Hirai: Devs Should Utilize PS3’s Unique Features
By Tom Ivan Print | Send to a friend | Email the editor
While Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has acknowledged that high development costs are driving the creation cross-platform games, he has urged developers to make the most of individual consoles’ unique features.

ImageSpeaking in an interview with Japanese website ITMedia +D Games, translated by Develop, Hirai said that developers should make the most of the resources at their disposal, as opposed to standardizing games across different platforms.

“When you consider the cost of developing on today’s platforms, I think it’s a logical progression that they’re all thinking of making their games cross-platform,” Hirai said of third party developers.

“But I think it’s important that third parties use the unique characteristics of the platform to add a little bit of extra flavour to their games. For example, with the PS3, you’ve got the Sixaxis controller, or you could utilise the extra capacity provided by Blu-ray to add more levels, put on interviews with the developers or have your videos able to play in 1080p. I think it’s really important that we talk with third party developers so that they can have these interesting extras in the PlayStation 3 version.”

Hirai also stated in the interview that SCE wouldn’t lose focus of the Japanese market because of the sheer scale of the Western market.

“Sony Worldwide Studios has three pillars – Europe, America and Japan… Just because the foreign market is bigger than the domestic one, we don’t intend to take strategy of just making what would have been considered previously as ‘Western games’ and saying ‘We’ve got no choice but to do this’ to our Japanese users. If we did that, there’d be no point in having the Japan Studio

Blu Ray capacity is obvious, but using the processors and the architecture is much more important. Really, 1080p support is negligible, at best.

As some game developers reportedly continue to struggle working with PS3, comments made by Sony Computer Entertainment's president, Kaz Hirai, in the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine suggest that the Sony boss is happy that developing for the machine is proving to be a headache for some coders.

"If you look back at the commentary we received when we launched PS2, there was a lot of talk to the effect that 'It's very difficult to program for' and 'It's easier on a Dreamcast'. It's happened before," Hirai told OPM, acknowledging that PS3 is a more complex animal for developers to work with compared to its rivals. "If they came back and told me, 'PS3? We can do this in a heartbeat,' that would be worrying because what it is telling me is that we're not pushing the envelope from a technology standpoint."

Hirai also commented that gamers would have quite a wait before they could really experience the benefit of PS3's envelope pushing techno-gubbins: "The power that we've packed into PS3 will really manifest itself in software titles that come up four, five or six years down the line."

It's all been said before...

I agree the PS3 power is not truly being tapped, but the advantage the PS2 had was huge marketshare. When you have an incredible marketshare lead it makes developers take the time to truly master the platform. Currently only 1st/2nd party developers are putting the time and effort into PS3 development.
(i.e. the Madden 08 debacle...) This trend has to change for us to see huge advances on the PS3 by 3rd party developers.

*This has all been discussed before so we are beating a dead horse...*

*sigh*

Just wait........

But yeah I'm happy it's difficult, just shows there is much more to come.
I got the feeling we've already seen the best of X360 in terms of gameplay.
Mostly just prettier looking old games.

Same can't be said about the PS3 because MotorStrom alone was awesome, it was such a 'breathing environment'.

I can't believe MotorStorm is still the best example of PS3s power....Hurry you lazy bastards.

I wouldn't mind if ea gave a serious explanation besides their current one "because its so hard"

^ Sony stepped up and worked directly with Epic to get UE3 running properly on the PS3. It would be unrealistic to expect Sony to work with every 3rd party developer to get the most out of their ports/titles on the PS3...

I'm not sure with every one of them, but Sony's been sending software engineers in the last months to many 3rd party developers. Besides, UT3 was just a single example, as there are more of them although it's probably the easiest choice given that it'll be released in two months.

Personally i don't like the wait 5 years to see what your PS3 can do comment.
The other consoles are showing us here and now and technology cycles are moving faster and faster.

I think Epic gave UT3 limited exclusivity to PS3 so that the Sony guys would help them with UE3. Especially after the lawsuit by Silicon Knights.
It seams Epics PS3 tech support for UE3 has been terrible.

If I was in charge of Sony that's exactly what I'd be doing.

GC has a similar issue with Factor 5's launch title Rogue Squadron II being the showpiece for a long time.

Some games just tap the system incredibly well right out of the gate.
