You are right, it is a stupid idea. But im glad i enjoy the games and dont focus on the story aspect.
