RE4 smashes Capcom expectations

Capcom had originally expected sales of the Wii-fied version of RE4 to sell 450,000 copies worldwide by fiscal year end next March.


"In light of specific details on the title, Capcom nonetheless confirmed that sales of its first Wii title, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, have surpassed 750,000 worldwide as the Japanese publisher continues to strengthen its commitment to Nintendo's platform."

It was on PS2 and even with 5 times the userbase it didn't sell much more than GC so it's really hard to say if it sold better on GC it would sell less here.

In fact, I'm willing to bet the opposite as a large number of RE4 Wii owners also owned the GC edition.

people aren't just buying it because they missed it on GC but because of the new motion control and PS2 added content......and it's cheap.

That's something probably all of us have shaken our heads about. Capcom whores out franchises like no one else....SE and Nintendo included. What are we at now, Megaman's 60th game I believe?

When they made RE4 on PS2 they added the new content and GC owners were left out. This was a chance to get that content out to a similar fanbase, test out the motion controls and made a quick buck.

Few people realize it as a test bed game for Capcom's future titles using motion control. Better to toss out a quickly made game to get the hang of motion control development than sink a massive budget into a game and not quite have the controls just right (See Lair).

I also still haven't beaten Paper Mario, Lost Planet, and Bioshock... AND my brother just got Metroid Prime 3. Man I hate school.

I know it would have to be stripped down a lot, but if it looks as good as RE4, then it would still look great.

They'd basically have to make the game again from scratch for Wii. All textures redrawn, geometry redesigned, etc...

I agree but I also suspect future mainstream RE titles will make their way to Wii now as well. Capcom didn't have much faith in Wii at first (as with most developers) and they weren't familiar yet with Wii controls. Both problems have been alleviated.

They'd basically have to make the game again from scratch for Wii. All textures redrawn, geometry redesigned, etc...I know that. But theoretically, they could get that done pretty quickly if they used the RE4 engine and designed new locals and characters based on that.

I doubt they'd do it though. Even with the engine pre-made, it would still take at least a year and a half to get something of decent quality out.

If I was to be buying Resident Evil 4 on the Wii it wouldn't be because of the controls. I would be buying it since i missed out on the PS2/Cube version though I do have the Cube version, just no time to play it.

oh....and I bought RE4 on GC and Wii....it was just that good I couldn't not have it for my collection of games!....I am weird like that.

maybe this will show Capcom that they really should have been thinking about a RE5 Wii version from the get go.... instead of this light-gun business....

I am just not sure yet if Umbrella Chronicles will have enough variety to warrant a purchase.... I usually find most light gun games a bit boring....as you mostly just point....and shoot....... go figure.

oh...who am I kidding... I love the franchise too much to not buy it anyway.

if Capcom see a possibility of good profits in bringing RE5 to Wii then they'll hopefully do it.

if they start now they may even be able to get it out in time with or shortly after the PS3/360 versions.

anyhoo. pretty good sales for RE4 Wii. i was hoping Capcom would give us a limited edition controller like the Chainsaws for GC and PS2. would have been sweet.

This is awesome news. Capcom is just gonna bring more stuff to Nintendo now.

And I guess it would be easier to make RE5 for Wii than make a brand new game because they've already got the story and levels designed, they'd just have to remake everything. It beats starting from scratch.

But then they might just make a brand new game with less money than it costs to give RE5 a makeover.

For like that week, maybe. But RE4 being a favorite of mine, I was highly disappointed in the Wii version. It's one game I preferred the GC controls to the Wiimote. I feel like there's nothing to buy right now, personally.

I havnt tried gc control option cus i like the wiimote, it just takes quiiiiiiiiiite some time to get used to

i havnt played the game at all though interestingly enough...i was away in the summer so i bought it, played it once but never got anywhere

If RE5 for the X360 and PS3 doesnt do the numbers other games do you can bet their guna find a way to rework RE5 to work on the Wii. They retooled RE4 massively to work on the PS2 and it ran decently. Granted it would be a complete rebuild but money comes first any more.
Who knows maybe RE:UC will kick complete ass and warrent them to do the RE5 thing, who knows.
