Thats right boys go to Newegg for the deals I just purchased another Q6600 for less than 300 usd.
Pc gaming is quickly becoming extremely affordable (or at least more so than in my memory). One could put together a very capable gaming pc for around 1000usd.

Shit that is a good price, i am jealous.
Wait, you got "another" one???? Can i have your old one? ;)
I would love to try my luck with an SMP kernel on that mother, it would scream.

Damn Intel.
Someone lit a fire under their asses last year it seems. I paid $315.00 for E6600 last November and now I can get a Q6600 for even less.
They seem to be undermining every move AMD makes these days whether it be price or performance.....or both at the same time.

I'm not as techy when it comes to my laptop as I am my desktop so Nehalem has my attention the most.

I agree, but they both can be hard, and annoying at times. I just hope they hurry up with penryn, i want a lappy now!

No harder than following any other PC part or even gaming for that matter.

I don't know man, RAM and motherboards and GPU's and HDD's are much easier to follow then CPU's IMO.
And that's only including intel!
Viper

Hell, maybe I just read a lot so I don't notice the difficulty in following them.

Ah what great news! Once I get some cash, it's a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM for me! This news came at the right time haha.

Just buy a whole god damn new PC man! your system is so old if you were not using Gentoo you would be throwing out the window on a daily basis!
What kind o' chip you got in there? a dorito?
Khaos
07-22-2007, 08:21 AM
The motherboard is a SiS something, AMD Duron 1ghz CPU, and pc133 1gb memory. Rofl. So basically a dorito.
The graphics card and other parts are much newer though. My whole plan was to slowly rebuild/upgrade everything, and the mobo/CPU/RAM is the last thing I have to do.

yeah, you have the new GPU (that didn't work well with your PSU, JUST AS I THOUGHT!) hahaha

Its remarkable the performance one can get in comparison to dollar amount these days. Everything from motherboards, ram, to cpus are becoming very affordable, although gpus and power supplys are still somewhat pricey.

What makes these better on a price/performance scale is how overclockable they are. Core 2 Duos are an overclockers wet dream and even those with very little knowledge of overclocking can safely overclock them without adding any extra cooling hardware or fans.
Toms Hardware just took two PC's they built, a low end PC and a high end PC, and matched them against a $6,000.00 pre-overclocked monster from Dell.
Once they overcloked the low end PC it was matching the the Dell in almost everything. When the overclocked their higher end PC, it crushed it.
The Low end had an average 75% increase in performance.
The high end had an average 30% increase in performance.

I'm upset at myself. I know so much more about computers now then I did a year ago...unfortunately I was trigger happy and my parent's were paying so I got a Dell XPS 400 last year that is good, but I want so badly to build a computer right now...
I guess I will upgrade my 7800GTX in the fall and see where I go from there...

build a system with what you would like to buy and post it here, we can all contribute and help you out :)
It is really insane what you can do with the core 2 quad (how ironic is that name?) and some water cooling. I mean, shit, last year you couldn't get half as far with twice the overclocking potential.

How long did it take last time for the new processors to hit the retail channels? I'm waiting for the E6x50 series.
Edit: It looks like they hit today on NewEgg and ZipZoomFly. They're $20-40 over ku price but I can wait another week or two for prices to stabilize.

Urgh, I love AMD, but the Intel line is looking great. The only gripe I have with getting an X2 6000+ like I was planning is that A) its 125W B)90nm. *thinks good thoughts of the future*
I have a couple months at least to look this over and see if I will be forced to switch to Intel, haha.

Primarily depends on how long intel is strutting their line. AMD is really losing ground in the home user market and there doesnt seem to be any hopes of an efficient or powerful rival to the C2D series and beyond.
But I agree that given Intel's history they arent likely to keep up this breakneck pace.
Viper

Considering that I can only recall Intel losing the market once, to AMD, it's more likely they won't be giving up the share later on either. It's not like they've traded back and forth with other chip makers in the industry.
They faltered on the Pentium 4, got smart as to how they got beat and are now beating AMD with the very concept AMD initially used to beat Intel.....efficiency per clock vs high clock speeds.
Given the current 'known' pipeline of products, AMD will stay in Intel's shadow again for a while.

Luckily I don't care enough to be called a 'fanboy', haha. Looking at everything currently, if I had cash now, I would get myself the E6600.

I was going to wait for a Mac Pro but Apple kept me waiting for too long for a refresh. I'd have to keep waiting until August but even so it's EXPENSIVE.
I'm just going to build a Core 2 gaming rig and get a MacBook when Leopard comes out. I have 3 backup copies of my Mac data. I just want to game!

I think we should wait and see if they aren't just clearing stock.
Because that makes it no longer a price cut.
(I might get a new laptop, if it's under two grand and I'd decided to destroy my savings for a little more speed....)

Lmao, try saying that in the Sony boards.
Even the new chips that came out are under the expected pricing structure so they've chopped some price here. $266 for a quad core? Dayum.

true dat, it's making my poor little X2 4200+ look absolutely fucking crapstatic in comparison. (and i love the freaking thing).
