Evilempire@PS3forums:

At ALL the E3 machines that I checked I can confirm this was shown on Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, LittleBigPlanet, PSN High Poker, Assassins Creed, L.A.I.R., Singstar. I can pretty much say, that most of the machines had it and weren't game specific.

I know it means a lot to some people, but that has never been a selling point for me.

I'm more excited about other features we might see in the next firmware update, as the fact of having custom soundtracks means that there's a lot more to it. I'd only use custom soundtracks in a handful of games of genres like racing and purely sandbox titles. Otherwise, it has the potential to destroy the atmosphere of most linear games and I definately don't want that.

I agree with VG, but it will mean I play my ps3 more.
The way my speakers are set up, I can either listen to my PS3 or listen to my PC. I don't like playing games with the sound off but I don't like playing alot of games with their repetative music.
If they let me keep the sound effects but change the music I'll be happy.
And with games I really want to buy coming out soon it couldn't come at a better time

I still want it to come up with XMB when you press the PS button like in the dev kits

Agree. Can you imagine playing games like God of War or Heavenly with anything other than their original orchastrated ST? This feature is great for other genre though. Like Madden, Gran Turismo and Grand Theft. On the other hand, I'm going to try playing GoW's OST over Sigma...

IT would be cool if you could give songs atmosphere tags and it faded your songs in and out of certain games. Logistically it would be hell, and it might not come off but its still a nice idea

Nay, mortals like me have to wait until the firmware comes out. If only I were Phil Harrison. Then I'd be tall and British..and the firmware update would be well within my grasp.

What i find the most interesting is you dont pick the music from the game menu, you pick it from the PS3s menu and so from the XMB.

Haha, what the hell? Phil Harrison is pretty kick ass though, it would be awesome to see him with dual katanas versus Reggie with a bazooka. :matrix:

Man I'm bored. But I've been waiting for this update to play music for a while! This is one of my favorite features on the 360.

Yeah, it's a great feature. Would especially come in handy on those 24 hour endurance races on GT5. :)

Does it really matter if the XMB comes up when you press the PS button, even the XBIT 360 does'nt bring the whole blade system up only a special guide button menu so that looks like a better idea to me.

Bringing up the whole XMB would use WAY to much memory I would rather it use less memory and bring up a quick menu and be able to select custom music (if that's your thing, never done it myself) and access your friends list (that's way more important :-D )

thanks

i pray that this is the real thing. because in my time without my dearly beloved 360(do you believe its still goin to be 3 weeks before i get it back because of this new warranty coming in the day my 360 broke!!) i've been on the computer looking around and the ps3 has pretty much the same things as my 360. but it can also be used as a pc. i love listenin to my music while playing any games. so if this is real the only thing left for me to go against is no rumble. i like rumble.

VG Aficionado
07-19-2007, 06:00 PM
Rumor has it that there's a good chance PS3 will have more advanced rumble tech than other systems by the end of the year. There are many hints pointing at a new controller with more features to be unveiled within two months from now.

I've stopped playing Motorstorm because I'm bored of the music.

VG Aficionado

Yeah, I also find MotorStorm's music more boring than the music in other racing games. That's where I'd appreciate custom tracks.

By the way, will the Home open beta launch next week? I wouldn't expect it this week, but if it happens it might require a firmware update, at least if they plan to give it its very own icon in the XMB as planned at the beginning. Or maybe they delayed it until August or something.

I assume some of the minor delays we're seeing lately are caused by upcoming changes such as price cuts, bundles, potentially important firmware upgrades and a rumble/touchsense-enabled sixaxis. The developers and publishers know in advance and they prefer to wait a bit longer for the best time to release their games and whatnot.

I always thought about this, but yeah, I don't think it can be done, lol! However, if they set it up so that you can make playlists, especially playlists within games, you could do this on your own, which would be nice! On a game like GTA IV, this should be a must. I'd also do it on fighting games, racers and probably even FPSes. But yeah, games like GOW or other adventure games like Uncharted or R&C, I don't think it'd be a good idea to mix their music up.

Also, I think on GTAIV, they should have Niko have an Ipod or soem other sort of mp3 player so that you can still listen to the tunes while he's on his feet instead of just in the car. Someone needs to kick this idea to Rockstar if they haven't thought and planned that out already.

As I find myself just listening to the God of War 2 soundtrack, I really could give a shit about custom soundtracks in games. Games have cool music. At least most of the ones I play.

there are only a few games that will work with customizable music tracks. can you imagine play MGS with the Spice Girls playing in the background! most games are getting dynamic scores now too, which smell and speed up at appropriate moments. if it keeps the 360 fans quiet then it's a good thing, as long as no one uses it.

Yeah, it really only works well with racing games and a few others. I like the immerisve feeling that a games music usually gives. But I remember the days of getting tired of the music in GT and then just turing the music off but leaving the SFX on and then pumping my stereo.

I think it's pretty absurd that you'd only think 360 fans would want this as this has been my desire ever since the PSX had the ability to take the disc out for Ridge Race and put in music cds and still play the game while listening to your own music. (bet everything thinks that M$ invented that shit). Also your comment stating "as long as no one uses it" is pretty moronic, it's not a desired feature for people not to want to use it. B'sides, it's already been stated that plenty of gaming genres could use this option and the option of choice is always a good thing, not something that's useless. Respectively, there are games that probably shouldn't or wouldn't be the same w/o their own soundtracks as well.

Z
07-20-2007, 01:08 AM
well, I hope this is true. PS3 has custom soundtrack since it launched, but just like Box, it is left for the dev's graciousness to add it manually to their individual games. that means we won't see it. ever.
they should've gone with the X2 rout and made it mandatory for every game. hope it will really come to PS3.

This is one of the very few upgrades I wanted for the system when it launched. Now, although I knew it would come eventually, it's great to know that it could likely be the next firmware upgrade. Some titles are in dire need of this.

yeah i have quite enjoyed the music for MS. but for a Pro-sim game it might not be good. i like to listen for every last inch of track/traction/brakin... might not be good for Sim racers

Thanks everyone. My favorite color is definitely the Ceramic White.

The video out quality from UMD is DVD quality and looks very crisp and clean. Glad to see so many of you have your UMD movies. 40cal - 31 UMDs? I’m impressed. That’s a few more than me!

I can’t verify that the ‘your music’ screen is real. It’s obviously not a great shot, and I was at just about every kiosk during E3 and didn’t see anything like that on any unit we had there, and yes, I helped set them up, so I would definitely have seen it. I think it is an artists creative expression for what they want..We will definitley have more info on the firmware updates here very soon.

It'd be cool. The only game I would use it in would probably be Gran Turismo 5. It's definitely a good game to mix around with soundtracks. Most games I like to use the game music because I guess it's often part of the feeling of the game. I'm not going to want to play like Jungle Love or Summer Love or like The Way I Are while I'm playing Killzone or most games for example, but I don't see why I wouldn't try it in GT5 lol. GT5 I bet I would use it a lot actually when/if the feature comes.

@west: Early next week, we’ll have something on the firmware.

Kratos: not sure what the gravatar issue is. if you selected it after determining the image rating, it should sync with the email you have used to register for your comments here.

The new banner is now in rotation with the others. We’ll continue to add these types of banners as time goes on and keep them fresh.

I’ll check into why the press conference hasn’t hit PSN yet.

and MotorStorm's soundtrack is extremely annoying and loud. I mute it all the way. it would be nice to put something else playing with that.
