PlayStation Premier: Loco Roco PS3 Official
First look at Buu Buu Cocoreccho! by LocoRoco
by Anoop Gantayat

July 17, 2007 - A cameo appearance as part of Sony's Home announcement earlier this year was confirmation enough for many, but today Sony finally made it official: LocoRoco is coming to your living room. Tentatively titled Buu Buu Cocoreccho! by LocoRoco, this PS3 sequel is set to be made available as a PlayStation Network download.

We have just a few details at this point, and none of them shed any real light on what we can expect from the game. Sony describes the game as "It's LocoRoco, but it's not -- a peculiar extra chapter." That, and a sentence with three different uses of the world play: "Even if you don't play it [as in control the game], the world and the LocoRoco will play [as in both playing amongst themselves and as in playing back like a video] on their own."

Whatever all that means, the PS3 version of LocoRoco is said to feature 200 LocoRoco characters in a new world. You'll be able to use the SixAxis for motion-based controls.

While release information was not announced, the game is listed by Sony as being 95% complete, so we don't expect the wait to be too long. For now, get a sampler through the first screenshot in our media section below.

The LocoRoco sequel has been humming along at a great pace. At the Develop conference, first footage of the PS3 downloadable title was showcased, as evidenced by this off-screen video. There's up to 200 LocoRocos on the screen -- impressive! If this has even half the charm of the PSP original, we're bound for a serious treat.

EDIT: I'm kind of disappointed with the new control scheme. It looks like that the LocoRoco are moving one their own, while you clear their path with a butterfly(The cocreccho?). To be honest, I just wanted to play the regular LocoRoco with motion controls, but it looks like it won't happen this time.

Not that I won't buy it, but still, I feel that this is a missed opportunity.

IGN: LocoRoco PS3 Dated (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/816/816610p1.html)

LocoRoco PS3 Dated
This time, you control a butterfuly.
by IGN Staff

August 29, 2007 - Sony's official confirmation of LocoRoco PS3 came quietly as part of a post E3 Japanese product announcement event. Today, thanks to the latest issue of Famitsu, we have a few new details on the game, which is officially known in Japan as "Oiedeyo LocoRoco!! Boo Boo Cocoreccho!".

Some rumors have popped up suggesting that this PS3 version of LocoRoco is actually just a fancy wallpaper program. This doesn't seem to be the case, as the game is listed in Famitsu as an action title, complete with online rankings.

There are some major differences from the PSP version. You take control this time of a butterfly, or perhaps a group of butterfiles, known as "Cocoreccho." By pressing the circle button, you can make the Cocoreccho shout "boo boo." This makes the sleeping LocoRoco in your area wake up and come to you. Your goal is to lead the LocoRoco to the stage's goal.

The game's title, incidentally, tells the whole story. "Boo Boo" is what Cocoreccho say to make the LocoRoco come to them ("oideyo" is Japanese for ordering someone to come to you).

Based on the slight blurb in Famitsu, LocoRoco PS3 seems to be an entirely different game from the PSP original. We'll have to try it out for ourselves to be sure, though. A PlayStation Network download, the game is due for Japanese release on 9/21. Pricing has yet to be announced.

IGN: LocoRoco PS3 Coming Next Week (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/819/819554p1.html)

UK, September 12, 2007 - Get ready to sing pacchonbo-mo-inoinoi chakaretapatton pankorakettonto-no-ra once more as Sony has confirmed that the LocoRoco PS3 'interactive screensaver' is heading to PlayStation Network in Europe on September 20.

Although not a fully-fledged LocoRoco title, it does let you bounce 200 cheerful singing blobs around the screen, guide them about with a buttefly and 'play' through three different mini-games. Not being a proper game and all, it's releasing at the bargain price of GBP 1.99.

i don't know what is this 'interactive screensaver' crap.
and the funniest thing is that it's in official trailer (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-tWiMtRdtYA).

anyway i find many people complain
that this locoroco is shit in comparsion with psp version.

i don't understand yeah i assume psp version was totally different game.
but it's so childish. i want more the same. i don't want something different.
and this is more complicated than just rotating the world.
hmm
i played ps3 locoroco and i love it. it's simple but very fun game.
so i don't understand maybe i should be happy that i haven't played psp version.
it's funny that people whine about developers making the same thing over again.
and when developer wants to do somethimng different they whine
that it's different. and not what theye where expecting.

this game is sort of like lemings. but you don't have to worry about
them killing themselfs. and you have to wake them first.
there are some nice ideas. there are three mini games.
and this game has plenty sixaxis gameplay which really works.
so if you haven't played psp version and you have read that
this ps3 'screensaver' is not as good as oryginal one. forget it.
it's cheap and very fun just buy it :)
and the music is just perfect :)

IGN: LocoRoco Cocoreccho! Review (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/823/823256p1.html)

September 26, 2007 - One of the most charismatic and original games to have (and likely will ever) hit the PSP is LocoRoco. The concept is relatively simple - by rotating the land, you cause the little bulbous creatures to roll from place to place while finding other LocoRoco and heading toward the exit. It's easy to play and wildly addictive, the perfect formula for a classic title.

The franchise has now hit the PlayStation 3 in the form of LocoRoco Cocoreccho! While the PlayStation Store title was initially promoted as an interactive screensaver, it's actually much more of a game than something you use to keep your monitor from burning in. However, it's not all that lengthy. The first time through is very quick, possibly on the order of about 30 minutes for most folks, though the first couple times you finish the game you'll open up new areas that extend its longevity. High scores are the name of the game here, and an online leaderboard will allow you to compare your efforts to others from around the world.

While you twisted the world in the PSP game to get the critters to roll from place to place, things are different on the PlayStation 3. Here, you're in control of some sort of magically hypnotic butterfly, which draws any nearby LocoRoco to it, allowing you to control their direction. Holding down the Circle button will create a circle of influence, and any LocoRoco inside will attempt to get to the butterfly. Tapping Circle makes them try harder and faster, thereby causing them to jump higher and farther, allowing them to reach high objects or clear larger gaps. Aside from these basic controls, you're also able to utilize the Sixaxis' motion controls to tilt some platforms, shake tree branches and a bit more.

All of these concepts work rather well, aside from the fact that the LocoRoco sometimes won't do what you want them to (like clear a gap or reach something). There are plenty of puzzle-esque elements in the floating world that reward you with more LocoRoco. Some platforms and such are hidden or out of the way a bit, so exploring the world and trying a few things here or there will generally reward you with more happy little dudes.

While all of that is cool, there's an issue with having to do a lot of waiting around for the LocoRoco to get to you. For each section of the map, the LocoRoco will go around in a loop and pass by a gate until you decide to close it. You can close the platform leading up to the gate at any time, but the gate won't open until you've collected the requisite number of LocoRoco at the gate. So until you've collected said amount, you need to leave it open so that they'll circle the area so that you can lead them off their path to find other LocoRoco.

The result of this is that you'll do a lot of waiting for the LocoRoco to make their loop and get back to you if you need to gather a large amount of them. If you only need one or two this usually isn't an issue (unless they're all grouped together), but it can be frustrating when you wait to collect a bunch of them, then a number of them don't jump properly or what have you and fall in a gap, forcing you to sit there and wait for them to come around again. This leads to a fair bit of tedium in an otherwise fun, if brief, title.

The use of a fast-forward feature or something along those lines would have helped here a ton, though unfortunately all you can do is sit and wait while twiddling your thumbs.

Closing Comments
LocoRoco Cocoreccho! is a cute and fun title that's unfortunately marred by quite a bit of sitting around and waiting. The puzzle-esque elements are cool, the music and art style are charming and the replayability is decent. However, too much time is spent waiting for the LocoRoco to reach a certain spot, only to sometimes have them fall and force you to wait again.

THIS IS THE BEST GAME I HAVE DOWNLOADED FROM PSN!!! I didn't play the original but this is sheer genius. Admitedly it only cost me 1.99 (pounds) but having played it I would definately pay three times that for it.

It is a valid game in its own right (not just an 'interactive wallpaper '), and has far more replay value than the vast majority of games due to its endearing charm and sense of fun.

The complaints of the reviewer are negated after extensive play as you realise that it is your fault the little fella didn't make the jump due to bad positioning and not putting in quite enough effort into the 'o' button bashing (a dying art revived), you think you've given your all but a superhuman blast will get you there.

The game will take at least 10 hours of play and exploration (it takes more than 2 hours to play your first round with all the unlocked gates) before you feel confident about trying for a leaderboard assault, and many more hours of perfecting before you'll have any impact on it.

You'll also just want to play it again just to hear those fat boys sing.

Also totally digging this game. Whatever "screensaver" BS was out there was just BS. It doesn't turn on by itself, for one, and it just sits there until you do something, for two. It's a full-fledged game, but it sounds as if they were making excuses for it before release.

No need for excuses. I find this thing really fun and addictive, and (coming from not having played previous titles) it has taken me hours just to unlock what obviously is still a small portion of the overall setup. Hours that, by the way, go by without me noticing.

I regret none of my $6.99.

arrrrrrrggggghh! at first i thought this game just looked insanely dumb, but now, after playing it for a few days, i am completely hooked. what the heck is wrong with me?! it is now five in the morning and i -just- managed to tear myself away from my ps3.
also, i think i have gotten permanent brain damage (only temporarily brainwashed if i am lucky) as i even dreamt of those cute, singing, jelly-ish locorocos last night. i cannot get that song out of my head... :( :(

so, with that out of the way, let me continue.
there is a locoroco-type game for the psp also? how would you veterans compare the two?

yup game is awesome....

I would give it 7/10....

Simply because it could've been more PSP-like functions in the game...there should have been a straight, tilt the world with Sixaxis mode--then it would be up there with Stardust in the legendary PSN titles...
