Only 1 is out so far. Game is awesome though if you can get past some of the annoyances like the lock on system. For the most part though the game is excellent. If you like Shenmue you would probably like Yakuza.

Well I got one, so it did. It's English too so yeah, it definitely got a release outside Japan.
It's also an awesome game.
I don't know where the second is though?
As far as i understand it this game is a million seller in Japan but the first one sold badly everywhere else dissuading them from releasing the sequel on PS2 anywhere outside of Japan. I could be wrong they could be doing localization as we speak but the second has been out for quite a while and the first one was localised with a stellar voice acting cast very quickly.

Sony fanboys have a reason to rejoice today as the console war rages on: Yakuza: Kenzan! is coming and you'll only be able to play it on the PlayStation 3.
Details announced in the latest issue of Famitsu say the adventure game will take place in 1605 Japan -- the Edo period -- and players will lead the charge as Japan's most famous swordsman and the author of the Book of Five Rings Musashi Miyamoto. Bringing down the bad guys will mean implementing four fighting styles -- weaponless, one sword, two sword, and broadsword -- and a number of special moves.
So far, Japan is the only country getting the title. Look for it in early 2008.

Yakuza 3 Detailed (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/820/820445p1.html)
The most "pre" prequel ever is coming to the PS3.
by Anoop Gantayat
September 17, 2007 - If you'd told us that Sega would be continuing its Yakuza series with a third game on the PlayStation 3, we wouldn't have been too surprised. While the game was a big flop internationally, in Japan, the first two have combined for over a million sales on the PS2.
Now if you'd told us that the third game would actually be a prequel set 400 years in the past, we'd have looked around for a giant cone (or bench, or car) with which to smash you over the head (in case you haven't played Yakuza before, and few of you did, this is a typical scene in the game's battle system).
Officially titled Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan! in Japan, this PlayStation 3 adventure takes Sega's adult-oriented franchise back to 1605. Gone are the neon signs of Tokyo and Osaka, now replaced by the neon signs of an Edo Period Kyoto.
The game begins in the enclosed town of Gion, where girls use their bodies for money, and men use their money to buy dreams (that description is translated directly from a Famitsu article on the game... please don't write). Unlike the first two games, which were set in fictional towns designed to look like real places, Gion is a real historical part of Kyoto that was known for its geisha girls.
The story begins when main character Kazumanosuke Kiryu, a bodyguard who will take on any job if the price is right, is approached by a young girl named Haruka. She asks Kiryu to kill Musashi Miyamoto. Musashi Miyamoto is actually Kiryu's past self, and the name he goes by when outside of Gion. This, incidentally, is the same historical Musashi Miyamoto who's regarded as one of the finest swordsmen.
If you're familiar with the Yakuza series, you'll recognize the Kiryu and Haruka names. The two characters may share the same name as the hero and heroine of the first two titles, and they may even share the same basic model design, but they seem to have no actual relation. Presumably, these are the names we'll see in future Yakuza titles as well.
As we've come to expect from the series, Sega has hooked up some serious talent to do the voices for Yakuza 3. The voices for Haruki and Kiryu haven't been revealed, but here's a sampling of the talent for a few of the other characters.
Kojiro Sasaki (voiced by Shouta Matsuda)
Nagayoshi Marume (Naoto Takenaka)
Itou, the bodyguard (Susumu Terajima)
The mysterious monk (Hiroki Matsukata)
Seijyurou Yoshioka (Masaya Kato)
Toji Gion (Takeshi Tsukamoto)
In Japan, these are some of the biggest personalities in television and movies. They'll be put to use this time for more than just their voices, as Sega is using face scan technology to make their in-game counterparts share some visual similarities.
Outside of an adult-oriented storyline, Yakuza 3 appears to bring back much of what made the original two games so special. In addition to exploring a living town, now with more detail than ever thanks to the update in hardware, you'll get to make use of an updated combat system. You can now select between four fighting styles: fists (the standard style from past titles), single blade, dual blade and broad sword. "Heat Action" special moves return, complete with dramatic camera angels.
One of the coolest parts of the first Yakuza games was how your character grew as you progressed through the game. Previously, you learned new fighting moves by consulting with a master. That remains in Yakuza 3, but now you can also learn moves just by witnessing key events. Kiryu will even learn special attacks by watching animals move -- for instance, a dog leaping up to fetch a bone.
Mini games and side quests also have their expected place in Yakuza 3. The game will feature over 100 sub quests, some possibly featuring historical figures. Mini games include shogi, dice and archery -- things you might expect from the Edo Period. Hostess clubs are back, giving you a chance to woo the ladies, although these scenes now take place in a seedy tatami room rather than a seedy bar.
Sega's NE Soft R&D Creative Officer Toshihiro Nagoshi, head producer of the Yakuza series, pointed out to Famitsu in a recent interview that the game doesn't have "3" in the title. That doesn't mean it's an offshoot. In fact, he says the game is being made to surpass Yakuza 2 in all areas, and that we'll slowly learn of the great scale as new information is unveiled.
The information should be forthcoming for this one. Although just announced, Yakuza 3 is already set for Japanese release this Spring, and will have a prominent presence in Sega's booth at the Tokyo Game Show.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Blazes To PS3
It's not about Yakuzas anymore!
By Yoshi Sato, 09/17/2007
Sega has announced it will release Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan for the PlayStation3. This is the third game in the series (the first of which was released in the US under the title Yakuza) which takes place in Kyoto in the year 1605.
Producer Toshihiro Nagoshi comments, "We've thought about not using the Ryu title in the third game, but I really wanted to use Kiryuu Kazuma as the main character. After several discussion, we figured it didn't matter if he existed in the past or in the future. We wanted to show the potential that Kiryuu Kazuma has. So when we placed him in the Edo era, this turned out to fit in quite well."
The main character in the game is Kiryuu Kazumanosuke, who runs a small shop serving as a yojimbo (bodyguard) and debt collector in the town of Gion. But in actuality, he is the infamous samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi, who went into hiding after the Battle of Sekigahara living under a different name. The story begins when a little girl named Haruka asks Kiryuu to find and kill Miyamoto Musashi in order to avenge her parents' death.
The producer talks about Musashi, "Setting the game during the Edo era was definitely interesting, but we wanted something more. We had this idea of bring in a famous character during that era, and this is where Miyamoto Mushashi came in. There are many stories written about him, but we also wanted to do our fictional take on the legendary swordsman, fitting him with our character Kiryuu. So in the game, you have Kiryuu, leading a more relaxed life aiming wondrously, and we already know that Musashi is one of the greatest samurai warriors. You will see a stark contrast between the two and I think this will help players understand the story better."
The environment shows the colorful town of Gion in Kyoto. Since Kiryuu only serves as a yojimbo, he is not allowed to pull out his katana here. Once he steps out of the front gate, bigger places (and bigger fights) await players in key locales such as the Shimizu Temple and Nijo Castle. The camera can be moved around this time so players will have a higher degree of freedom.
Like the previous series, there are several shops and eatery but now all in traditional Japanese settings. New moves can be acquired by receiving training from other characters as usual, but now special events at certain locations will also grant Kiryuu a new set of moves. For example, watching a dog catch a bone in midair will suddenly give Kiryuu a hint for his new move. This new event is called Ware, Tenkei Wo Etari (Japanese for "I have found a revelation.") where he starts performing calligraphy on a scroll and acquire a new move.
Battles now puts weapons as a stronger focus. While you can still fight with your bare fists, you will also have the opportunity to choose from single-wielding katana, double-wielding katana and other weapons such as large swords, iron clubs and Shichishitou ("seven-pronged sword"). Heat Mode is also back in the game, so expect to see lots of crazy katana action.
Nagoshi concludes by saying, "As always, we have put great importance in the game's fun factor and mature theme in the story. The concept of the previous 2 games was 'Life is about not running away'. In this game, it is about taking the path one believes in and to carry the burden that was set upon by destiny. We hope that players will feel something through the character's lives and story-telling."
Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan is slated for a spring 2008 release in Japan.

Yakuza 3 happens to involve the very same character in a different setting planned by Sega gurus of Yakuzu1, bringing in Kiryu Kazama(of Yakuza1 fame) and placing him in the character of Miyamoto Mushashi, the famous Japanese swordsman. Sega bringing together three different worlds together as in Shenmue level world detail and Yakuza like punk-ass fighting plus a Legendary warrior's tale. My my ....

Rumors have surfaced regarding Sega's upcoming PS3 exclusive title, Yakuza 3. The game, whose prior two incarnations dealt with more modern-style gangster brawls, takes you back to the time when swords and skill were pretty accurate measures of your ability to earn respect. We'd love to know how it plays and that's where the rumor kicks in -- Sega may be releasing a demo on the Japanese PlayStation Store sometime this month. Sega hasn't said anything officially, but according to some random source over at Gamefront, it's coming. We'll find out, we guess.

I started playing the first game again the other day, but I can't get any further than the 3rd chapter. I get to the part where "escape from the funeral!" appears on the screen, and then it freezes. Tried it with my friend's copy, same problem. Me am sad :(

Yakuza 3 scores high in Famitsu Weekly.
Critical reception to SEGA’s forthcoming PlayStation 3 prequel, Yakuza: Kenzan! (Otherwise known as Yakuza 3) has got off to an impressive start in its native Japan, where the game has received a score of 37/40 from Famitsu Weekly.
For the uninformed, the publication awards games a score of 1-10 based on four different reviewers, with Yakuza 3 managing a highly impressive 10,9,9,9.
Yakuza 3 is a PS3-exclusive and third iteration in the critically acclaimed adventure series from Sega, and takes the form of a prequel set in the year 1605, based on the developers own hopes of rekindling the samurai spirit of Japanese history.
A western release has yet to be announced.
