According to Sony Computer Entertainment America's internal tracking, PS3 sales increased by more than 135 percent at the company's top five retailers since the new $499 price was introduced back on July 9. Furthermore, during this two-week period, total PlayStation hardware sales increased by 161 percent, software increased by 15 percent and peripherals by 60 percent

I think this was posted last week but I can't find it right now.

PS3 still holding on to number 2 at Amazon even this long after the initial price cut announcement.

Its not just the price drop but the mass marketing of it as well. You see flyers and brochures, adds in the newspaper, etc all showcasing the PS3.

Regardless good news on the sales front.

Impressive. Though i do see it advertised alot. Most retailers seem to be presenting it as a sale. Like Sony didnt discount them themselves.

Not to mention, EB has 20gb model for $449.
My prediction for next month 195k, which is the minimum PS3 should be selling monthly.

Well if they sold 98K in June times 1.35 (135%) that = 132K in July

Sony needs to rip their heads out of their asses, or they must be confident that in the long run they will overtake the competition.

June was a 5 week month as well for NPD. Although the 135% figure only relates to about 3 weeks. Next NPD should be interesting given the presence of E3 and MS's hardware issue this could be the first time we see the PS3 outsell the 360 in NA.

Um, I think %135 percent means (2.35*old number) not (1.35*old number).

Try saying this in english. "PS3 sales increased by %35." versus "PS3 sales increased by %135".

so that's 230.3K

edit: Now if we instead said "PS3 sales are %135 of what they were, then it would of have been (1.35*old number)..

gozirah you beat me to it. You are right about the calculation and ddaryl is a good example why you should never give sales growth as a percentage once it passes a 100%. Too many people get confused.

135% of their sales rate would give July 188,000 in sales.

It will be interesting to see who wins this holiday season, because the PS3 will finally have several AAA titles hit and the 360 will have their big gun Halo 3 hit the streets... I think ultimately the Wii will sell the most units, but I think we can all agree the Wii is in a category of it's own.

If the PS3 can close ground on the 360 it could help the PS3 get more love from 3rd party publishers. Also, it's a great move by Sony to help developers maximize the UE3 engine since it's the middleware of choice for next-gen developement.

I honestly don't expect PS3 to start to really take off until early 08...But the the overall situation of PS3 will improve significantly later this year.

08 belongs to Sony--Me happy I bought PS3:pleased:

Still I'd take HS/Unreal/Warhawk/Uncharted/Ratchet over Halo/Mass Effect/Bioshock/Blue Dragon/LO any day of the week...

So, while they might now Own 07 this year, still a good PS3 time...

This FALL and into the HOLIDAY will be a noticeable "turnaround" for Sony.

Lair
Warhawk
Heavenly Sword
Little Big Planet
Pain
Ratchet and Clank
Uncharted
SOCOM
etc. etc. etc.

I think they'll exhaust 60GB, drop the price of the 80GB(with one SKU in the US), and sell a wide variety of bundles. Basically, more of the same(even though some think they are failing) except with more games..... :duh:

[EDIT] I forgot to mention Immersion Touch Sense Technology.

For the past 2 weeks every retail outlet that has a magazine in the Sunday paper has PS3 adds dedicated to an entire page and completly seem to be ignoring the 360. Good for the PS3 but sucks for the 360 they should give both face time.

Not good enough. Going from 90k month to roughly 180k is not the biggest jump. They need a BIG increase to make up the gap. But it's an improvement

frosty
07-24-2007, 05:38 AM
It is a big jump considering we're not in the biggest sales period for electronic gaming. If we were near the end of the year it wouldn't be much, but for July it's pretty damn good, especially if they can keep the momentum going. With games/demos like lair and heavenly sword launching, word will spread and I think the sales will at least keep their pace if not increase in the next month or so.

dnpmakkah
07-24-2007, 05:51 AM
An increase of 135% is great even though the actual number when released come July NPD might not sound that big, overall an increase of that amount is good. Even with a $100 price drop we have to realize that it's still the most expensive console around coming in at $500 bucks. Sony has brand loyal but we need to be realistic here if it comes in at around 180K or more next month that is good. Baby steps man...baby steps.

Viper
07-24-2007, 06:03 AM
Baby steps....ok, any damn steps in the right direction, are good but Sony has to be careful if others are still taking giant leaps.

At some point, they just got to blow the roof off this mutha fucka.

dnpmakkah
07-24-2007, 06:50 AM
At this point they are the first company to offer a price cut...$100 at that. I don't think there is anything else they can do right now. They were already losing money on each system sold and I'd imagine a price cut didn't help. Sony is trying the best they can given the fact the console is already done with and manufactored. The competition is taking giants leaps forward (yes) but Sony really can't do much else this quickly.

If the price drop was any bigger they would go into a bigger hole I'd imagine and I doubt Sony could with stand a loss like Microsoft did with the original Xbox. At this point I'm sure they are thinking long term and can't jump the gun just because the other consoles are starting strong out the gate.

I personally think the blog has had a big hand in Sony's improved image lately. With the Playstation.Blog, they've been a lot more in tune with what people are saying and there's been a really sharp decline in rumors and how far they get IMO. There's been a lot more media released on these upcoming games, interviews, updates on firmware, store update information, etc. Information was one of the key things Sony needed to start giving out and misinformation was one of PS3's biggest sore spots (once again, IMO), and the blog has done a lot to improve Sony's outlook and their image to both newcomers and Sony loyalists alike.

gozirah you beat me to it. You are right about the calculation and ddaryl is a good example why you should never give sales growth as a percentage once it passes a 100%. Too many people get confused.

It's really not that difficult of a concept to be honest. If you increase by 5%, that's 5% of what you had on top of what you had before. Same deal with 135%. It's not that complicated lol.

^Definitely, for the internet related market or whatever it's called, I think it was a great move as well.

If the PS3 can close ground on the 360 it could help the PS3 get more love from 3rd party publishers. Also, it's a great move by Sony to help developers maximize the UE3 engine since it's the middleware of choice for next-gen developement.

The most exciting thing is that publishers know the PS3 is going to take a bit to reach the top, but it's clear that those same publishers are still willing to give the PS3 love, even exclusive and timed exclusive love, that's what's truly amazing. I think publishers also realise that if the PS3 wins out in the end it will provide the best business model for them to thrive the most. Especially for the current market leaders in publishing like EA or Square or Konami and whatnot who thrived last gen. I think they see the PS3 as the oppurtunity to relive the PS2 days of insane success again, but squared with the crazy online capabilities the PS3 offers now.

Maybe some are still hesitant, but they were far more hesitant before now. It's almost like the PS3 was reborn publically after a lot of latest announcements were revealed. It probably happened over a bit longer time, but now they're telling us about it. :)
