um, the internet.......
(or the store)
Pick a flavor, go to said companies site and download the iso images.
If you require further instructions, post more details.

lol. I knew to download something. I knew to find a site to something..
I figured I'd get one type and someone would tell me I was an idiot. Going after PCLinux now..

Fedora 7 DVD iso image is my recommendation.
(if you have a DVD burner)
That or Ubuntu, but its your call, they all "work." ;-]

Doing some research.. I have a feeling I'll be checking out a lot of different ones to see what fits.. intriguing.
So I'm downloading one.. which is going to take me another two hours.. it's a .iso file... so when that's done.. how do I go about that? Will it just open like a file? Burn it onto a cd? Hmn?
Coded-Dude
08-21-2007, 01:35 AM
burn it to cd/dvd(whichever you downloaded) as an iso image......
NOTE: if you download the CD iso files, you will need to download all of them
(usually there are 4 or 5 total)

lol. I'm a pain in the ass, aren't I?
I just downloaded one file. The main file.. it's a almost 700mb file. It's downloading pclinuxos-2007.iso
That is all that was needed to download. When that goes... just burn it to a cd?
Coded-Dude
08-21-2007, 01:41 AM
what burning utility/program are you using?
ScratchedAt
08-21-2007, 01:44 AM
This is all mind-blowing to me. I love it.
I haven't had to use a burn program at all yet. I'm still downloading the file.
Coded-Dude
08-21-2007, 01:47 AM
so you don't have a cd burner and/or software, or you just haven't used it in ages?
"burning iso cd images on windows"
Google that and read.....I don't have time to explain the ins/outs of cd burning today.
Good Luck as I am signing off for the evening(more than likely).

Keep in mind that if you dislike the first distro you try, try another and don't assume that they all suffer the same shortcomings. My first experience was bad (Lycoris Linux which I do not think exists anymore) and it nearly kept me from coming back.

Congrats on making the first (and most difficult step)!
After the .iso file id downloaded, you will need to burn it to a CD as an "image file", this is different to burning a data cd. A good free cd burner program is cdburnerxp pro (it's free, even though it says "pro"). It should have an option like "burn image to disc" or "burn cd image" etc. After that is done all you need to do is reboot your machine with the CD in the drive.
When your computer reboots you need to enter the BIOS to change the boot order from the HDD to CD drive. You should already know how to do this i am assuming. When you reboot again your computer should boot into pclinuxos.

That or Ubuntu, but its your call, they all "work." ;-]Could you do a comparison of Fedora and Ubuntu? I'll make a new thread to list some of Ubuntu features and you can add....
What say you?

Fedora is a slightly more intermediate distro then ubuntu. It is a testing ground for Red Hat enterprise desktop. It uses RPM's for package management (contrasting to ubuntu's DPKG) and yum as it's updater (compared with ubuntu's apt-get/aptitude).
Fedora uses similar graphical tools to ubuntu in almost all areas, they each come with their own unique apps and installed apps. They both use GNOME as their desktop environment by default and include different themes and artwork. They both use similar kernels but with differing optimisations and configurations.

I'm running F7 with E17 desktop(and Entrance login manager), and I'm pretty sure you can now choose which package utility you prefer.(apt-get or yum). Anywho, Garf is right, its slighty more cutting edge and intermediate, but very stable if you don't go with the latest(fedora core 6 is also a good choice). I also like SuSE due to its all in one administrative tool(YaST), which makes things easier when trying to configure stuff, but some people disagree.

Sorry for high jacking the thread a bit, but the title sais Linux Questions.
So here's mine
What happens when i install any Linux distro with all the windows programs? Can i still run them under linux? Or do have to get a Windows emulator?
I looked on PCLinuxOS, but they don't mention anything about it.
I got one of those first Macbooks where i can use parallels to switch to Windows XP, but it's still an emulator and it requires a lot of my processor to run.

you can run windows applications on linux through a program called wine, which may or may not be installed by default. It is new tech and may not work for all applications but it is very very cool.
Or you could run virtual box or vmware and emulate the windows system.

I run Windows XP Media Center through vmware, which I love. I don't use it often (thank God) but when I must, it is extremely conveinant. Windows in a window. Vmware costs money though. Qemu is the free alternative, but isn't as fast.
Wine is still technically a beta (0.9.44 is the latest version). But it works well for simple applications. I love uTorrent's simplicity and speed, and run that through Wine. It has only crashed like once or twice so far for me.
Difference is that vmware and qemu are programs that emulate a working PC system and run the full Windows OS (or any OS, since it emulates a machine and not an OS) in a window. So in that window, you have yoru Windows desktop, etc. Wine just allows Windows binaries to run as if they were Linux binaries.

You can get VMWare Server Edition (which is able to create virtual machines from ISOs/actual cds) for free. Just have to register, then they email you a serial. Costs nothing except an email or two a month from them. link to download. (http://www.vmware.com/download/server/)

Wine is just a compatibility layer running above the kernel. In some cases it can show greater performance then windows itself.
But yeah, it's a beta. But they say they may never reach a 1.0 release as that would require perfect 100 percent compatibility with all windows applications and games.
But they are getting there, Even bioshock comes within a whisker of running under wine. Call of duty 2 runs perfectly.

that's because you are using beryl and not the newly merged beryl+compiz (compiz fusion).
don't worry, gutsy gibbon will be out in Oct with it installed.

new version of ubuntu, comes out on the 18th of october.
comes with:
*compiz-fusion
*A new "appearances" config tool to provide a central place to make changes like resolution, wallpaper, fonts, theme etc.
*xorg 7.3 (with bulletproof X) - so that if your graphics card driver breaks you will not go to a command line, instead default VESA settings will be used and a wizzard will allow you to fix the issue.
*portions of KDE4
*kernel 2.6.22 (i think, may be 2.6.23)
and a few others.

KDE4!
I really need to see if they're still shooting for an October release. Based on lack of hearing anything, I fear it's been pushed back.
Garfunkel

it's pushed back till december i think. But i wanted it to be, i would rather it be stable and finished and polished then be rushed. Wise move.
But i can't get the new beta's to work apt-get complains about a HUGE dependency issue, one of those annoying round-about ones, i can't be bothered finding the issue so i'm just gonna leave it for now

I hate those. They're usually easier to fix on Gentoo though. Just emerge one with no use flags set, then the other, then set the use flags you want and re-emerge both.
The revised release schedule looks like this:
October, 2nd: KDE 4.0 Beta 3
October, 19th: Total Release Freeze, only critical bugfixes are allowed to get in. If in doubt, ask the release coordinator.
October, 30th: KDE 4.0 Release Candidate 1
November, 14th: KDE 4.0 Release Candidate 2
December, 11th: KDE 4.0
Shucks.
I may have to play around with beta 2 now, though.
Garfunkel
09-14-2007, 07:33 AM
yeah, i'll give it a go later on the opensuse disk. Last beta was too unstable for me to really get much out of it. Nothing really worked.
