Video game Halo 3 earned more than £84m ($170m) in sales in its first 24 hours on release, according to Microsoft.

The game sets the record for the most money earned in a day by an entertainment product, topping figures set by film Spiderman 3. glad the gaming industry is starting to show fight

Thousands of shops opened at midnight on Monday in the United States as gamers queued for the Xbox 360 title.

But reports of scratched discs have marred the launch, with Microsoft offering to replace them for free.

Sales figures from European launches have yet to be added into the total. lol, holy crap

More than 1.4 million people have gone online to play the title since its launch and more than four million online games of Halo 3 were logged in the last 24 hours.

"Halo 3 has become a pop-culture phenomenon," said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, in a statement.

Microsoft needs Halo 3 to boost sales of the Xbox 360; despite investing billions of dollars into the Xbox project it has yet to see any meaningful profitable return. they mean no profit yet (its the BBC, give them some room for mistakes when it comes to videogames)

"It's far too early to say what the financial return will be for our investment," Mr Kim told the BBC News website last month.

Microsoft hopes to make a profit on its Xbox in this financial year.

"If we can't make a profit in the year Halo 3 comes out, then when will we?" said Mr Kim. *shrugs* dunno, it's your division

Microsoft has started a disc replacement service for gamers complaining of scratched copies of a limited edition version of the game.

But gamers have complained it will take two weeks for replacement copies to arrive. our beloved IEFP being one them

Just played some Halo 3 today. 2 player multiplayer, this guy beat me every time in Slayer. Lost an average like 25-15 each time. Pretty good for my first time :)

I absolutely despise that you can't configure the controls, totally pissing me off.... I'm so used to my PS2 controller configuration that I kept fumbling with buttons... :(

Why is reload R1 for the love of god! I need my R1 shoot, my R2 change guns, my L1 grenades, my L1 change grenades, triangle jump, square reload, circle melee and X action button!

A bit unrelated but okay. :p

I too am a bit of a PS controller whore but I'm not one of those annoying people who cry every time they have to play with another controller.

Like my brother going "ah man, this PS controller is so hard to control compared to X360".
He says this before EVERY gaming session lol

More on topic:
Does this give them a profit do you guys think?
How is Europe going to do?

^ We all know a lot of Halo units will be moved, but I'm still not sure if Halo will result in more 360 purchases... Considering Halo is a hardcore FPS geared toward multiplayer not sure if this game will bring casual gamers to the party...
I think Microsoft is doing a great job creating hype and making the game seem larger than life. It's even worked on me, because I have spent more time playing Halo 3 multiplayer than I did with Halo 2.

It will be interesting to see how things play out this holiday season.

Microsoft has been talking since the beginning of this year that they would have profit from this; and I have talked to people in Microsoft before that aren't as high up that are convinced that MS plans stuff out (even bad stuff like the RRoD replacement systems) months sometimes years in advance. I don't see why they wouldn't make profit.

(you can switch the controls up so that different buttons do different things. They are pre-configured, but still give you different options. Try them out)

Halo 3 (http://mivadika.com/forum/video-games/1693-halo-3-records-more-than-300-million-first-week-sales-worldwide.html) just broke $300 million in sales in only a few days.

Very impressive!

How the hell did you just realized that.

And this is not MS making a profit is it?
We/ I don't want to encourage them to stay in the market ¬_¬

Halo 3 is still beating ass. In the week ending with October 9th, it beat out many debuted games such as all the basketball titles, and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Halo 3 is also one week from surpassing Gears of War as the best selling game on the system (Gears of War is at 4.8 mil). At the rate it is going, it will outsell Halo by the end of December, Halo is at 6.43million sold, this would also make Halo 3 the best selling next-generation game worldwide, with Wii Play in second, and Gears of War in third.

Take into consideration, that Halo 1 sales that are counted are the sales of the game with the Halo edition Xbox console, and that I am not counting Wii Sports, because in most cases Wii Sports is a packed in game, so you really have no choice to have that game or not.

I mean Christ..it's insane. Halo 3, 3 years from now could potentially be a 10 million seller.

I'm not saying it didn't but where do you get your numbers for October 9th already?
