The engine used as the base technology for Oblivion, Civilization IV and other games is now heading to the Nintendo Wii.
It’ll be the first time that Emergent’s Gamebryo engine will be moving beyond the more powerful PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, as Emergent joins Nintendo’s Third Party Tools Program.
A heavily modified version of the Gamebryo engine is used for Bethesda Softworks’ Oblivion as well as the upcoming Fallout 3.
Emergent CEO Geoffrey Selzer said in a statement that the Gamebryo could help developers who were “caught off guard” with the Wii’s success quickly jump on the Nintendo development bandwagon.
Gamebryo is also being used by EA Mythic for the upcoming MMO Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. More than 200 games use the engine, according to Emergent.
“We are delighted to announce the Wii port of our Gamebryo engine. With the success of Nintendo’s Wii console catching much of the industry off guard and offering fresh interactive features, developers need new tools to be able to develop for multiple platforms that offer vastly different capabilities and require different programming techniques,” said Geoffrey Selzer, CEO of Emergent.

Could this mean multiplatform PS3/X360 game could now be developed for Wii as well? Even if they still can't, it's a big boon for Wii since Gamebryo is a very popular engine in PC development and will give lots of new Wii developers a familiar toolset to dish out some great content with.
This also means a modified version of UE3 should be possible on Wii.
