A screen shot from the latest Home beta shows a Divx logo in the background.
If this turns out to be the case than Sony have done another GREAT move which will help to reel in many more people from the internet sharing community.

I for one have always wanted a PS3 not just for the games but its media capabilities so i will be over the moon if this comes true. I have a huge archive of divx/xvid documentaries & sitcoms recorded from TV that are just waiting to be streamed.

Archy you of should of posted it here,

since we already have a new home beta topic, no need for two of them

I saw that thread but read it as not being a generic discussion thread for HOME but one discussing "Home public beta to be invite only" news.

I felt that the unconfirmed Divx support news was very important & should not be lost inside another topic that had a thread heading indicating different.

What's more interesting is that there's more to DivX and PS3 than some of you think...

Interesting, I know that F5 is very into DivX and uses a DivX tool-set for their games but this seem to be genuine video to be played in Home (I hope).

VG, that is a Factor 5 developed Divx for consoles that's been used on all systems since the GC/Xbox.

What's so exciting about this DivX?

Why the fuss?
I am into video and crap and never resorted to using DivX?

I'm not a DivX user either, but I know too many people who have hardons every time they talk about it, so PS3 getting DivX support could be quite a huge thing.

No needd to re-encode ones collection of ripped movies?

To be honest I'd much rather prefer if SCE opened up the PS3 for all video codec makers so people can watch Vob, DivX, RMVB, OGM, Ogg, MP4, google video and so on straight from the net in their browser.

Ah, okay, thanks man. No wonder I don't use it.
Seems like the format of some illegal trading ;)

Not to rain on the parade but what if that is just a background video in the presentation made with divx codec being played on loop or something?

It does look more like a watermark than an icon, doesn't it?

Yup, that's why. Afaik, divx logo pops up at the beginning of divx encoded vids for the first few seconds or something. And exactly there, at the bottom right corner.

Yes, if you use the trial version, it shows the logo for a few seconds.

This reminds me of the Sony/Apple rumours where a Sony employee had used a trial version of an Apple-developed flash program to create the intro to the PS3 website, which resulted in a watermark of the apple icon being shown during the flash, and made people believe that there was something going on.

Probably nothing.

Damn, Sony. Pay the fee and stop using trial software, lol.

The logo can be disabled easily and freely, and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with trial software when playing rather than encoding (it's not an encoded watermark within the file, but just a software logo). Still, I wonder why it's there. I think that's just streaming from a reencoded source (lower quality to send the video stream over the Internet to Home). Whatever server was playing that didn't disable the logo.

Yes could just be a plain blunder by Sony.

Also I have recently noticed more internet sites offering Divx streaming videos (via Divx web player) as opposed to using flash player. Could be that Sony acknowledges this & decided to support Divx so that PS3 owners web browsing experience is not limited.

I hope so. Then I'll finally be able to use tv-links.co.uk on my PS3.
