Rumor: Sony to Buy R*?

Sometimes the most unexpected news will hit you in the oddest places. That was the case tonight as we sat merrily eating dinner with developers and journalists from around the industry at the Tengu Restaurant in Westwood, California.

We were coming from a joint Sony, Activision event there in Southern California, when we were told something we definitely weren't ready for.

The discussion at Tengu was fairly simple in its scope: various sources in the press and development team state that Sony is looking to take Rockstar “under their wings”. While we learned that any agreement Sony and Take Two entered into would not affect the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV, such an agreement would presumably affect any future releases from Rockstar, including the new franchise Sony has been discussing and L.A. Noire, which looks likely to be a PS3 exclusive at this point as well.

Rockstar, which is currently a part of Take Two Interactive, has produced several blockbuster franchises, including the Grand Theft Auto series of games, Manhunt and Bully. The studio has become famous for both the games it produces and the controversy surrounding their production. Rockstar has earned itself a reputation however as a developer which is focused on making excellent games, something that many of the studios that make up Sony World Wide Studios are known for.

As with any news this interesting, we must affirm that we trust our sources, but that our sources do not constitute an official confirmation. PSU will report back to all of you when we have more.

I don't know, it would still be a rather good acquisition for Sony. Even though their "good" name has been somewhat scarred by the recent events, it's all publicity, and if Sony purchases them, they can very easily turn around any negative effects of it and just reap the benefits of the publicity, not to mention more than make up for the price they paid.

Of course, I don't want them to do it, but from their standpoint it wouldn't be as dumb as it sounds.

Microsoft doesn't usually step in unless there is a fire sale (e.g. 3DO).

Microsoft hasn't stepped in with Ubisoft practically being bought by EA.

Microsoft didn't step in with Sega / Sammy merger.

Microsoft didn't help out with the Bioware / Pandemic joining.

Microsoft is at a position right now where they are working with 3rd Party developers/pubs to make them want to work with Microsoft and their games on the Xbox platform -- rather than buying them out and forcing them to.

Lionhead was their last purchase (outside of Massive) and if Microsoft is to try and get assets next, it would probably be with Big Huge Games, Remedy Entertainment, Q Entertainment, From Software, etc.

Another situation is when a developer is going over-under and look for Microsoft to rescue them -- which is what Silicon Knights may need with all this talk about lawsuits.

To be honest, there is no future proof tech. It's a buzzword to make consumers feel confident they've bought something with long value.

Agreed to a degree. Depends on the context. If you simply mean thr next generation of home consoles, it has a valid case. If you mean next generation gaming then yeah, that's pointless.

Perhaps future resistant is a better suited term? Either way, both next gen and future proof have been bullshit to one console or another. PS3 is by far the most "future proof" console, even though some PC rigs can already top it's performance from a graphics standpoint. So much for future proof. Same for Wii and "next gen" (or DS for that matter) going by the definition most assign to that term (better in every way by a good margin).

Anyway, I don't see R* suffering if they were a part of SCEWWS. Their install base may shrink a bit in the short term, but Sony has plenty of cash to keep them afloat if it were true until the install base grew a bit more. Also you need to factor in PSP titles into that equasion as well.

They are looking to buy Blizzard and Valve, then they are going to run their own PC development company to compete against Microsoft with an alliance with Mac.

So there you have it, Sony isn't buying Rockstar; they are buying Valve and Blizzard and then working in unison with Apple to run PCs to the ground.

Let me just say this.

I am sure Sony and Microsoft would love to buy R*. Is it plausible? Yeah, they both have the money to do so.

Though, in all reality, the source (PSU) is just blowing smoke up everybody's butt. They are like that little kid in the store that keeps rambling on about having an uncle that knows Bill Gates and Donald Trump. They aren't reliable and the information they are providing is horse shit.

Now, lets say they were able to narrow it down more -- provide more definite information then yeah, it's likely that they could have some source they got it from.

But, this crap that they heard it at dinner or whatever, that's unlikely and out of reason.

For me to have a little more faith in their news they would have to provide details that shows they know what they are talking. They did none of that and left it to the reader to speculate and draw attention to their site. All they have to draw on is some stupid dinner with no quotes, no sources named, no time of date, and no future information on when it could be revealed.

My problem is I don't even see why Sony would need Rockstar since they only got after those developers cheap enough to buy but with talent rather than those with a single successful hit.

But now I'm wondering why Rockstar would even consider making anything exclusive for the platform with the position they are in.

I don't think it's necessarily going down hill so much as that they haven't fundamentall altered the way the game works since GTAIII, and even then most of the changes stemmed from the whole "OH EM GEE, THREE-DEE!!!!" thing.

I liked San Andreas the most -- it had a really cool story, I actually liked the characters and related to them (never came close in 3 or VC), I thought the graphics were amazing, and there was tons of great content there and plenty of new stuff, specifically the new aiming & swimming abilities were very VERY welcome :-D

It would be the best move of the generation for Sony IMO. If they already made games that were pushing the system as a third party I could see them making even better games when dedicated to one system. On my Sandwiches, onyl the good stuff gets eaten, like Ham, Salami, Cheese, Salad, Pickles and some variatons with Feta Cheese (a little greek) or Chili Beans (a bit mexican) and Tabasco.


The last link provided states, that "Sony takes R* under its wing". This can be interpreted manifold. Most likely is second party, as was stated. Does this make sense? I don't know, to be honest, since Sony already has its own GTA competition in London. Most other R* franchises aren't as well received as GTA (I would welcome them, dropping Manhunt altogether). Maybe they are very confident in their new unannounced IP, that they are willing to take the risk to further their admission to R*.
