Very good if true
Much more palatable price in general, Hi Def enthusiasts would be insane to skip a price like this, for gamers it’s a no brainier situation 40gig is plenty good esp with the easy HDD upgrade path PS3 owners face
and with a Blue ray incentive to boot, I wonder if this a knee jerk reaction to the Chinese plan to adopt HD-DVD?

Would be great, but it doesn't make much sense since an 80 GB HDD isn't much more expensive than a 40 GB.
Might even be cheaper because of the higher demands for that size in laptops.

Greed, but unless thy remove something else from the hardware, they'd probably be better of jut lowering the price of the 80 GB to 399. That way they'd be able to focus on producing just one SKU.

Sounds like BS to me because that's what the prediction of a Microsoft executive was like when he was interviewed recently (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=27100). I definitely believe the $500 80 GB standalone SKU as well as the Spiderman 3 bundle, but that's something anyone can guess just by paying attention at the evolution of the bundles and the price cuts. However, according to the prediction of the MS executive, it wouldn't have any backwards compatibility or extras like WiFi and flash card readers. What is more interesting is that he made up the argument that if Sony didn't do this, "they'd basically be dead for this generation". Just like the "first one to reach 10 million wins" BS argument. They'd just want to keep having a reason to deter producers and consumers from putting their money on PS3 based on price alone. Why would a Microsoft executive discuss a PS3 price cut so openly in the first place anyway? You gotta wonder why.

I'm not sure 40 GB HDDs are still in production, or whether Sony managed to buy tons of "obsolete" 40 GB HDDs for a very low price for this purpose, so who knows.
The bottom line is that I don't think it's true, but if it is they're going to have a major surprise for the holiday season that might sell a lot of systems.

Ah, buying the remaining stock is something I haven't thought of.

Kaz said no more multiple SKU's. Please, stop the rumors. What ever happened to, "I don't believe it until Sony says it"? Well, Sony did say it and they said no.

This remaining stock must have been HUGE. We are talking about 3 or even 5 milion HDDs... NOBODY has that much lying around anymore. Not Samsung or anyone else.
This 40GB HDD stuff is idiotic. First, like Viper said, Kaz has said, they don't want multiple SKUs, which only makes sense (from a marketing standpoint).
The difference in price between an 40 and 80 gig HDD in wholesale is likely to be less than 5€ or somesuch. Since Sony does not add shitty 80€ cases around those HDDs, so they cannot make money on HDDs at all (so upgrading the HDD will be no monetairy gain for them).
I think, the 20GB was stomped, because it didn't have WiFi and the Cardreaders. Since Sony also markets the PS3 as a media center solution, dropping these features was futile. They just had to make the price lower at any price on launch. Adding such an SKU again just doesn't make sense, since the delta in production price is sooo low, that the consumers price delta is not big enough to differentiate the two (and it adds cost in assembly, shipping, packaging... ... ...)
