PSP Not a Worry? April 27, 2004

by: Matt Kowalewski

Investors with stock in Nintendo are gaining confidence that the PSP will not eat much into Ninty's 95% handheld domination.

Bloomberg is recieving reports out of Japan that Nintendo investors are becoming convinced that Sony's PSP is not going to factor much on the handheld scene, at least not for the general gamer. Nintendo's stocks dropped an initial 19% after the announcement of the PSP last May, but has since increased 39%.

"Sony's PSP is more directly targeted at adults," said Takashi Okatani, a senior analyst at Shinko Investment Trust Management Co. in Tokyo, "That's better understood now."
Peter Boardman, a fund manager at NWQ Investment in Los Angeles, feels that "Nintendo's strategy is good." Boardman is referring to the large price differences between the two systems.

"Tokyo-based Sony may sell the PSP, which will include music and video features as well as games, for between $250 and $400," said Boardman. As we all know, the GBA sells for about 99$ in the US as of now, and that price could still come down.

The report ended with a quote from Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo's spokeswoman in Redmond, Washington: "Everything Sony's done, they've done well."

Will the PSP only garner to adults with more expensive tastes? If so, that means Nintendo's market share will be relatively unshaken.

The aticle in one way does make sense, but nothing can be guranteed until the PSP comes out, the first week sales will most probably show how well will it do, the same way the N-gage sales showed how bad it did and how it has been no competition for the GBA.

Horray for Nintendo. Boo for Sony.

"As such, there is likely to be some cross-over between the PSP and Nintendo GBA/DS markets, but, analysts seem to believe, not enough to define them as directly competing platforms."

"a lot more willing to pay $99 than $400", NWQ Investment fund manager Peter Boardman who believes that the PSP will be sold at a far higher price point than the DS.

Can I get an 'I told you so' to all the naysayers out there?
I've been trying to tell you but NOOOoo....don't want to tlisten to me.

Well i still think the PSP will take up like 10 percent of the market share though.

Perhaps it can and probably will but do you think Nintendo and share holders are worried about 10%?

I ask this same question regarding MS losing billions a year on Xbox and boxboys keep telling me they aren't worried.

I think the price is going to be a major downfall and develoeprs will begin to see it quickly since they are used to GBA like sales figures and they will not be getting them on PSP.

Will this be another failed attempt at the "coupe de etat" for nintendo's handheld world order. Time will tell. If not the sales will.

I think the PSP will succeed. But Nintendo will be ahead for this generation anyway for the handhelds. Sometime it will change.

I don't think it's possible to say for sure, not at least until Sony confirms an official price for the PSP.

yep. you guys remember that PSX? (the near $1000 USD Playstation 2/home entertainment hybrid) it sold nearly 100 000 systems in japan. 100 000 is a lot for something that price. in japan, especially where ps2's are more than gba's but it still sells more than gba's sometimes, PSP will do good. Everywhere else? have no idea.
Just one question; Nintendo has a 95% share in handhelds, what has the other 5%?
N gage? or the older sysems + n gage? jus curious..

I think the PSP will have a decent impact. I think it will be based around price.

IT may have the same impact that ps1/ps2 had. They are targeted for adults and nintendo targets all, but what do most kids want? What ever is targeted for adults is what they want. Nintendo better wise up or they will lose the hand held market to sony as well. God i hope not because i love nintendo. but sony has its eye on the target. Nintendo seems to be slipping. And in advance, no, i dont think the sky is falling on nintendo. I just can imagine sony dominating handhelds as well.

Merging this with the thread in General Consoles.

Sorry for the confusing posts.

Nintendo is going to crush this system so bad. A library of 4,000 games against thirty? Hmm....

Overpriced consoles are no match for humanity's constant struggle to be cool. If the PSP can achieve this "cool" image (which it probably will), I have no doubt that it will sell decently, regardless of price.

i dont think it will be a failure, like the overpriced silver taco, but i dont think it will be successful enough to take much of the market. like has been said in the thread(s) b4.

250 Wohooo PSP would own!

Seriously thats Nintendo's stand on the console race. Which has put them in the dog house, and sony in the winning chair.

I know more Teenagers/Adults that play gameboy advanced then children. I don't think there putting that in count. (I'm one of them)
