1 Million in the UK in 38 weeks

The sales records continue to mount up. The latest; fastest to 1 million sold in the UK ever.....and by a wide margin. It took 50 weeks for the PS2 and 60 weeks for the X360.

Chart Tracks Yarnton suggests that high demand in the usually slow UK period has contributed to the staggering sales.

I won't second that statement until I see it keeping the same pace this time next year. Not saying it won't, God knows Wii hasn't been short on surprising sales performances in the past, but I gotta give some time for the novelty to wear off before agreeing.

We're coming up on a year now, and the damn machine is still selling out worldwide. I think we can asume that the Wii is selling on more than just novelty at this point.

Ah, Frosty. When are you going to realize there is no novelty factor involved? If PS3 or X360 had this kind of sales could we chalk that up to novelty factor as well?

People simply want something different. Drama, comedy, horror, action, etc....most forms of entertainment have varying degrees of options whereas video games are inherently limited to a virtual replication of everything around itself. When something different finally comes along, it's refreshing for many people.

Novelty would only be a factor if the system were static and unchanging but of course as with all games systems it gets new games and new reasons to hold attention as we get further into the life cycle we know the support will grow dramatically.

While I can respect your cynicism I just don't think it's all that warranted anymore.




PS: With Euro and Japanese sales this week, it will cross 11 million.
