View Full Version : How to: Trouble shoot

I use Ubuntu...which is very nice btw...
But sometimes my system freezes up on me, naturally just like any other OS or whatever.
However, sometimes I have to restart multiple time for the system to kind of get back "on track" so to speak.
My test is as soon as I boot up, I right click and try to change my desktop background. I set it up so the Ubuntu noise happens whenever I use that function, if no sounds comes up, I know I have to restart again...
So I'm told that Linuz can be debunked, altered, tweaked and all sorts of stuff.
So basically, how do I identify this little bug?
How do I fix it?
Is it a hardware issue or software?

Just for future reference, the best thing about Linux is its modularity. When you have a problem in Windows that requires a restart, in Linux, you can just restart the offending program/service/part of the whole running system.
In my use of Ubuntu and Kubuntu, I've noticed there are just alot of little quirks. I don't know why or how they're there. I am assuming the problem is that if you don't get sound that first time, then you know sound won't be working unless you restart?

It's like a freeze that takes a while to let up...
Sometimes I leave my PC on for weeks/months and it's fine, then sometimes I gotta reboot multiple times to get the freeze off...

ok, we'll try:
get your system in a state where it does not want to work properly (when no apps will work), fire up one app that doesn't work and go to a terminal and type:
top
then press ctrl+c
post what top reports.
Then repeat this again after launching more then one application.

Dammit!!! I can't get anything to work in the freeze

I'm looking at the terminal now with the freeze...I had to put a terminal Icon on my desktop to get it to respond when the freeze is on...
However, It seems i can't take a picture of the terminal....I'll copy as much as I can...
Also, I just keep my comp on in the freeze mode to see where we can go with this...Here's what I got so far...
Dammit Can't copy and paste!!!

You cannot restart only the graphical window system in Windows, portions of the Windows kernel, etc is what I meant. Even KDE and Gnome are mostly modular, so portions of them can be stopped and restarted.

I guess you can't stop services in Windows, right?
Right, but you can't stop your window manager and any processes related, you can't shut down certain processes that have a dependency on others. You can't shut down some without your system restarting, you can't determine whether the issue is a GUI specific bug etc.
Your gonna hate me omni, i can't draw much on that, looks normal.
Do you have compiz/beryl on when this instability occurs?
just to be sure, type:
metacity --replace &
and just see if that does anything. Beryl can cause some strange issues. For example, for me when i run compiz-fusion SOME of amarok's visualizations, my init CPU utilization goes up to ~68% from almost nothing, for no reason at all.

LOL, ok, just one thing, the resource was unavailable due to the fact you didn't run sudo apt-get update before sudo apt-get install, or of course the server could have been down.

Cool, do you know why I'm getting this error message? Do I have to do a restart first?

With a quick glance, I'd say your compiz settings are screwy. Not sure how you would clear 'em all out, though.

i don't know, but i agree with khaos. i would recommend removing anything and everything to do with compiz and beryl and follow the guide on the ubuntu forums to figure out how to get compiz-fusion going.
sudo apt-get --purge remove beryl* compiz*
the * are wildcard characters which can be used to select multiple apps to remove, for example "beryl*" will remove beryl and any other packages with "beryl" in the name, and any number of letters after (eg: beryl-core)
