I was listening to Master of the Puppets earlier today and made a grave discovery. Metallica's last album "St.Anger" sucked not just because it was shit but because it ripped off lyrics from their older albums which were actually good.

Master of Puppets - 1986 - Damage Inc.:
Fuck it all and fucking no regrets
Never happy ending on these dark sets

And then look at this crap!;

St. Anger - 2003 - St. Anger:
Fuck it all and fuckin' no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets

Metallica need to grow their hair back and write some songs. They should have some ideas about their music instead of going into a studio jam and mash up some lyrics to go with their music.

It's Samson-syndrome.
You know, with the hair...
...the lack of... it...

They should focus on the music and avoid making documentaries where they talk about their feelings.

That bit of the lyrics ARE meant to reference the old days.

You know the song ''hit the lights'', he is saying ''fuck it, no regrets about our change- we can still hit the lights on this shitty industry'' kind of thing.

That's how I see it anyway.

Some Kind Of Monster and Purify I think are really great songs.
EVERY Metallica album sounds different and St Anger was just another one- I personally loved it (except for one or two songs).
It certainly isn't an album you look back on and say ''holy shit, fucking classic'' but it's an album you can turn on at anytime and rock out.
As long as I feel like saying ''Metal Up Your Ass!!'' as I'm listening to the songs- It's good for me.

I have yet to be convinced that St Anger is a shitty album. Everyone keeps saying ''It's not as good as their old stuff'' Well who cares? Move the hell on, these guys are in their 50s almost and are still the most energetic and dynamic band out there.
Just because it's not a timeless classic doesn't mean it's shit.

James said it himself that now they start 'playing with music' in the old days it was ''fuck it this riff is shit, play a new one'' but now it's ''well, we can change it a bnit to make it sound good'' so open mindness = shit.
But James feels they are still doing ''what feels right''.

As long as they have the Metallica vibe in them- They'll always be good.

What a long and boring post.

^I must spread some rep before giving you some again.

Although St. Anger wasn't the best of their works, I don't think it was bad by any means. Sure, the snare drum sounded like a trash can and there was a lack of guitar solos, but I still enjoyed a number of the songs. Not all of them, but enough to find the CD to be a decent purchase.
Metallica's got a decent variety of songs and St. Anger only added to that variety. And they're not going back to how they used to be. In fact, they can't. Not because of their "hair maturity" but the lack of Cliff Burton. And the fact that they are getting old.

It's pretty much the same deal with Iron Maiden. Most of those guys are older than the guys in Metallica and their newer stuff is "lighter" than their stuff from the 80s, but it's still friggin' awesome.
